Generic Claims: trusted news source, unbiased reporting, the truth, delivered, journalism that matters…
Red Flags: no named editorial staff, sponsored content without clear labelling, no corrections or complaints policy, ownership and funding not disclosed…
Semantic Drift Patterns: claims editorial independence but content is sponsored, claims fact-checked but no corrections policy visible, homepage says investigative but content is aggregated wire stories, claims community voice but no local reporting staff…
Proof Expectations: named journalists and editorial staff, published editorial standards and ethics code, corrections and complaints policy, ownership and funding transparency…

[H2] Student Reviews

“One of the best decisions I’ve made for my writing journey.”
The practical dos and don’ts taught throughout the course gave me a clear understanding of what works and what doesn’t when it comes to writing. It was like being allowed to peek behind the curtain of that secret author’s club that had always felt so elusive.
— Blair R.

“By far the best writing class I have ever taken.”
There’s an age old adage that to be a writer, you must first, and always, be a reader. Reedsy puts this into practice with the structure of this course, helping writers understand what makes a passage powerful by dissecting it with a skillful teacher.
— Nora S.

“It feels like a mini MFA in fiction writing.”
Such a thoughtful, clear, inspirational course. It more than earns its investment in time and money.
— Jesse G.

“The course was superb.”
The daily lessons worked really well for me; I loved that I could watch them anytime and the topics, content and books covered were really helpful.
— Simon H.

“I feel much more confident in going forward with my story.”
I really enjoyed this course, it has helped me so much at a line level — it has elevated my writing in ways I didn’t even know needed elevating.
— Alana V.

“Going well beyond the simple.”
Anyone can write a book. But it takes more than a simple understanding to write a good book. The time I spent in the Reedsy Masterclass with Tom Bromley were the best three months I could have invested. Without a doubt, it made a vast improvement in my abilities.
— Michael B.

“Writing a novel has never been easier, thanks to Reedsy.”
The course is so well presented and expertly taught, with a huge amount of resources to help you finish that first draft. I’d recommend it to anyone!
— Lucy R.

[H4] Prepare

[H4] Get ready to write

Tom will go over the “5 P’s” you need to consider before embarking on 101 days of writing.

[H4] Pitch

[H4] Protagonist

[H4] Plotting

[H4] Point-of-view

[H4] Place

[H4] Start

A great book grabs the reader from the get-go. This course begins at the beginning, then guides you through the writing process, right to the closing sentence. It’s everything you need to write your novel, except the coffee (we haven’t worked out how to digitize that yet).

[H4] Week One

[H3] Beginnings

We start with the start. What is the best way to begin your novel and hook the reader’s attention? How do you introduce elements like character and backstory?

Session Topics: Beginnings, Starting Again, Introducing Character, Backstory, Grounding the Reader.

[H4] Week Two

[H3] Secret Sauce

In this week’s sessions, we’ll look at the magic ingredients that you need to sprinkle into your story to make your characters and narrative come alive.

Session Topics: Movement, Change, Space, Peril, Voice.

[H4] Week Three

[H3] Character

Character and Plot are both crucial for your story. But thinking about character first often helps to answer any plot questions you might have.

Session Topics: Caring and Liking, Flaws, Inner Tension, Change, Feeling.

[H4] Week Four

[H3] Plot Skills 1

Plot and structure is a theme interweaved throughout the course. In this first week of plot skills, we’ll focus in on some of the principles of plotting to help you tell your story.

Session Topics: Story DNA, Scene Versus Summary, Revealing Information, Flashbacks, Mystery and Surprise.

[H4] Week Five

[H3] Description

A good story has a good place at its heart. But how do you bring your settings to life? We’ll analyse some of the key techniques to help you write dynamic description.

Session Topics: Senses, Movement, Colour, Small Details, People and the Past.

[H4] Week Six

[H3] Dialogue

Speech is central to good fiction: get it right and you’ll add voice, pace, and tension into your telling. We’ll show you how.

Session Topics: Voice, Conflict, Rhythm, Real Speech, Body Language.

[H4] Week Seven

[H3] Texture

Dialogue and Description are two key textures in writing a story. This week, we’ll look at additional textures, and how to mix them to compelling effect.

Session Topics: Action, Thought, Dialogue Vs Description, Dialogue Description, Pace, Mixing Together.

[H4] Week Eight

[H3] Middles

The halfway point of the course (and hopefully in your writing journey as well). We’ll spend this week studying the challenges of writing effective middles, stress testing your narratives so far and thinking ahead to the second half.

Session Topics: Soggy Middles, The Midpoint, Wants and Needs, Links, Thinking Forwards.

[H4] Week Nine

[H3] Writing Skills

We begin the second half of the course with a fortnight’s focus on writing skills and techniques. We’ll start by taking your writing back to basics, and exploring some of the tools at your fingertips.

Session Topics: Words, Verbs, Sounds, Sentences, Paragraphs.

[H4] Week Ten

[H3] Writing Techniques

In this second week of writing skills, we focus in on some key techniques for emphasis, and how you can make the most of the most important moments in your book.

Session Topics: Rule of Three, Repetition, Build, Contrast, Imagery.

[H4] Week Eleven

[H3] Chapters

Chapters and chapter structure give shape to your story and create signposts for your reader. This week, we’ll look at how you make the most of these building blocks, from beginnings and ends to chapter lengths and pacing.

Session Topics: Chapters Overview, Beginnings and Ends, Lengths, Chapter Structure, Pulling Together.

[H4] Week Twelve

[H3] Plot Skills 2

A second full plot week where we focus in on some further skills to boost your writing.

Session Topics: Foreshadowing, Group Scenes, Dovetailing, Time, Punctuating a Scene.

