Norman's condition worsened but the relentless continuation of care has been first class. Diagnosis SPOT on. People need to stop moaning about vet costs - Norman has received focused advice from x2 highly qualified vets and amazing support vet nurses and admin staff - brilliant practice. If you live anywhere near Knutsford (even if not that close - Im in Manchester) then switching your pet(s) to the care of Paul, Charlie, Nick, Stefan, Rachel, Holly and the top nurse and admin support team will be the best move you ever make. It’s something that no pet owner ever wants to use, but if your pet goes missing a microchip is the only way to ensure that your pet is permanently identifiable if they get lost. It means that if your animal is found whilst missing, you’ll be contacted by a vet or animal shelter when it’s found and handed in. It’s also now a legal requirement that every dog in the UK is microchipped from eight weeks of age and from June 10th 2024 cats before they reach the age of 20 weeks.Although it may seem unpleasant to insert a small chip under your pet’s skin, microchipping is a relatively routine procedure and one that we offer here at Knutsford Veterinary Surgery. We routinely chip cats, dogs and rabbits. [H2] What is the procedure for microchipping?

Microchip implantation is a very quick procedure that can be performed in a consultation. Using a special implant device a needle is inserted under the skin and the chip, which is smaller than a grain of rice, is implanted. We use the smallest microchips on the market.Once the initial procedure is completed, your pet won’t even notice the microchip and it will be out of reach to stop them scratching or pawing at it. If your pet is easily stressed, we can carry out the implantation whilst your pet is under anaesthetic for another procedure such as dog or cat neutering.

[H4] How does microchipping stop me losing my animal?

It doesn’t matter how good a pet owner you are, your animal may run off or wander too far from time to time. By having a microchip you know that even if your animal doesn’t return, it will find its way back to you if it’s handed into a vet or animal shelter. The vet can scan your animal’s microchip to find its unique serial number. Using this they can find your contact details from the database.

[H4] What happens if I don’t get my dog or cat microchipped?

Since April 2016 it’s been the law that all dogs in the UK are microchipped and registered on an approved database. On June 10th 2024 the law will come into place for cats also, making it mandatory to microchip your cat. This means that their owner’s name and address can be traced if your dog or cat runs away or is stolen. By law, any dogs or cats which are not microchipped can lead to their owners paying a £500 fine – for such a small procedure, is it really worth the risk?

[H4] Is a collar just as effective as microchipping?

It’s still useful for pet owners to add their contact details to their pet’s collar. This way members of the public can contact you without going to a vet. However, if your cat or dog loses their collar, then a microchip is important as a last resort. If your animal is stolen a collar can also easily be removed, but a microchip is the only certain way to prove that an animal is yours.

We ultimately treat your pets as if they were our own.We feel that delivering a timely diagnosis allows treatment to be started sooner, getting your pets back on their paws earlier.  Over the years we have always ensured our facilities are state-of-the-art to provide the highest standards of care,  we combine highly skilled, experienced vets and nurses with comprehensive in-house laboratory, imaging and surgical capabilities.

Our vets have special interests in Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Dentistry and Surgery. We offer specialist-level surgeries including Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy (TPLO’s), corneal grafting and keyhole surgery.Our recently renovated surgery at Fryer’s Garden Centre, Knutsford has been further extended and enhanced with a pet-centred focus to increase space and reduce proximity to other patients.  The waiting room is flooded with natural light and there are two quiet cat pods for cats to relax in while they wait for their appointment.  We are blessed with a large free carpark to remove the hassle and strain from any visit. You also have the opportunity to grab a coffee and listen to some music while you wait. Tell us a bit about you
Hi I’m Paul Adams. I’m the Clinical Director and Owner of Knutsford Veterinary Surgery. I opened the surgery in 2014 with my wife Charlie and have enjoyed serving pets in Knutsford and across North East Cheshire ever since. In 2007 I qualified from The Royal Veterinary College (RVC), The University of London before completing a Rotating Internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the RVC’s Queen Mother Hospital for Animals a year later. Working with a range of different specialists has proven invaluable when dealing with Knutsford’s sickest and most complicated patients. I developed a passion for ophthalmology (eyes) and achieved a post-grad certificate in 2011, becoming an advanced ophthalmology practitioner in 2023. I finds eyes fascinating as they are the only organ you can look inside, they tell you so much about what is happening in the rest of the body and perfectly blend the disciplines of medicine, diagnostics, and surgery.
What further qualifications do you have?
I completed my Postgraduate Certificate in Small Animal Ophthalmology in 2011 and also hold the BSAVA Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice in Ophthalmology.  You can explore more here at our Ophthalmology Hub.
What’s your favourite part of being a Vet?
My favourite part of being a Vet is consulting and establishing life-long bonds with owners and pets alike.
Can you describe your typical day?
No two days are the same and the Knutsford team undertakes a whole range of medical and surgical procedures in our fully-equipped surgery. After the morning team meeting, my daily duties include consultations or operations until mid-afternoon, then catching up with paperwork and enquiries before some more consulting.
Do you have any pets?
I have two lovely Labrador Retrievers called Fen and Summer (both have allergic skin disease!)
What do you do to relax?
Outside of work, I enjoy walking the dogs, DIY and woodwork, cycling, walking with friends & family, and drinking coffee (and the occasional glass of wine).

My favourite song is ‘Clocks’ by Coldplay

It’s got to be Forrest Gump.
Most unusual animal treated
I’ve had the pleasure of treating a Silverback Gorilla, 2 cheetahs and a litter of white lion cubs.
