How silly were we.
Sales team excellent, very patient and not pushy at all.

Amber is the best wholesale electricity provider for those with a battery. Solar rebates are near useless now and therefore making the return on investment from solar panels much longer. A way to improve that is to have more solar production and battery power than you need and then sell the extra in the early evening when prices are high. I'm also an Amber noob, having had an eye on them for a while as a solar early adopter (had systems for over a decade, since in UK and installed two since owning homes in Oz). What made it finally stack up for me was the SmartShift deal, having recently installed a 19.2 kWh battery to complement my 7.5 kWp array w/ 5 kWp inverter. Love that the (tunable to suit preference of saving money vs. having more usable battery) automation takes care of when to use solar, when to use battery, when to sell, when not to etc.. I can also take control if I want to. Currently, I’m tracking barely paying for elec. so will only have the subscription and standing charges to fix up, which is great.Ben Halkon May 1, 2025

[H3] How can charging be free?
Two ways. The first is by using your solar. When your panels are pushing out more than the house needs, that energy is essentially free. We point it at your car instead of letting it dribble back to the grid for a few cents. The second is by exposing you to wholesale prices. When there's a glut of renewable energy in the grid (sunny afternoon, windy night), wholesale prices fall, sometimes below 0c/kwh. On a wholesale plan, those moments turn into credits on your bill.
[H3] Why is there no fixed rate, like other EV plans have?
Amber passes on the wholesale price, which changes over time. Amber for EVs makes sure you only charge during the cheap times.EV plans with flat rates may not actually be as cheap as they look. They smooth out the highs and the lows, meaning you may never get the negative-price afternoons on offer from wholesale and you might be paying more for electricity at other times of the day to compensate. [H3] What happens when wholesale prices spike?
Wholesale prices can run as high as $19/kWh during high demand / low supply market events.Amber for EVs is designed to automatically avoid charging during price spikes, and the app will notify you when they occur. The Amber app notifies you with a heads-up when prices are spiking. Finally, we also offer a Bill Guarantee which caps your downside compared to the published market offer in your area.
