– When: Tuesday 26th May – Where: Tinana State School – Who: Primary and Secondary Students (seperate divisions) – Time: Registration from 8.30am to 9.15am. Start at 9.30am and finish around 2.15pm (allow to 2.30pm to be safe) – Cost: $25.00 per player, invoiced to the school post event.
This event will have multiple divisions. Please ensure registration is done either via the website link or by sending an excel spreadsheet to [email protected] no later than Friday 22nd May
As always, if anyone is sick, we please ask them to stay away from the event where possible.
Medals will be awarded for 1st to 3rd teams and 1st to 3rd individuals in each division, with merit ribbons to those individuals scoring 4.5/7 or higher.
Invoices will be sent to schools after the event takes place. Please ensure that you have have read all the relevant policies and procedures below before entering the event.
Unregistered schools may have their students excluded from the first round of the tournament, at the Chief Arbiter’s discretion. Schools arriving late must contact the Gardiner Chess office at 07 5522 7221, and may also miss the first round.

Gardiner Chess holiday programs run from 8.30am to 4.00pm on selected days during the school holidays in both Brisbane and Gold Coast. During the day, students will have the chance to undertake lessons, play tournament matches and enjoy some fresh air. Holiday programs are often followed by a tournament on the final day which is open to all players. Most importantly students will have FUN!

[H2] The Gardiner Chess Way
Gardiner Chess runs coaching programs in schools throughout South-East Queensland via in person lessons. Our lessons are run in a way that enables students to learn chess properly, whilst also having fun in a safe environment. We believe in equipping our coaches with the best resources so as to allow them to teach chess to the best of their ability. Coaches go through extensive training processes before taking any classes themselves.
Unique to Gardiner Chess is the addition of a Chesskid.com membership for all students taking part in classes where parents pay us directly. As the largest partner of Chesskid.com in Australia, and the exclusive distributor in Queensland, we believe this program gives students another excellent opportunity to hone their skills in a safe online environment.

[H4] Doug Williams
Doug has been coaching for Gardiner Chess since 2010 and is one of the top junior chess coaches in South-East Queensland. Doug has fantastic chess knowledge and strives to inspire a passion for chess in all his students. Doug has coached many of the Gold Coast top students to success, and currently holds the FIDE Instructor qualification, and is very close to his FIDE Arbiter qualification.

[H4] Russell Reed
Russell joined the company in 2023 and has become a vital cog in the business since that time. Russell has a huge passion for chess and plays regularly, whilst he gets a huge kick from seeing students do well on their chess journey. Russell is heavily involved in the Somerset Chess Program with a focus on coaching and administration work to ensure things run smoothly. Russell also coaches at a number of other schools, and is involved in holiday programs and weekend tournaments. Wherever he goes, he is hugely popular with students and staff and has one of the best can do attitudes around! [email protected]

[H4] Luke Shanley
Luke joined us in 2023 and has become a very popular staff member in Brisbane! Luke coaches in schools around Brisbane and is working on something each day as he loves the game. Luke is also an avid tournament player and has even been getting into the YouTube video side of things under his handle of Thor Chess. Luke has been taking our regional online classes this year with heaps of positive feedback!

We have seen many cases where students have been able to use chess to make friends - not just from their school, but from other schools as well. Chess provides a safe space for students to interact with like-minded students which provides many long-term benefits for them.2
[H4] Problem Solving
Chess requires students to learn to navigate their way through a minefield of possibilities. For each possible path there are pros and cons which is just like real life. By learning to identify problems in our position (and our opponents) we then have to come up with solutions which change with every different move.
