The Builder Fellowship places rising AI talent inside Block’s design and engineering teams
to tackle real challenges in the financial system. You’ll build products, prototypes, and AI
tools across Square, Cash App, Afterpay, Tidal, Proto, and Bitkey, as well as new
initiatives and internal projects. We’re looking for emerging builders and self-taught
experimenters who are exploring, making, and pushing boundaries with AI. Excellence and

[H3] What is the Builder Fellowship?
The Block Builder Fellowship places rising AI talent inside Block’s design and engineering teams to tackle real challenges in the financial system. Fellows work on live projects across Square, Cash App, Afterpay, TIDAL, Proto, Bitkey, and emerging initiatives. Fellows will design, prototype, and ship ideas that help more people access economic opportunity.
[H3] Who should apply?
We’re looking for builders — people experimenting with AI, engineering, design, and technology in creative ways. You might be self-taught, a student, a freelancer, or someone restarting your career. What matters is what you’ve built, not where you’ve worked or studied.
[H3] What do I need for the application?
Gather your proof of work: experiments, builds, prototypes, or creative projects. If you’re curious, inventive, and ready to reimagine how things get made with AI, we want to see what you’ve built.
[H3] Can I participate part-time?
No. This is a full-time program designed for deep engagement over six-plus months. The immersive experience — including programming, collaboration, and mentorship — needs full-time commitment.
[H3] How do you select Fellows?
We look for proof you can build. Show us your work — code, prototypes, visuals, experiments, or ideas in motion. A panel of designers, engineers, and creative technologists evaluate the applications for curiosity, craft, and bold experimentation.Selected candidates will showcase their work and talk with our builders across design, engineering, and product. The process explores craft, creativity, technical fluency, and collaboration, reflecting the way we build at Block.
[H3] Is the program paid?
Yes. The program is fully paid with benefits for the full span of the fellowship.
[H3] Where is the fellowship based?
The program is remote-first, with flexibility on location wherever permitted by local laws. We’ll have occasional in-person gatherings, like the cohort kickoff, in New York City; all travel costs for official events are fully covered. If you’re near a local Block office, you’re welcome to come in for coworking sessions and social events.
[H3] Is there an age requirement to apply?
Engineering Fellows must be 18+. The design track is available on a case-by-case basis for applicants aged 14 and older, in accordance with local guidelines, and can be adjusted for shorter durations. Please indicate this in your application, and we will try to shape an opportunity in collaboration with parents or legal guardians where applicable.
[H3] Will Fellows receive equipment?
Yes. We’ll equip Fellows with everything they need to imagine, build, and push boundaries from day one.
[H3] What kind of work will I do?
You’ll join active design and engineering teams working on AI tools, new prototypes, and creative experiments. Some projects will focus on improving existing experiences; others will explore entirely new ideas. You’ll have the freedom to explore, test, and ship alongside experienced builders across the Block brands.
[H3] Is there a chance to join Block full-time?
Yes. Fellows who demonstrate strong impact and alignment with Block’s purpose may be considered for full-time roles at the end of the program.
[H3] Does Block support visas for Fellows?
At this stage, the fellowship is open to candidates who are authorized to work in their country of residence. We’re not able to sponsor visas for this pilot program, but we hope to expand opportunities globally in future cohorts.
[H3] Do I need to live in the U.S. to apply?
Block is remote-first, so you can apply from anywhere we hire around the world. We’ll review eligibility individually, since local employment laws vary by country.
[H3] How many Fellows will you select?
The pilot cohort will include 10 Fellows. What we learn from this first group will shape how we expand future cohorts and opportunities.
