Industry Context — Common BS Fingerprints in Food, Restaurants & Delivery
Generic Claims: the best food in town, authentic flavors, made with love, quality ingredients…
Red Flags: no food hygiene rating displayed, stock food photography, locally sourced claims without naming any supplier, award claims without verifiable source…
Semantic Drift Patterns: homepage claims fine dining but menu prices are casual, claims locally sourced but no suppliers named, homepage shows plated dishes but delivery menu is different items, claims authentic cuisine but menu is fusion with no cultural specificity…
Proof Expectations: food hygiene rating displayed, named ingredient suppliers and sources, chef background and culinary credentials, real food photography not stock images…

Notes for evening bookings

As our evening menus are a set menu, please ensure you have visited our menu page to see the menu for your chosen evening (menus released 4 weeks in advance). It is also essential to share with us any dietary or allergen requirements for your booking to ensure we are prepared for your visit to Base - there is space to do this in the online booking form.

Please note that card details are requested and securely stored by our payment service (not Base). These details are stored and a charge will only be taken in the event of non-attendance of your booking or if your booking is not cancelled in line with our cancellation policy (see below).
Cancellation Policy:

The card details taken upon booking are used to collect a deposit amount in the event of a missed reservation. If your reservation is cancelled more than 48 hours prior to your booking, no payment will be taken. Should you miss your reservation without notifying us or cancel your table (within 48 hours of the reservation time), £20 per person will be charged via the payment method provided.

Additional notes for tasting menu evenings: The card details taken upon booking are used to collect the price for the evening in the event of a missed reservation. Should you miss your reservation without notifying us or cancel your table (within 48 hours of the reservation time), the total cost of the food will be charged via the payment method provided. Charges will also be incurred should you arrive with a smaller party than the number reserved without 48 hours notice. Please note, Base does not hold any card details for customers and this service is securely provided by our payment service.

It is with our sincerest apologies that these measures are in place - as all of our food is locally sourced and prepared from scratch on site, 48 hours is the most we can offer due to the nature of the ordering and preparation of food for your evening.

Your Diagnosis

Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.

Information Density 0 / 30
Read the Narrative & headings: do hard facts (prices, dates, numbers) outweigh fluff power-words?
Semantic Coherence 0 / 20
Compare the homepage promise against the sub-page reality. Do they hold the same line?
Trust & Proof 0 / 20
Weigh review mentions against actual external proof links. Claims without verification = theatre.
Commodity Fingerprint 0 / 15
Check headings & narrative against the industry clichés in the setup above.
Identity & Authority 0 / 15
Inspect the schema: is there real Organization/Person identity with sameAs links, or gaps?
Your predicted BS score 0 / 100
💡 Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)

These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.

Information Density

Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.

Semantic Alignment

Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.

Trust & Proof

Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.

Commodity Fingerprint

Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.

Identity & Authority

Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.

Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

34 BS / 100

Base Restaurant is a high-substance local business hindered by amateur technical SEO and a lack of ‘last-mile’ verification for its prestigious claims. It scores a 34 because it prioritizes logistical clarity (booking rules, locations) over marketing hallucinations, though it fails to technically prove its AA Rosette status. The BS present is ‘accidental’—stemming from technical laziness rather than intentional deception.

Immediately replace the H1 tags containing an email address with specific, brand-led headings like ‘Casual Fine Dining in Ulverston.’ Create a dedicated ‘Suppliers’ section naming the specific Cumbrian farms and local businesses mentioned in the ‘locally sourced’ claims. Add outbound links to the official AA Rosette guide and the chef’s professional social profiles to verify the ‘award-winning’ status. Incorporate ‘sameAs’ properties into the schema_json to link to TripAdvisor, Michelin, or AA entries for third-party validation.

The website perfectly aligns with the Food, Restaurants & Delivery sector, specifically focusing on ‘Casual Fine Dining’ and event hosting. The content confirms this through detailed booking policies for tasting menus, references to local sourcing, and wedding packages.

“The score of 34 is driven by strong Semantic Coherence and moderate Information Density, offset by gaps in Identity and Authority. The lack of verified proof paths for the 'Award-winning' and 'AA Rosette' claims prevented a 'Minimal BS' score. Technical failures in heading hierarchy (H1 email) and the absence of supplier names contributed to the Identity and Authority penalty.”
