Volunteering Opportunities exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974The British Red Cross is committed to fair and inclusive volunteer recruitment, welcoming applications from all individuals, including those with criminal convictions.  In line with our Recruitment of Ex-Offenders Policy, a copy of which is available upon request, any convictions are considered only when relevant to the volunteering opportunity.
Certain opportunities within the organisation will be exempt from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.
These are opportunities that require the individual to work within regulated activities with children and/or adults at risk, and therefore the organisation is required to a carry out a criminal record check prior to the applicant commencing with the organisation. This will be reflected in the role profile.
Where an opportunity is not exempt under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, applicants are not required to disclose convictions that are ‘spent’ under the Act, however applicants are required to declare any unspent convictions at the application stage.
Having an ‘unspent’ conviction will not necessarily bar the applicant from volunteering with the British Red Cross. This will depend on the circumstances, background to the offence(s) and the nature of any unspent convictions.
The organisation will take every possible step to ensure that each individual is treated equally and fairly, with conversations taking place during the volunteering application process.

You can still hire one of our wheelchairs, you just have to pay the £22 per week fee.

Why do we charge for our service?The Mobility Aids service is a social enterprise side of the British Red Cross. This means any money we get goes directly towards supporting our vital work. Our aim is to keep the service affordable while still contributing to those important causes. How do I extend my hire?To extend your wheelchair hire, please call 0300 456 1914. Payment will be taken when you extend your hire because we don’t store card details.How can I donate to the Mobility Aids Service?You can donate to the British Red Cross online. If you would like your donation to directly support the Mobility Aids Service, please call 0300 456 1914.Do you accept donations of mobility items?Unfortunately, we cannot accept donations of mobility items in most of the UK. However, if you are in Hampshire, Norfolk and Waveney, or Northern Ireland, mobility aid donations may be accepted. Please visit our local wheelchair service page to find a local number and enquire.Are the wheelchairs lightweight?No, all wheelchairs are a standard weight for your comfort and safety. Lightweight models are not available.Do you accept payment via bank transfer? Can I pay by direct debit?We do not accept bank transfers or direct debit. All payments must be made by card, either over the phone or at the time of booking online. If you are collecting equipment in person, cash payment may be available in certain locations.Can I pay the hire charges weekly?You can choose how often you pay for your hire. Some people prefer to pay the full amount upfront, while others pay weekly to spread the cost. Please note that extensions can only be arranged over the phone, and we require card payment as we do not store card details.Do the hire charges change the longer I hire the wheelchair?No, our hire charges remain the same throughout the rental period at a flat rate of £22 per week. We don’t automatically collect equipment at the end of the hire, so it’s important to contact us ahead of your agreed return date to schedule your collection.
