Our facial appearance is partly genetically predetermined due to our unique collagen and elastin production, but is also influenced by our exposure to sunlight, pollution, and affected by things such as smoking and a poor diet. The muscles in our face determine our facial expressions, as we age this can create wrinkles in the skin, combined with the loss of fatty tissue (facial fat pads) in the face this can lead to the signs of ageing. [H2] What is BOTOX
​
Botulinum toxin is produced by clostridium botulinum bacteria and acts by interrupting nerve signals to the muscle which will temporarily block muscle movement. The effect of BOTOX may last 3 months or more. It wasn’t until 2002 that the FDA approved Botox for the treatment of frown lines. Cosmetic indications of BOTOX that are currently licensed include treatment of the forehead horizontal lines, glabella (frown lines) the lateral canthus (crow’s feet) and for excessive sweating. Other indications include chronic headache and migraine, facial spasm and teeth grinding. Botox is a prescription medicine and this will be prescribed for you during your consultation.

[H3] Is there a reason why I shouldn’t have Botox?

There may be. You should not have Botox injections if you are allergic to Botox or any of its excipients or if you have myasthenia gravis, Eaton-Lambert syndrome, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. It may also not be possible to have Botox if you have a history of Bell’s palsy, bleeding disorders, or taking NSAIDs, aspirin, vitamin A, St John’s wort, ginkgo biloba or taking any aminoglycoside antibiotics. Speak to your therapist regarding any issues you may have.

You should also not have Botox treatment if you have active Hashimoto’s or Graves’ disease (thyroid problems) rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus, scleroderma, vasculitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, vitiligo or psoriasis.

[H4] What areas can be treated?

After a consultation to establish suitability, the most common areas treated with BOTOX are the upper face – forehead and frown lines above the eyes (glabella) as well as the lines to the sides of the eye known as the crow’s feet. Other areas can be treated such as Marionette lines, smoker’s lines around the lips or the armpits to control excessive sweating. You can discuss the areas you want treated in your consultation. [H4] Is the treatment painful?

You will be having multiple injections into the skin on the face so he may feel some discomfort. The needles used during the process are very small and fine and it should be no different to receiving facial acupuncture. If you are concerned about any discomfort we can apply a local anaesthetic cream or simply treat the area with ice to numb the skin prior to injection.

[H5] Are there any side-effects?

It’s important to note that the vast majority of treatments go well with only minor discomfort. Common side-effects include redness, bruising and mild swelling. You may also have a slight headache after the treatment and there may be some asymmetry to the face after the treatment. It can take up to 2 weeks for the treatment to take effect.

Less common side effects include a Spock brow, brow ptosis and eyelid ptosis. Careful injection placement and technique can minimise this risk. Rare side-effects include blurred or double vision, infection and any allergic reaction. You will be monitored after the appointment to make sure there is no allergic reaction and we have adrenaline and other life-saving equipment on site.

[H6] What happens next?

You should aim to keep the treated muscles active for a few hours after your treatment by smiling and frowning and avoid extremes of hot or cold (including sauna), excessive sunlight exposure, vigorous exercise, lying down or leaning over for 4-6 hours.

As with cosmetic acupuncture you should start to see the effect of treatment within 2 or 3 days, for some people this takes longer. The full result may be judged at 2-3 weeks. You will have a follow up consultation 2 weeks after your treatment to discuss and resolve any issues that may have arisen so that you are happy with your treatment effect.

We use the best products on the market approved and licensed for aesthetic use. We use allergan botox.

[H6] Will I need ongoing treatment?

Nobody needs ongoing treatment; however, the treatment effect will wear off over 3-4 months and the facial muscles will start to move again. If you were happy with the effects of your previous treatment and you can move the muscles of the face again you will need a further treatment at this point. For those who are concerned about ongoing treatment Facials and peels are an alternative.

Dermal fillers consist of hyaluronic acid which is a glycosaminoglycan with exceptional water binding capacity (approximately 1000 times as dry weight). Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body and is found in the joints and skin. In the skin it helps to restore and volumise facial contours for a more youthful looking appearance.

[H2] Is there a reason why I shouldn’t have dermal fillers?

