Training Example: RAND – Review the Data, Give Your Score & Compare to the Real AI Evaluation

Industry Context — Common BS Fingerprints in Government, Municipal & Public Sector
Generic Claims: serving our community, committed to transparency, working for you, building a better future for all…
Red Flags: no published financial data, no meeting minutes or decision records, contact information that leads to dead ends, claims of transparency without published data…
Semantic Drift Patterns: homepage claims digital-first but most services require in-person visits, transparency commitment but no meeting minutes published, citizen engagement language but no consultation mechanisms, claims efficiency but service pages show bureaucratic processes…
Proof Expectations: published budgets and financial statements, council meeting minutes and agendas, performance metrics and service delivery data, FOI response rates and timelines…

[H2] Better policy. Brighter future.
Health care. National security. Education. International relations. Emerging technologies.

The challenges facing humanity are complex. So is the policy landscape decisionmakers must navigate to create positive change.

RAND's mission is straightforward. We help improve policy and decisionmaking through research and analysis. Our rigorous research is free from political or commercial pressures so that policy leaders can use the best possible data to make the best possible decisions.

Why is this work so vital? Because when RAND can help improve policymaking, we can help make the world a better place for us all.
[H2] What We Do

Our research has informed countless policies related to the world’s most pressing problems since RAND was founded in 1948.

[H3] Conduct rigorous research

Our research model is designed with integrity at its center. All RAND research is held to our rigorous standards and robust quality assurance process.

[H3] Tackle consequential challenges

Sponsored research and philanthropic support allow us to confront today’s most daunting policy issues. Our interdisciplinary approach helps us consider every angle.

[H3] Provide actionable insights

We inform public policy by providing leaders with sharp recommendations that meet the moment. RAND research helps decisionmakers act on the best evidence.

[H3] Advance public discourse

Outreach via congressional testimony, media engagement, and work with local communities helps us inform the public and improve policy debates.

[H2] Who We Are
People are the key to RAND’s success. RAND employees are experts in their fields who are comfortable working across disciplines. Our stable of researchers; policy analysts; data scientists; and communications, legal, financial, and operational professionals is deep and diverse. With campuses in Santa Monica, CA, and the Washington, DC, area, the RAND School also offers master's degrees in policy analysis, national security policy, and technology policy. Our school cultivates the next generation of policy leaders.

[H2] How We're Funded
Our research is sponsored by U.S. government agencies; U.S. state and local governments; allied non-U.S. governments, agencies, and ministries; international organizations; colleges and universities; foundations; professional associations; other nonprofit organizations; and industry.

We operate four federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs)—independent entities that conduct research for the U.S. government and advise government leaders.

We also rely on philanthropic support to reach beyond the scope of client-sponsored work to tackle questions that may be too big, too complex, or too new for our clients to address.

Your Diagnosis

Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.

Information Density 0 / 30
Read the Narrative & headings: do hard facts (prices, dates, numbers) outweigh fluff power-words?
Semantic Coherence 0 / 20
Compare the homepage promise against the sub-page reality. Do they hold the same line?
Trust & Proof 0 / 20
Weigh review mentions against actual external proof links. Claims without verification = theatre.
Commodity Fingerprint 0 / 15
Check headings & narrative against the industry clichés in the setup above.
Identity & Authority 0 / 15
Inspect the schema: is there real Organization/Person identity with sameAs links, or gaps?

💡 Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)

These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.

Information Density

Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.

Semantic Alignment

Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.

Trust & Proof

Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.

Commodity Fingerprint

Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.

Identity & Authority

Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.

Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

To reach a sub-10 score, the site should implement granular Person schema for all researchers mentioned in H3 tags to link them to their external academic footprints. It could also reduce the repetitive use of the ‘nonpartisan’ and ‘objective’ descriptors in meta descriptions to lower concept repetition. Finally, adding specific performance metrics for the RAND School—such as graduation rates or alumni placements—would further harden the ‘Who We Are’ section.

The site is an exact match for the Government and Public Sector industry, specifically within the research and policy analysis niche. Content is heavily focused on public value, evidence-based policy, and government-sponsored research (FFRDCs).

“The score of 12 is driven primarily by the inevitable use of industry-standard jargon and standard 'About/Careers' template structures. It represents a 'Minimal BS' rating, indicating a site where almost every claim is backed by forensic substance.”
