Nieuwe satelliet om de invloed van de Zon beter te
begrijpen

Morgen 19 mei om 05u52 onze tijd lanceert het Europees Ruimtevaartagentschap (ESA) vanuit
Kourou, Frans-Guyana, de SMILE-missie. Deze satelliet gaat onderzoeken hoe de zon de aarde
beïnvloedt, en wat er gebeurt wanneer zonnewinden onze planeet raken. Zo kunnen we onze
technologie hier en in de ruimte beter beschermen. Aan boord zit bovendien weer een sterk staaltje
Belgische kennis.

CINEMATEK: 6000 minuten Belgische film gered

In Brussel bewaart CINEMATEK meer dan één miljoen filmrollen. Dankzij het project RESTORED zijn
ondertussen al 6000 minuten Franstalige Belgische film gedigitaliseerd en gerestaureerd, films die
decennialang stof lagen te vergaren.
Vier dagen per film, zes rollen: een filmarchief digitaliseer je niet met één klik. Vandaag is zes
procent van de collectie toegankelijk voor het publiek. Ondanks dit stevige tempo zou het zo nog
meer dan een eeuw duren om de rest te digitaliseren.

Tussen de kunstwerken: een studie over Hans Memling in het
hart van Brugge

Het is zover! De tweede aflevering van ‘Choose Belgium’, onze reeks die het woord
geeft aan internationale onderzoekers die voor België kozen om wetenschap vooruit te helpen.

Melis Avkiran is kunsthistorica. Tijdens haar studies in Duitsland miste ze het rechtstreekse
contact met de kunstwerken die ze bestudeerde. Onderzoeksverblijven in België brachten haar in
contact met onze universiteiten, musea en erfgoedsector. Ze is wetenschappelijk onderzoekster aan
het Koninklijk Instituut voor het Kunstpatrimonium (KIK-IRPA) en postdoctoraal onderzoeker aan de
UCLouvain...

We presenteren je hierbij de eerste aflevering van Choose Belgium, onze nieuwe
reeks die het woord geeft aan internationale onderzoekers die voor België kozen om wetenschap
vooruit te helpen. Noel Catherine Baker is klimaatwetenschapper. Na een doctoraat in de Verenigde
Staten en een postdoctoraat aan NASA Langley ging ze aan de slag bij Europese Commissie en
vervolgens het Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Ruimte-Aeronomie, van de tien Federale
Wetenschappelijke Instellingen (FWI) onder coördinatie van BELSPO.

Un nouveau satellite pour mieux comprendre
l'influence du
Soleil sur la Terre 

Demain, le 19 mai, à 05h52 heure belge, l'Agence spatiale européenne (ESA) lancera depuis
Kourou, en Guyane française, la mission SMILE. Ce satellite étudiera comment le Soleil influence
la Terre et ce qui se passe lorsque les vents solaires frappent notre planète. De quoi mieux
protéger notre technologie, au sol comme dans l'espace. À bord : du savoir-faire belge de haut
vol !

CINEMATEK : 6000 minutes de cinéma belge sauvées

À Bruxelles, la CINEMATEK conserve plus d'un million de bobines. Grâce au projet RESTORED, ses
équipes ont déjà numérisé et restauré 6000 minutes de films belges francophones, endormis depuis des
décennies.
Quatre jours par film, six bobines, un travail d'orfèvre : numériser une cinémathèque ne se fait pas
en un clic. Aujourd'hui, 6 % du fonds est accessible au public. Malgré ce rythme soutenu, à ce
train-là, il faudrait plus d'un siècle pour numériser le reste.

Melis Avkiran est historienne de l'art. Pendant ses études en Allemagne, elle ressentait la distance
entre l'université et les œuvres qu'elle étudiait. Des séjours de recherche en Belgique l'ont amenée
à nouer des contacts avec nos universités, nos musées et le secteur du patrimoine. Elle est
aujourd'hui chercheuse scientifique à l'Institut royal du Patrimoine artistique (KIK-IRPA) et
chercheuse postdoctorale à l'UCLouvain.

CINEMATEK: 6,000 minutes of Belgian cinema saved

In Brussels, CINEMATEK holds more than one million film reels. Thanks to the RESTORED project, its
teams have already digitized and restored 6,000 minutes of French-language Belgian films that had
remained unseen for decades.
Four days per film, six reels, painstaking craftsmanship: digitizing a film archive is no simple
task. Today, only 6% of the collection is accessible to the public. Even at this steady pace, it
would take more than a century to digitize the remainder.