[H4] Week Thirteen

[H3] Doubling Up

This week we’ll look at making your writing work twice as hard, delivering on not just one element, but two at the same time.

Session Topics: Action and Story, Action and Character, Description and Story, Description and Character, Dialogue and Story.

[H4] Week Fourteen

[H3] Endings

In the final full week of the course, it’s all about thinking about your endings. How do you finish your story in a way that leaves the reader fully satisfied?

Session Topics: Resolution, Bookending, Imagery, Movement, Possibility.

[H4] Week Fifteen

[H3] Next Steps

As we approach the end of our 101 days together, we’ll think about the next steps to take with your first draft. How do you go about editing? What’s next?

Session Topics: Editing Plan, Editing, The End.

[H2]
Frequently asked questions

[H4] Who should take this course?

This course is appropriate for writers of all levels and backgrounds. Whatever your previous experience and whatever genre you are writing in, it can help you finish your novel.

[H4] How does the course work?

The course gives you time to learn and time to write. The course is taught through a combination of daily video-led lessons and writing exercises, weekly live sessions, and a vibrant online community where you can discuss your work with other writers. As soon as you sign up, you’ll have access to video lessons to complete on your own timeline. Each Monday, there will also be a live masterclass taught by professor Noah Charney or a guest speaker.

[H4] What does the course cover?

In short, everything you need to know to write a novel. The themed weeks focus in-depth on the following topics: Preparation, Beginnings, Secret Sauce, Character, Plot Skills, Description, Dialogue, Texture, Middles, Writing Skills, Writing Techniques, Chapters, Plot Skills II, Doubling Up, Endings, and Next Steps.

[H4] How long is the course?

The course lasts for 101 days — that’s fourteen and a half weeks. Upon enrolling, you’ll also access five bonus sessions that will help you get ready to write. Although the course is designed as a three-month course, you may choose to complete it on your own timeline.

[H4] What do the lessons look like?

Each themed topic is divided into five sessions, and we recommend studying one topic per week. Each weekday, you’ll get a new video lesson on a specific writing topic, along with optional reading and exercises. On Saturdays, you’ll get further videos with our panel of guest writers; some reinforce the week’s writing theme, while others cover the challenges of writing more generally.

[H4] How long will each session lesson take?

Each video master class is 10-15 minutes long, so you can complete your lessons and start writing in as little as 90 minutes per week. If you’d rather take a deep dive, completing the optional readings and exercises will take an additional 45 minutes (totaling one hour of study per weekday session).

[H4] How much writing do I need to do each day?

To write a 75,000-word manuscript in three months, you’ll need to write around 5,000 words a week. If you’re a regular writer, that’s 1000 words a day, Monday to Friday. You may be more of a weekend writer and do all your work there instead. You may also choose to spread the learning and writing over more than three months. It’s worth saying too that over the course of the novel, your weekly word count may well change: some writing weeks may be more productive than others, so these numbers are an average to aim for. And of course, your novel might end up longer than 75,000 words! We’ll give you a word count calculator so you can update how much you’ve written and how far you have left to go.

[H4] How much time should I set aside per week to complete the course properly?

It’s up to you how much time you spend on the course. To complete it in three months, expect to spend 10-15 hours per week on course materials (depending on whether you plan to complete the optional readings). If you want to write at a more relaxed pace, you have complete flexibility.

[H4] How long will I have access to the teaching material?

You’ll have access to all video lessons indefinitely, and you can access the community forum, live masterclasses, and conferences for 12 months from the day you start the course. At the end of the year, you’ll have the option to renew your membership for continued access to all our live events and recordings.

[H4] How do the live sessions work?

Each week, usually on a Monday, there will be a live masterclass to be studied alongside the video lessons. These include a mixture of interviews with guest authors, further deep dives on various craft topics, and live editing sessions. All live sessions will be recorded, so you’ll be able to watch any that you miss.

[H4] How does feedback work?

While there are no formal feedback sessions available through the course, you are more than welcome to exchange feedback with other students. You can request critique partners and exchange feedback in the community hub, and we’ll provide instructions for

Your Diagnosis

Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.

Information Density 0 / 30
Read the Narrative & headings: do hard facts (prices, dates, numbers) outweigh fluff power-words?
Semantic Coherence 0 / 20
Compare the homepage promise against the sub-page reality. Do they hold the same line?
Trust & Proof 0 / 20
Weigh review mentions against actual external proof links. Claims without verification = theatre.
Commodity Fingerprint 0 / 15
Check headings & narrative against the industry clichés in the setup above.
Identity & Authority 0 / 15
Inspect the schema: is there real Organization/Person identity with sameAs links, or gaps?
Your predicted BS score 0 / 100
💡 Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)

These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.

Information Density

Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.

Semantic Alignment

Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.

Trust & Proof

Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.

Commodity Fingerprint

Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.

Identity & Authority

Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.

Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

Implement Organization and Course schema to technically validate the authority of the listed instructors. Add outbound links to third-party review aggregators (e.g., Trustpilot) on the Learning page to resolve the trust theatre flag. Include ‘Last Updated’ timestamps on the course syllabus to ensure content recency for prospective students. Replace the ‘Millions of authors’ claim with a live counter or more specific figure to eliminate the last vestiges of generic marketing cliches.

Reedsy aligns perfectly with the Media and Publishing category, specifically targeting the self-publishing and editorial service sectors. The content focuses on book production, manuscript development, and author education, validating its placement in the publishing ecosystem.

“The score of 10 is driven by a near-total absence of semantic drift and high information density. The only penalties incurred were for minor technical authority gaps (missing schema) and the 'Trust Theatre' flag on the learning page due to unlinked reviews.”
