The UGC is set to release a draft proposal outlining these revised guidelines for both CUET-UG (Undergraduate) and CUET-PG (Postgraduate) exams in 2025. As part of the process, the commission is inviting feedback and suggestions from various stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers, and academic institutions.
Experts believe these changes will help make the exam process more streamlined and fair.

Let’s take a closer look at what these proposed changes entail and how they might impact the CUET exams moving forward.
A shift to CBT mode
After the hybrid model, which was introduced last year in 2024, faced significant criticism, the CUET exam is likely to return to complete CBT mode this time.
Experts expressed that a shift to digital mode would minimise irregularities and malpractices in the exam, and would also avoid logistical challenges.
Ritesh Jain, Chief Mentor at AaptPrep CUET coaching, said, “The proposed changes are certainly appreciated. Last year, students faced numerous challenges due to the hybrid mode of testing. In Delhi, for instance, exams were cancelled and rescheduled, causing significant delays. Returning to the CBT format will undoubtedly offer a more reliable experience for students.”
Computer-based testing also helps mitigate issues like paper leaks and exam malpractices — concerns that became significant challenges for national-level exams this year, added mentors.
More focus on aptitude testing
Another major change ahead of the CUET 2025 exam is a significant reduction in the number of subjects. According to UGC Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, the number of subjects will be cut from 63 to 37, and the admissions for programmes in the dropped subjects will be based on the General Aptitude Test (GAT) scores.
Online education courses
Now, with these changes, there is expected to be a shift towards the General Aptitude Test or GAT. Varun Goel, Faculty at PhysicsWallah expressed that this year, the General Aptitude paper might become a “game-changer”.
“Last year, out of over 11 lakh candidates who appeared for CUET, around seven lakh had appeared for the General test. This trend is expected to change, as GAT will become mandatory for most subjects. This will significantly affect the cut-offs and ranklings as well,” said Goel.
Mentors have advised students to begin their CUET preparation with a heightened focus on the GAT paper, as it may prove challenging. This is especially true since aptitude-based learning is not part of the regular school syllabus.
Uniform duration, no optional questions
In CUET 2025, the students will see a standardised duration of 60 minutes for all subjects,  a shift from previous sessions where some papers allowed only 45 minutes. Mentors have praised this change, noting that it will reduce confusion and give students enough time to thoroughly attempt each paper.
Additionally, the UGC has made it mandatory for students to attempt all questions, removing the option to skip questions starting in 2025. This change is expected to impact preparation strategies.Flexibility in choosing subjects?
Another change that the UGC chairman announced is that the students can choose any subject for the exam, even if they did not pursue it in Class XII.
While this change surely offers more flexibility to students, the impact will also depend on the eligibility criteria set by individual universities. Experts noted that it remains to be seen how this change will be implemented once central universities release their admission brochures for the upcoming academic year.

[H2] CLAT 2024 Comprehensive Analysis
The paper was lengthy and time management was a big challenge again this year. The length of passages varied significantly from section to section and question to question giving slight relaxation in the form of smaller passages in sections like legal reasoning while compensating for it with longer passages, some going more than 600 words, in the English Section.
Sticking to its pattern, CLAT had 30 Questions in the English Language, 35 Questions in Current Affairs and General Knowledge, 40 Questions in Legal Reasoning, 30 Questions in Logical Reasoning and 15 Questions in Quantitative Techniques. Thus as expected Legal had maximum weightage and of course, quant had the least weightage.
[H2] CLAT 2024 Difficulty Level
The length was one factor that students struggled with to finish the paper. However overall difficulty level could be said to be easy to moderate. Most of the passages in all the sections were from contemporary issues which was a relief in terms of predictability and familiarity issues like COVID, the Russian Ukraine Crisis, Cryptocurrency, and CSR were something we had discussed in detail so it was easy to comprehend.

