[H2] Concrete Assessment Surveys Contact an expertThe suitability of reinforced concrete for construction or other purposes depends upon a combination of factors including – but not limited to – the quality of the mix, chloride ion content, cover depth and more.Over and above the tests discussed above, therefore, our specialists can carry out a wide selection of in-situ testing on concrete structures. Vital for accurately assessing both the durability and condition of structural concrete, these tests can be the difference between a project being viable and not.Carbonation testingCement content testingChloride testingAlkali-silica reaction testing (ASR)Sulphate testingTesting for the presence of HACConcrete resistivity testing [H2] Pendulum Slip Resistance Testing Contact an expertOften overlooked by developers and property owners alike, the friction of your floor (or how slippery it is) is absolutely critical, especially when it comes to public or commercial buildings. In the words of the Health and Safety Executive, “there is a level of friction below which people tend to slip over”. Fall below this level and you could be inadvertently encouraging people to fall, potentially leading to injuries, financial/insurance claims and even investigation by the relevant authorities. The Pendulum Slip Resistance Test is the HSE’s preferred method of assessing the slip resistance of flooring. This is thanks to its portability and thus its ability to be used in the exact conditions that could result in slip accidents. It measures the dynamic coefficient of friction (CoF) and, in simple terms, simulates the effect of a member of the public placing their heel on the ground whilst walking. [H2] Screed Soundness Testing Contact an expertFirst developed by the British Research Establishment – or BRE – in the 1970s, the BRE Screed Test is now widely accepted as being the default, ‘go to’ test for measuring the soundness of a sand and cement floor screed. To put things simply, however, it’s designed to calculate whether a screed is capable of taking the loads and level of traffic for which it was intended.Able to be used just 14 days after the screed has been laid, this test can help advise as to whether any remedial measures may be required due to issues with the mix or compaction etc.The BRE screed testing offered by Perry Testing is carried out in accordance with British Standard BS8204 with the BRE screed test itself now forming part of the BS Code of Practices for the measurement of screed soundness. In terms of methodology, either a 2Kg or 4Kg weight (attached to a 1m long guide) is dropped four times onto the screed with the indentation made in the concrete then being measured. We can interpret the results, considering the class of screed, whilst highlighting any suspect areas. Any problematic areas found following the BRE screed test may either be remediated or prompt further testing to be carried out. [H2] Pile Integrity Testing Contact an expertDiscover the benefits of pile integrity testing for assessing the condition of piles: a cost-effective and extremely efficient method that eliminates the need for expensive excavations, physical exposure or ground disturbance. [H2] Relative Humidity Testing Contact an expertWhilst your concrete slab may appear completely dry, that may not always be the case with significant amounts of water potentially still being present within the concrete (relative humidity). There are a variety of factors the can affect the level of relative humidity within concrete with RH sometimes remaining an issue for many months after pouring. What’s more, recently laid concrete slabs typically contain higher levels of relative humidity the further down you go. It’s essential, therefore, that testing is carried out throughout the slab, not merely towards the surface.Lay flooring on top of the slab before it’s had chance to properly dry out, however, and that water will try to escape, having potentially disastrous effects upon your chosen flooring. Our team of concrete specialists will assess your slab, measuring the level of relative humidity within and determining whether it has reached a safe and acceptable level. In doing so, we can save you significant amounts of both time and money that may otherwise have been spent on the installation of a damp proof membrane. [H2] Load Testing Contact an expertWith over 20 years’ experience, our team of structural investigation engineers are ideally placed to carry out in-depth load testing on a variety of structural elements.Structural load testing could be required for a number of reasons. A change of use could be proposed for the building, requiring the addition of supplementary floor or perhaps heavy plant. Alternatively, there could be a need to prove performance for verification reasons or even strength following a fire.Such testing is a widely accepted method of proving a building’s (or an individual component’s) ability to take a specific load. Such components could include…SlabsBalconiesBalustradesLiftsLifting beams and more.Perry Testing will apply the test load your projects demand using hydraulic rams or test weights, continuously monitoring deflection over a specified time period before issuing a report containing our findings. [H2] Pull Out and Pull Off Testing Contact an expertBacked up by more than two decades of experience, our specialist engineers carry out tensile and sheer tests – or pull out and pull off testing – on a range of structural fixings connected to or embedded within beams, walls and so on. Carried out in accordance with BS 8539, these tests can provide the information needed to identify potentially dangerous and expensive issues within fixings or structures. [H2] Schmidt Hammer Surveys Contact an expertThe Schmidt hammer – or rebound hammer – is a mechanical, spring-loaded tool that, when used on concrete, provides a value that can be compared against a table, this value corresponding to a known compressive strength figure.Widely believed to be one of the best methods of accurately assessing the compressive strength of concrete, a