The story began in 1930’s Manhattan, when inventor and chemist, Dr. Peter Schlumbohm, set out to design a coffeemaker to brew the perfect cup of coffee.  In his workshop he discovered that the perfect cup comes from a combination of perfect extraction and perfect filtration. From this, the CHEMEX® was born.

The secret to perfect coffee... every time. The CHEMEX® coffeemaker was designed and then patented in 1941, by the eccentric chemist and inventor Dr. Peter Schlumbohm. Throughout his career he developed over 300 patents, ranging from cocktail shakers to automobiles. His focus was on making everyday objects more functional, attractive and enjoyable to use. When designing the CHEMEX® coffeemaker, Schlumbohm desired to make brewing the perfect cup of coffee at home simple and beautiful. As a chemist, he studied and understood the chemical reactions occurring during the extraction of flavor and caffeine from coffee beans. It was this knowledge that led him to invent the Bonded CHEMEX® paper filters for perfect extraction every time. For the carafe, Schlumbohm was inspired by the Bauhaus school of design and the non-porous labware used for his Chemistry experiments. Blending these elements, he fashioned the hourglass shape that has now become an iconic part of American history.  Made from one piece of borosilicate glass and adorned with a wooden collar and rawhide tie or glass handle, the CHEMEX® is pure in both form and function. The CHEMEX® has been recognized and awarded by the scientific, art and design communities. The coffeemaker and other CHEMEX® products can be found in the permanent collection of some of the most prestigious museums worldwide. The CHEMEX® coffeemaker was also selected by the Illinois Institute of Technology as one of the 100 best designed products of modern times.

We have several different coffeemaker “series” and a couple of stand alones, each with a slightly different design and various sizes.  Rest assured though, whichever one (or two!) you choose will function just as beautifully as any of the other types.From single serve to party size, dorm room to plenty of room and everything in between, we have something for everyone.

This is our CHEMEX “Single Serve”. The double walled borosilicate glass Funnex® brews from 5 up to 15oz. of CHEMEX® coffee. This unique brewer is portable, sturdy and highly functional. It comes with a silicone gasket for use with all types of cups, mugs and thermoses. One size available.

[H2] The ChemAer Coffeemaker
This combination brewer and aerator offers an additional design feature to explore the nuances and flavors of the coffee after extraction. Geared towards anyone who enjoys a good coffee experiment along with a great cup of coffee. Can be used to aerate smaller 10oz. - 20oz. batches or brew up to a full 40oz. pot of coffee. Available in 8 cup size (we measure in 5 oz cups).

“Extract the best and skip the rest!” – Brew coffee the Chemist’s way. – Dr. Peter SchlumbohmCHEMEX Bonded Filter paperWe have 6 different CHEMEX filters. They are all made from the same high-quality materials, function the same way, but have slight variations between them.
[H2] White paper & brown paper
The white filter paper goes through an oxygen cleansing bath followed by a series of hot water baths.  The brown filter paper goes through only the hot water baths, retaining the “natural” wood color.  We don’t use any bleach or chemicals in our filter paper.  They are both compostable.

FSU-100 (brown paper), FS-100 (white paper), FC-100 (white paper) , FP-1 (white paper)These are the 4 different filters used for coffeemakers size 6 cup and larger.  We have two pre-folded squares, the FSU-100 filter and the FS-100 filter.  Pre-folded white circle, the FC-100. Unfolded white circle, the FP-1.  They all function in the same manner, it just comes down to personal preference which one will be used.  Some people like the points on the square filters for easy removal. Some prefer to have the top of the filter flusher with the carafe, and some prefer to fold their own.

[H2] Filter paper for 3-cup and Funnex coffeemakers
FP-2 (white paper) and FP-2N (brown paper)These filters are used for the 3 cup coffeemakers and the Funnex®. The FP-2 and the FP-2N, also known as the “half-moon” filters.  They are half the size of the larger filters and need to be folded before use in the coffeemaker.

How to Use

Before First UseRemove the spout tip protective cover.Fill the Chettle™ with water up to the maximum level indicator and let the water boil.Pour out the hot water and repeat that process once more.After that, the Chettle™ is ready to use.Using the CHEMEX ChettleStep 1: Fill your Chettle™ with water
 between the MIN and MAX
fill lines.Warning: Not keeping your water levels between the MIN and MAX lines can result in bodily harm or damage to your kettle. Step 2: Heat your water Place your Chettle™ over the center of your burner. The stainless steel Chettle™ is compatible with 
electric, gas, and glass stove tops.Warning: The diameter of your electric and gas burner should ALWAYS be smaller in diamater than the Chettle bottom (6”). Do not let the flame of the gas burner spread beyond the bottom of the Chettle. Step 3: Wait for the boil When your Chettle™ comes to a boil remove it from your burner. Tip: After your water has come to a boil, remove it from the heat and let it rest for approximately 30 seconds before brewing.Step 4: Brew your favorite hot beverages Whether it be CHEMEX® coffee or tea the Chettle™ gives you the pour control you need for brewing success.Cleaning + descaling the kettle Mineral deposits, especially from hard water cause scalingwhich gradually slows down the heating process and reduces performance. Therefore, cleaning is an integral part of the equipment maintenance. Scale is not harmful to your health but it may give your drink a powdery taste. Don’t use abrasive cleaners that may harm the exterior or interior finish of your kettle.The kettle is dishwasher safe. Put the kettle upside down with the lid removed and placed separately into the dishwasher.You can easily clean the kettle by hand.Lime-scale residue can be removed with a warm water and vinegar or lemon juice solution. How to descale your Chettle

How to descale your kettle using vinegarFill the kettle with a solution of equal parts water and vinegar, and let soak for an hour. Next bring kettle to a boil and let the water and vinegar mixture sit in the kettle for another 15-20 minutes, discard water and rinse the kettle thoroughly.Dry and then refill the kettle with plain water again, bring to a boil to get rid of any lingering taste of vinegar.How to descale your kettle using lemon juiceMix 2 tablespoons of lemon juice with 2 cups of water in the kettle, and let soak for an hour. Next bring kettle to a boil and let the water and lemon juice mixture sit in the kettle for another 15-20 minutes, discard water and rinse the kettle thoroughly.Rinse out the kettle thoroughly then boil it again with clean water until the lemon scent is removed.

Direct heat focused under the handle may cause it to become too hot to hold. Both of these could cause injury or damage to your Chettle™.Hot water can cause serious burns, use caution while pouring. Do not touch the body or bottom of the Chettle™ during and some time after use, as it gets too hot to hold. Always lift the Chettle™ by its handle.Always have lid on when Chettle™ is in use. Be careful of steam when you open the lid immediately after the water has boiled.The Chettle™ is only intended for water.Depending on the hardness of the water in your area, small spots may appear in your Chettle™.
