The Bespoke Process

Bespoke tailoring on Savile Row is an art perfected over almost 700 years. At Norton & Sons our tailoring team assemble each suit without compromise; each piece of cloth and canvas that goes into your suits is painstakingly marked and cut by hand; thousands of hand stitches join the cloth to its canvas interlinings; the sections of the garment are skillfully shaped by hand into your exact form; linings, edges and buttonholes are meticulously finished by hand.Appointments are available at our Bespoke Shop at 16 Savile Row or via our frequent international Trunks Shows.

The Bespoke process begins with a consultation. We will discuss where you will wear your clothes, your personal tastes and your lifestyle so that we can offer the correct advice on cloth, construction and detail. The process of choosing your cloth should be a pleasure. Specialising in British cloth, we also offer cloth from the leading cloth mills of the world.Once a style and cloth has been selected our master cutters will take your individual measurements and make notes on figure and posture.

From this our master cutter will hand-cut an individual pattern which will be refined throughout the fitting process, starting off with a basted fitting. A basted fitting is the 'outer shell' of your suit. Cut from your cloth yet minus detailing such as pockets, linings and finishes, we will conduct as many fittings as is needed to ensure the perfect fit.No detail is too small, everything is taken into account to ensure the garment will fit your perfectly, highlighting, adding and subtracting what is needed.

The final touches are added from buttons and buttonholes, embroidery and any finishing details, all by hand.Once your pattern has been perfected it is retained in our records for all future orders, speeding up the process for existing customers. The making of a single suit involves up to eleven craftsmen and may take between 60-80 hours. Your suit is passed through the hands of our finest coatmakers, trouser makers, finishers and pressers, all to result in a beautiful bespoke garment that is built to stand the test of time.

One of the key factors behind Norton & Sons' continued success constant evolution of its house cut. While deeply rooted in the rich heritage of Savile Row tailoring, Norton & Sons has never been one to rest on tradition alone or cling too rigidly to the past. The Norton cut is renowned for its distinctive, modern tailoring that blends classic elegance with a dynamic, forward-thinking approach. The jacket features a softer shoulder, creating a more natural, comfortable line that feels less stiff and more fluid. The close fit through the chest, coupled with a nipped-in waist and a gentle skirt provides a flattering silhouette that is both sharp without being overly structured. This shape is balanced by the high armhole, which adds comfort and movement ensuring that the suit is practical as well as form fitted.

Our Pricing

The price for a Bespoke suit starts from £6,000, Jackets from £4,500 and a Separate Trousers from £1,600. For Bespoke Shirts, we offer these from £325 and require no minimum order quantity. All prices are inclusive of VAT and are subject to change depending on the cloth selection.

We understand that you cannot always make the trip to see us in London and so our team will bring the Norton & Sons Savile Row experience to you. Our team makes frequent international visits throughout the year to the USA.We will meet with you, take your measurements and guide you through our cloth collection, styles and explain the process of creating your new order.Your order will be confirmed on Savile Row, where it will be cut on site and made ready for your next fitting. We can either arrange for fittings to be in London or at our next Trunk Show of your choice. We can also make private visits by special arrangement.

Our History

Norton & Sons was established on London’s Strand in 1821 by English tailor Walter Norton who built a thriving business in the City of London. Walter’s son James Norton joined the firm and in 1859 was granted the Freedom of the City of London in recognition of his services to tailoring. In the 1860’s Norton & Sons moved to Mayfair, join the swelling ranks of Savile Row tailors.

Norton & Sons continued to thrive in the latter half of the 20th century incorporated the celebrated Savile Row houses Hammond & Co, E. Tautz & Sons, J. Hoare & Co and Todhouse Reynard. Between these illustrious houses are proudly held ancient Royal Warrants to four successive British monarchs as well as warrants to the royal households of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Prussia, Spain, and Portugal. We have also clothed to two US Presidents.Norton’s made a name for dressing sportsmen and adventurers such as the young Winston Churchill, for whom we made everything from dinner suits to racing silks. We clothed many of the best dressed men of the past two centuries, including King Edward VII, Cary Grant, Bing Crosby and Anthony J Drexel Biddle, America’s Best Dressed Man. Our tailors developed an expertise in lightweight clothing for customers bound for Africa and the East; Lord Carnarvon was wearing a Norton & Sons suit when he opened Tutankhamen's tomb. Our contemporary lightweight unstructured tailoring continues this tradition.

Norton & Sons has long enjoyed an association with the fashion world, having made for famed French Couturiers Charles Frederick Worth and Paul Poiret, and worked for many years with couturier to the Queen Sir Hardy Amies. The House’s connection with the world of fashion has over the last decade worked with celebrated designers including Christian Louboutin, Alexander McQueen, Kim Jones and Christopher Kane, as well as several of the world’s greatest luxury brands.