Schmidt hammer survey helps us identify known areas of high quality concrete. Comparing other areas against these, we can then pinpoint potentially problematic areas of concrete.By using a Schmidt hammer, our expert team can quickly and accurately identify areas of poor quality concrete, giving you the information you need to make a properly informed decision. [H2] Diamond Drilling and Dust Sampling Contact an expertDiamond drilling or coring is ideal for creating super clean, precision holes in concrete in order to extract cores for testing at one of our UKAS accredited laboratories. Not only is the structural integrity of the material preserved throughout due to its non-percussive nature, thanks to the water used during coring, the entire process is dust-free.Being quiet, light and easily transportable, the diamond drilling of concrete and other materials can take place almost anywhere, even in particularly tight spaces or those still occupied by the public. [H2] RAAC Concrete Surveys Contact an expertA light weight, aerated type of concrete that was used extensively in the second part of the 20th century, RAAC concrete is regularly present within public buildings and beyond, and in roofs and walls in particular.Over recent years, however, a number of structural failures have led to significant concerns arising over a tendency for cracking, rebar corrosion, and even collapse.Perry Testing provides an in-depth RAAC concrete surveys in line with both Government guidance and BRE IP 7/02. "Perry Testing are more than just another surveying company, they provide modern solutions to real problems. Always a pleasure to work with them." — Ben Joshua, Senior Engineer, Keltbray "We have engaged Perry Testing on a range and number of projects to provide scanning, sampling, and testing and always found them responsive and their reports to be high quality and informative. I would highly recommend them." — Malcolm Brady, Director, MBP "I have worked with Perry Testing Limited on several projects over the past 3 or 4 years, and they have always responded to our requests at very short notice, providing a professional, expert service every time." — Ben White, Managing Quantity Surveyor, United Living [H3] Looking for advice on structural investigation? Whilst this can vary due to nature of each individual project, we typically aim to deliver our reports within 10 working days of the site work having been completed. Can a Ferroscan only detect metallic objects? Yes, however, we can also use specialist GPR (ground penetrating radar) equipment that can also pick up all manner of materials and voids. How deep can a Ferroscan detect reinforcement? The Hilti Ferroscan PS300 can detect reinforcement up to 150mm below the surface. We can also use GPR (ground penetrating radar) equipment to detect reinforcement up to a depth of 600mm. How much can you scan in one day using Ferroscan equipment? It depends on the site conditions but, on the whole, we can usually scan approximately 20² metres per day. Please give us a call to discuss your requirements in more detail. Can the Ferroscan determine bar (rebar) diameters? The Hilti PS300 is accurate to +/- 1 standard bar size. That said, we would recommend confirming this by performing a small, localised breakout. How deep can GPR - or ground penetrating radar - penetrate? Our standard, high-frequency GPR antennas can detect reinforcement up to a depth of 600mm. We also have lower frequency antennas that can penetrate up to 3m, dependent on ground conditions. Can GPR equipment determine the diameter of reinforcing bar (or rebar)? No, GPR is unable to determine bar diameter. However, we can use the Hilti Ferroscan and localised breakouts (where required) to capture these dimensions. Why choose Perry Testing? Reduced risk and costsUsing the very latest technology and techniques, we help reduce unexpected costs, keeping your team, project and organisation safe in the process. [H2] Hilti Ferroscan Surveys Contact an expertBy far the most popular form of concrete scanning, as the name would suggest, a ferroscan survey is used to detect and position rebar within reinforced concrete in much the same way as a covermeter survey. Unlike that more basic approach, however, the ferroscan can also determine both bar diameter and spacing, letting an experienced user build up a far more detailed picture of sub-surface conditions.Determined to stay at the forefront of concrete scanning technology, all of our teams use the very latest ferroscan instruments, the all-new Hilti Ferroscan PS300. Site conditions allowing, this revolutionary new instrument is able to provide the following details down to approximately 200mm below the surface…Cover depthBar diameterBar spacingMesh layoutThat’s up to 100mm deeper than its predecessor, the otherwise Hilti Ferroscan PS250. A ferroscan survey can also detect other metallic objects (e.g. steel cables) but, as the name would suggest, is unable to detect non-metallic items. Two types of survey can be carried out using the Hilti Ferroscan…Quick Scans – The lateral position of any rebar can be marked directly onto the slab, column or beam itself using chalk, paint stick or similar. This seemingly rudimentary approach is perfect for those intending to drill or core through concrete. Not only is it quick, providing instant results, it also lets the client drill cleanly, missing any reinforcement on the way through.Image Scans – For those requiring more in-depth information, image scans are the preferred route. Granted, this type of ferroscan survey takes longer to perform and the results cannot be analysed in situ. That said, once the surveyor has returned to base, the data can be downloaded to their computer for analysis within Hilti’s Profis software. At this point, cover depth, bar diameter and bar spacing measurements can be extracted. ‘Slices’ through scans as well as the overall mesh layout can also be output. These images can be added to reports or CAD drawings according to your specifications. [H2] GPR Concrete Scanning Contact an expertA somewhat different approach to the