Andes Virus (Hantavirus) Update

The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) is currently monitoring two New Jersey residents after a potential exposure to hantavirus connected to the MV Hondius cruise ship outbreak.As of May 8, 2026, the outbreak includes five confirmed cases and three suspected cases among passengers from several countries, with three reported deaths.At this time, no confirmed hantavirus cases have been identified in New Jersey, and the overall risk to residents remains very low.Please click here for additional information. Last Call to Register Your Short-Term Rental

In accordance with the recently adopted Ordinance #2025‑20, the Office of Rental Housing Inspections has launched the Short‑Term Rental Permit Application on OpenGov. Property owners who currently operate, or intend to operate, a short‑term rental are required to register their property and complete an inspection in order to obtain a valid permit. Beginning in April, the Municipality will be partnering with a third‑party vendor to identify unregistered short‑term rentals. The Princeton Human Services Department is partnering with the State of New Jersey's Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CBVI) Project B.E.S.T. to offer a FREE eye screening clinic for residents.This clinic is designed to improve access to vision care, particularly for low-income individuals who may not receive regular eye exams or have vision insurance. Joint Statement from the Municipality of Princeton and Princeton Public Library

The Municipality of Princeton and the Princeton Public Library (PPL) are pleased to share that they have reached an agreement to close the remaining $149,000 gap in the 2026 library budget.As part of this plan, the Municipality will increase its contribution by $75,000. The Library will help offset these costs by restructuring its employee parking permits, reducing the total number by 10. PPL will close the remaining $75,000 through fundraising and other revenue generating efforts.Both the Municipality and the Library value the strong partnership they share. The Municipality is proud to support the Library and the high-quality programs and services it provides to the community. New Signs, Same Great Parks

Princeton’s parks are getting a fresh look! New signs have started appearing in park entrances, beginning with Herrontown Woods and Farmview Fields, where the first installations went up in September. The signs highlight native plants and animals you might encounter in that park. Next up: Autumn Hill Reservation and Barbara Smoyer Park, as the updated signage continues to roll out across Princeton’s green spaces.

Stewarding Forest Regeneration at 153-Acre Wood

Some of Princeton’s most beautiful old-growth forest lies within the 153-Acre Wood along Province Line Road. This beech-dominated woodland, however, is facing a serious threat: beech leaf disease. First detected in New Jersey about five years ago, the disease causes leaf browning, curling, and loss — and ultimately leads to the death of the tree.As the beech trees decline, openings form in the forest canopy, allowing more sunlight to reach the forest floor. While this would normally stimulate a new generation of native trees and shrubs, those seedlings face an uphill battle. An overabundant deer population quickly browses native growth, while invasive species like multiflora rose, burning bush, and barberry — which deer tend to avoid — thrive in the understory.To help restore the forest naturally with native species, Princeton’s Open Space Manager, intern Eric Clemson, and volunteers from the Ridgeview Conservancy gathered for a stewardship session on a humid July morning. Together, they installed protective tree tubes around more than 100 seedlings of native oak, hickory, tulip poplar, spicebush, and maple along the Beech Hollow Loop.The tubes, while not visually striking, serve an important role. They protect young trees from deer browsing, act like mini-greenhouses to support early growth, and encourage vertical growth by gently restraining lateral branching. This helps the seedlings grow taller, faster. The tubes will stay in place for several years, until the trees reach a trunk diameter greater than four inches and a height above 58 inches — beyond the reach of browsing deer. At that point, the trees will be better able to survive on their own and contribute to a healthy, resilient forest canopy for generations to come.

A ribbon cutting ceremony marked the grand opening of the preserve to the public and Princeton’s continued commitment to the stewardship of local ecosystems. The preserve is now one of Princeton’s largest areas of protected land and provides residents and visitors with expanded access to green space, recreational opportunities, and opportunities for wildlife viewing.