There may be. You should not have dermal filler if you are pregnancy and breastfeeding or have an allergy to hyaluronic acid or local anaesthetic (lidocaine), have any active infections and inflammation in the proposed treatment area, herpes in the area, solid granulomas in the area, or are having any cancer treatment. Other reasons not to have dermal fillers include porphyria, untreated epilepsy, tendency towards keloid or hypertrophic scars, taking any vitamin K anticoagulants, or if you suffer from any autoimmune disease such as active Hashimoto or Graves’ disease (thyroid diseases) rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus, scleroderma, vasculitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, vitiligo or psoriasis.

The lower face tends to be treated with filler such as the cheeks, jawline, chin and lips to create volume for the loss of facial fat pads or volumise the lips.

Many of the products used come with local anaesthetic to reduce any discomfort. It’s important to note that the vast majority of treatments go well with only minor discomfort. Common side-effects include redness, bruising and mild swelling and should resolve spontaneously within a few days of treatment. Unfortunately, uncommon side effects do happen and they include infection and inflammation, skin discoloration, abscess formation, plumps, nodules or papules, acne like formations, or a granuloma presenting as lumps or nodules. The blood supply to the skin may be interrupted by swelling or inadvertent injection into a vessel, causing pain, skin damage and possible scarring. You will be monitored after the appointment to make sure there is no allergic reaction and we have adrenaline and other life-saving equipment on site.

You should be able to continue with your normal activities immediately after treatment (if you are also having BOTOX read the separate BOTOX aftercare information). Some people will have some redness, pin prick marks and swelling (particularly in the lips). Make-up should not be worn for 12 hours.

You are advised to avoid alcohol, vigorous exercise, sunbathing, and extremes of heat or cold for 14 days post treatment. These activities have been found to increase and prolong swelling.

If you also had BOTOX you should start to see the effect of treatment within 2 or 3 days, for some people this takes longer. The full result may be judged at 2-3 weeks. You will have a follow up consultation 2 weeks after your treatment to discuss and resolve any issues that may have arisen so that you are happy with your treatment effect. The best results are achieved with a full face rejuvenation.

[H6] What dermal filler products do you use?
​
We use juvederm. Voluma is the thickest filler and used for any on the bone injections such as the chin, cheeks or angle of jaw. Volift is slightly less thick and used for Marionette lines, nasolabial folds and cannula treatments. Volbella is the least thick filler and is used for the lips (along with Ultra Smile), and mid face cannula treatments.

In some circumstances we can mix and match for example you could use 0.5ml of Volbella in the lips and then the remaining 0.5ml in a cannula in the Marionette lines, however we wouldn’t use Voluma in the lips or Volbella for deep injections on the bone and the correct product must be used for the correct area priced at £300 per syringe used.

[H6] Will I need ongoing treatment?

Nobody needs ongoing treatment; however, the treatment effect of fillers will wear off over 6-12 months. If you were happy with the effects of your previous treatment and you have lost the volume in your face again you will need a further treatment at this point.

Exfoliating peels of the upper layers of the skin are good for pigmentation, acne, acne scarring and for skin rejuvenation. The goal is to remove a predictable, uniform layer of skin. Every patient should be aiming to have a peel before starting their facial treatment plan or Obagi home care kits to optimise their results. The depth of the peel is dictated by the type of chemical, the concentration and mode of action. Peels use chemicals, either alpha-hydroxy acids (water soluble) such as glycolic acid, mandelic or lactic acid or beta-hydroxy acids (fat soluble) such as salicylic acid.

We use Obagi Blue Peel Radiance, This is a superficial peel using beta hydroxy acid (BHA), with no prep required, suitable for all skin types and no down time. It’s indicated for hyper pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, mild scarring or if you just want to brighten and lighten the skin. We don’t recommend you have this peel if you have active psoriasis on the face or rosacea or are pregnant of Brest feeding. You need to avoid the use of any vitamin A products (retinol or tretinoids) and any products containing AHA or BHA for 72 hours either side of your peel. We also offer a plant enzyme peel from Janssen.
We recommend 4-6 peels every 2-4 weeks as it takes 2 weeks for corneas stratum to repair.

[H2] What is micro-needling?