Starting with the legal section which was easy to moderate level CLAT slightly deviated from its love for sections like Torts and Criminal law but the Constitution was given its due place in three questions and International law and family law was a delight to see. Concepts like Monism and Dualism which is usually LLM level topics were seen and like always Contract had its spot in one question.
Three passages were from The Constitution including the right to religion, Writ of Mandamus and Freedom of movement which was not so difficult to comprehend as our students were repeatedly told that Fundamental rights is the most important topic under the Constitution.
Two passages from Family law including Bigamy and Special marriage act had a similar type of question put in different situations. The question of ‘Mistake’ under Contract was not so direct but could be implied from the passage. The Passage on Anthropocentrism and Eco- centrism was a bit unique this time but it had its inclination in Constitutional law only. Quant had only 15 questions and though may not be exactly 10th standard level but doable. They were as expected data interpretation questions with topics involving Percentage, Profit and Ratio. Quite doable and not so lengthy.

The English Section was time-consuming with six Reading Comprehension of relatively long lengths. RC topics involved Innovators recognition, Animal rights and western religion (which was 650 words long) Social media dependence, geo-political and fossil fuels (Again 600 words), Public speaking and cryptocurrency.

[H2] CLAT 2024 Difficulty Level of General Knowledge and Current Affairs
Finally, General Knowledge and Current Affairs was not easy as it started with a predictable Russian-Ukraine crisis with quite easy questions that anyone following the news should be able to attempt, but then it had questions about Drones which were very too specific and required in-depth reading. Questions regarding AFSPA required knowledge of the complete development over the past few years and questions regarding maritime strategy were again required detailed analysis. The expected focus was on Space Exploration Missions and green technology and questions regarding Corporate Social responsibility found its place.
Overall it can’t be said to be easy. Passages in the General Knowledge section were, like always, not much help in finding answers and were only to set the context. Overall, the difficulty level was moderate provided the candidates had good time management skills and if sufficient attention was given to all the questions considering the length of the paper. A score of 100+ would be considered as a good score.

[H4] English Language:
The English Language section of the CLAT exam was very lengthy. It had 6 Reading Comprehensions (5 Questions per Comprehension covering 30Q in total), 5 of which were non-fiction based (from journals, newspapers etc. covering Vaccination, Covid etc) and 1 was a fiction based comprehension (work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; from a short story of Sherlock Holmes). The questions were straightforward and largely based on an understanding of comprehension.

The Current Affairs Section had a total of 7 Passages (5 Questions per Passage covering 35Q in total) spread over Gandhi Peace Prize, Faith for Right Mechanism, Indo-China disengagement, Chabahar Day/INSTC, Ramsar Sites/World Wetland Day, Covid-19 Vaccines Maitri and World Water Day. Students could have attempted a lot of questions without reading the passages as well.

[H4] Quantitative Techniques
The Quantitative Techniques Section was very lengthy and difficult to attempt this year. It asked questions related to testing knowledge and concepts on simplifications, profit and loss, income and expenditures, percentages, ratios, averages etc. It was largely revolving around Arithmetic. There were no Graphs and all questions were based on caselets. There were a total of 15Q with 5Q asked in each case.

[H4] Critical Reasoning
The Critical Reasoning section had a total of 6 Passages (5 Questions per Passage covering 30Q in total) containing 3 passages on Covid-19, 1 each on the socio-economic status in schools, climate change impact on Asia and India and its neighbours. Most of the questions were asked on inferences/deductions/conclusions with some sprinkle of questions around strengthening and weakening. Barring 5 questions, the rest were straightforward.

[H4] Legal Reasoning
As expected, the section was on the tougher side. Find below its main points:1. No questions from Current Legal Knowledge.
2. Solving Previous Years’ Papers of CLAT and AILET would have helped the students as there were questions that used the same concepts as asked previously.
3. The Majority of the passages were from the topic – Law of Contracts. The language was technical and therefore understanding of key terms and legal vocabulary/theory was mandatory. Apart from the Law of COntracts there were passages from Hindu Marriage Act, Volenti Non fit Injuria etc
[H5] Level of Difficulty: Hard
Good Number of Attempts: 22+
Overall, students should have attempted at least 115 questions. The cut-offs are expected to be a little higher when compared to CLAT 2020 as the overall level of difficulty was high this year.