more traditional ferroscan, our Hilti PS1000 and Proceq GPR Live ground penetrating radar systems are developed specifically for the interrogation of structures. With a substantially greater operating depth, these tools are able to provide an incredibly detailed picture of sub-surface conditions.By no means an exhaustive list, GPR concrete scanning can help identify the following…VoidsCracksReinforcing bars (position, spacing and layout across one or a number of layers)Non-ferrous services (pipes, conduits, ductwork etc.)Changes in surfaceWhilst it does have its limitations, concrete specific ground penetrating radar has helped revolutionise the field of concrete scanning, having a number of advantages over more traditional types of surveying.GPR concrete surveys provideThe ability to calculate the thickness of a slabThe ability to view two layers of reinforcement without the need to access both sides of the slabSignificantly improved operating depthThe identification of voids, buried services and other buried elements, including non-metallicThe ability to mark out reinforcement without the need to first remove any levelling compounds or screedsThe ability to produce three dimensional and cross-sectional images of conditions inside the slab [H2] Ultrasonic Testing of Concrete Contact an expertA real step forward in the field of concrete scanning, ultrasonic testing has changed the way both we and the wider industry attempt to locate defects within concrete structures. At Perry Testing, we’ve embraced the very latest in ultrasonic testing technology – the Proceq Pundit PE200 – in order to identify a whole range of structural defects in concrete. These include, but are not limited to…Cracks (including crack depth)VoidsPipesHoneycombingQuite commonly, the ultrasonic testing of concrete may only be required from one side of the object, making access issues a thing of the past. What’s more, thanks to the nature of the device, we’re often able to provide critical data there and then, reducing down time and maintaining productivity on site. Naturally, however, these insights can be followed up by detailed drawings and reports highlighting any areas of concern.Interestingly, the same technology can also be used to provide valuable information on the strength and uniformity of a whole variety of materials including…ConcreteWoodCeramicsRock and more. [H2] Concrete Covermeter Surveys Contact an expertA simple and cost-effective form of concrete scanning, a cover meter survey is intended to locate reinforcing bars (or ‘rebar’) within concrete as well as providing an accurate determination of cover depth – the distance from the surface of the slab to the top of the rebar.Designed for exactly this purpose, a cover meter is a handheld instrument that uses pulse-induction technology to induce electromagnetic pulses into a concrete slab. The closer a reinforcing bar is to the surface, the stronger the magnetic field it will generate, thus making it possible for a covermeter survey to determine cover depth.Until the advent of the Hilti Ferroscan, the cover meter was the only reliable method of determining cover depth. That said, if you don’t need to know bar diameter and spacing (features of the more advanced Ferroscan tool), a cover meter survey could still be the service your project requires. Indeed, lower equipment costs and reduced reporting time means that cover meter surveys can prove particularly cost effective. [H2] DCP Testing - Dynamic Cone Penetrometer Contact an expertAt Perry Testing, we use a Dynamic Core Penetrometer (or DCP) to obtain an indicative CBR value without the need for expensive downtime such as plant and operator costs.Generally applied to the ground via specially created trial pits or core holes, DCP testing is carried out by dropping a weight from a known distance onto the cone. The resultant movement measured can then be read directly from the instrument.DCP testing is typically used to measure road and pavement condition and stiffness. That said, we can also use the dynamic cone penetrometer to measure the strength of in-situ soils as well as to determine both the thickness and location of underlying soil layers. [H2] Hand Shear Vane Testing Contact an expertHand shear vane testing involves the application of an instrument in order to determine the undrained shear strength of cohesive soils. The result can be given in Kn/M² or it can be given as a vane shear strength using the calculation given in British Standard BS 1377. Either of these results can be provided instantly on site by our knowledgeable engineers. [H2] Incremental Plate Load Testing Contact an expertCarried out in accordance with British Standard BS 1377, incremental plate load testing is an extremely popular method of…Proving pile matsProving crane mats prior to the arrival of plant on siteProving concrete slabs prior to the arrival or design of heavy plantOur specialist engineers will apply a counterweight (known as ‘kentledge’) to the surface with the weight being applied varying according to the loads that need to be simulated. The appropriate load will then be applied to the plate with any distortions being meticulously documented. [H2] CBR Testing - California Bearing Ratio Contact an expertCBR testing (or California Bearing Ratio testing) can be used to evaluate the load-bearing potential of roads, pavements, and driveways, amongst other surfaces. It can prove particularly useful during situations involving a potential change in the use of a surface, such as the need to accommodate higher traffic volumes or heavier loads, or when gauging the quantities of materials needed for prospective road construction projects. [H2] SRD Testing - Sand Replacement Density Contact an expertExperts in our field, Perry Testing offers a comprehensive sand replacement density testing service, designed to measure the in-situ density of natural soils or imported materials using sand pouring cylinders. The in-situ density is normally used for highway or pavement design purposes, providing designers and engineers with the relevant ‘degree of compaction’ (required for highway and site specifications). This allows our clients to be confident in the compaction of the material before proceeding with final layers.Sand replacement density testing is fully described in British Standard BS 1377: Soils for Civil Engineering Purposes: Part 9 and is both an efficient and accurate way of accessing the density of most materials. It is worth noting that, unlike other methods, with SRD testing there is no need for time consuming and expensive calibration of equipment for every site and material type. [H2] Core Cutter Density Testing Contact an expertCore cutter density testing is used for almost the same purpose as SRD testing (covered above). This time, however, it is used solely for cohesive materials (e.g. clay). As with the former method, this is an extremely effective way of both quickly and accurately checking compaction on site.Once collected, the samples can then be used for further tests such as triaxial or permeability assessments. [H2] Laboratory Based Construction Materials Testing Contact an expertNot all testing is carried out there and then on site. Many of the tests we most commonly carry out involve a physical sample being taken on site, with that sample then being transported to one of our UKAS-accredited partner laboratories for in-depth analysis. For more information on these services, visit our laboratory testing services page. No problem, please contact us and we will be happy to assist. Contact an expert How long does a concrete core need to be? Concrete core samples need to have a 1:1 diameter to length ratio. How long does it take to get results for compressive strength of core tests? We aim to provide these results within 5 working days. What diameter does a concrete core need to be? The diameter of a concrete core needs to be at least 1.5 times the nominal aggregate size. Will you reinstate the core holes after coring has been completed? Yes, we can perform a a structural repair where the core was extracted. Is concrete coring noisy? Yes, extracting a core sample will create noise. That said, we will always do our best to be flexible, avoiding certain times of day upon request. Alternatively, we can provide a quote for out of hours working where necessary. Which areas do you cover? We're based in Watford in Hertfordshire, not far from London, but we regularly travel throughout the UK including Bedfordshire, Middlesex, Buckinghamshire and Surrey to support our clients. How much do your services cost? Whilst every project is different, we charge based on a competitive day rate. Simply get in touch for a tailored quotation. How do I know which type (or types) of testing I need? Many of our clients are initially unsure as to exactly what type of testing is needed to capture the information their projects require. If that sounds like you, just get in touch and a member of our team will advise on the most appropriate and cost-effective approach to take. Do you offer an out-of-hours or weekend service? Absolutely. Whilst the majority of our works are carried out during normal working hours between Monday and Friday, we understand that this won't be possible for every client. That's why we offer an out of hours and weekend working service available upon request. What is your lead in time for attending site? On the whole, our lead time for site work is between 1-2 weeks from receipt of an instruction. That said, we completely understand that some projects require a more immediate response and will always do our best to accommodate urgent requests. Can you arrange access to areas at height? Yes. All of our engineers are trained to work at height with PASMA and IPAF certification. We can also bring any necessary access equipment with us - such as a tower or MEWP - as necessary. Can you carry out testing in confined spaces? Yes. We have a number of highly experienced engineers who have confined space training. What is your lead time for reports? Whilst this can vary due to nature of each individual project, we typically aim to deliver our reports within 10 working days of the site work having been completed. Why choose Perry Testing? Your Diagnosis
Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.
Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)
These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.
Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.
Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.
Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.
Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.
Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.
Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.
Based on 354 businesses audited.
Construction, Contractors & Building Services BS: Perry Testing Ltd (www.perry-ltd.com)
Perry Testing is a legitimate technical entity hiding behind a template-heavy, proof-deficient website. The technical specificity of their testing protocols is impressive, but the site’s reliance on ‘Trust Theatre’ and broken homepage counters creates an unnecessary credibility tax.
Immediate remediation of the Facts & Figures counter on the homepage is required to reflect actual project volumes instead of zeros. The claim of UKAS-accredited laboratory partnerships must be linked to external validation or named lab entities. A dedicated Projects or Gallery page featuring photos of site work and named project locations would eliminate the ‘Missing Element’ penalty. Finally, the redundant Why Choose Us blocks should be consolidated into a single About page to improve page-level substance ratios.
The content perfectly matches the Structural Investigation and Concrete Testing industry. The pages detail specific engineering protocols such as CBR testing, Hilti Ferroscan surveys, and Schmidt Hammer surveys, confirming high domain relevance.
“The score of 40 is driven by a critical failure in the Trust and Proof pillar and the technical credibility gap on the homepage. While the identity of the founder is well-documented in schema, the absence of verified reviews and project evidence prevents a 'Minimal BS' rating.”