Micro-needling is a revolutionary skincare treatment that aims to lift, tighten and rejuvenate the skin. Micro-needling is performed using a derma pen, a handheld device with a tip full of fine needles that is designed to be used at home or in-clinic by a medical professional. The needles are quickly and repeatedly inserted into the skin at a depth of 0.5 to 2.5mm, creating 100’s if not 1000’s of tiny puncture wounds into the upper layers of the skin. These tiny puncture wounds create microtrauma in the skin and stimulate growth factors and fibroblasts in the dermis to produce more connective tissues – collagen and elastin.

As we age less collagen and elastin are produced in the skin and the appearance becomes saggy, loose and dull. Aging and sun exposure also results in fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots (pigmentation) in the skin. These can be treated with skin creams and serums, but this only moisturises the outer dead skin cells that form the epidermis. Micro-needling creates channel through the skin to the deeper dermis that allows for greater penetration of the nutrients in the creams and serums.

[H4] What serums are used during micro-needling?

We use either hyaluronic acid (HA) or platelet rich plasma (PRP) as our serums of choice for micro-needling. The benefit of the serum is that the derma pen glides across the skin during treatment so the entire face and neck can be treated easily. HA and PRP can penetrate to the dermis where the keratinocytes are producing new skins cells, nourishing and hydrating this process for healthy abundant skin cell production. PRP also further stimulate collagen production leading to firming healthy looking skin.

[H5] What is PRP micro needling?

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) uses your own blood plasma, which is full of growth factors that help to repair injured tissues including skin damage. Some blood is taken from your arm and then spun in a centrifuge to produce the plasma. This in then injected into your face using fine cosmetic needles or using micro needling such as a derma pen.

[H6] Is there a reason why I shouldn’t have PRP micro needling?

There are very few reasons why you can’t have PRP treatments except for active infection or inflammation in the proposed treatment area. There are minimal side effects to using PRP as you are using your own biological tissue.

We can treat any area of the face or scalp (for hair loss) with PRP.

[H6] I need to have blood drawn from my arm?

Yes, we will do this at the start of the treatment, then centrifuge it to produce the PRP.

[H6] How many micro needling treatments are needed?

It takes roughly 3 months from the time the skin cell are produced in the deep layer of the dermis to the point that they migrate to the epidermis and are sloughed off. Thus, we recommend a micro-needling treatment once every three months as a maintenance. It may be required to have monthly treatments for the first 3 months to help nourish and stimulate healthy skin cell production.

[H6] Do I need to do anything before the treatment?

It’s advisable to stop using any Vitamin A or retinol containing creams and avoid fish oil or any anti-inflammatory tablets for 3-5 days before treatment to reduce the risk of skin irritation or increased risk of bleeding. Make sure you skin is bare for the treatment – no makeup or foundation whatsoever.

[H6] What’s happens during a treatment?

We will first apply numbing cream to the face. This takes 15-30 minutes to be absorbed and numb the skin. You may still feel slight discomfort during the treatment as we cannot fully anesthetise the skin. Next, we will take blood from your arm and spin it in a centrifuge to create the PRP. Finally, we will sterilise the skin with chlorhexidine before starting your micro-needling treatment. After the micro-needling we will apply a soothing hyaluronic acid face mask to cool and calm the face. The micro-needling allows the HA serum to be absorbed to the dermis to hydrate and nourish the new skin cells.

[H6] Is there any after-care advice?

As we with other cosmetic treatments such as BOTOX or fillers do not apply make up for 24 hours. Do not go swimming, exercising or take strenuous activity for the first 24 hours post-treatment. Failure to follow this advice increases the risk of post treatment infection. Avoid active skincare for at least 7 days post-treatment, except for applying a hyaluronic acid serum. Avoid extended periods in the sun and apply a broad-spectrum SPF.

[H6] Is there any downtime after this treatment?

During the first 24-48 hours after your treatment, you will experience redness and your skin will flake. Avoid using micro-needling if you wish to attend an event within 48 – 72 hours post-treatment.

Can I make a face cream from PRP?

Yes, we can put some of your PRP into a base serum which you can keep in the fridge at home and use for 90 days. This can be done as a separate service or after a prp appointment and will incur an additional charge for the base cream.
