[H3] Don’t force an indoor dog outdoors
Some people prefer a four-star hotel to sleeping on the ground floor of a tent and dogs are the same way. While one pooch might love nothing more than the freedom of an open trail and a camping weekend, other dogs prefer a comfortable night inside their air-conditioned home. While you want man’s best friend by your side all the time, it may be in your pet’s best interest to leave him behind. You know your pup’s personality best and can decide whether or not your dog would enjoy a camping trip with you.
[H3] Gear up
Once you’ve decided your pet will enjoy a night under the stars, gather the necessary items to make your trip a breeze. ID tags are an essential (even if your pooch is microchipped). It’ a good idea to bring a back-up collar in case your dog’s breaks and multiple leash options. You’ll want a leash suitable for trails, and another longer tether that will come in handy when hanging around the campsite. Make sure he’s got food and water dishes. Pack a dehydrated raw dog food, like Sojos for your trip. It’s lightweight for travel and easily rehydrates into a complete meal for your pup. Camping typically means plenty of down-time to ponder your thoughts. And while you may enjoy this tranquility, your pooch could get bored. Bring entertainment—like toys and bones to ensure your pup isn’t getting into mischief while you’re sitting around the campfire.

Depending on where you set up camp, you may encounter wildlife from mountain lions and bears to rattle snakes or coyotes. Be mindful of your surroundings and never let your pooch out of site. It can be tempting to allow your dog to run free, especially in remote areas, but he can get into all kinds of trouble. You don’t want to cut your trip short because a skunk sprayed your dog and a porcupine attack is extremely painful. Check regularly for wood ticks as well, as your pup is likely exposed to them on a camping trip.

There are many biodegradable options to use while on the go. Reusing plastic bags may seem good enough, but these types of plastics take up to a thousand years to disintegrate in a landfill.
[H3] Consider composting
Keep in mind that Fido’s waste contains nutrients, bacteria and parasites that can be harmful to humans, but you can safely compost it. Use a separate bin buried far from your garden and water source. Read the USDA’s recommendations on pet composting here.

Your septic and sewer system is designed to safely process and transfer waste, so why not flush your pet’s waste too? Use something biodegradable like a paper towel or flushable bags.

While a Bernese mountain dog might revel in the opportunity to frolic in the snow, a whippet won’t want to linger outside in the cold any longer than he needs to. A dog’s sensitivity to cold can lead to behavioral problems, too. If your pet feels too uncomfortable to spend the time needed to potty outside, he might opt to do it inside.
Ensuring that your dog is comfortable, both for his own sake and yours, should be a top priority. Here are a few ideas to make the coldest months of the year more enjoyable for everyone:
[H3] Outerwear:
Don’t let the naysayers tease you about having a coat and booties for your dog! Keeping him warm and happy, rather than stylish, is the name of the game with winter gear for dogs. All kinds of coat options are available, from water-shedding materials to thick, cozy fleece, or even combinations of both. Pick what matches your lifestyle. If your dog’s coat just going to be used for quick potty outings, there’s less need to worry about water-repellency. If you go for long walks or hikes, you might want something a little more durable. Booties are another essential, and they’ll help to protect your dog’s pads, which can crack and peel painfully with exposure to cold conditions or salt.
[H3] Around the house:
Make his bed a little more enticing by adding an extra blanket. If certain rooms in your house have cold floors, put an extra bed down so that your pup can be with you, without having to get cold from lying on the floor. Some heat-loving breeds might even appreciate curling up next to a hot water bottle filled with hot water. “Jammies” for dogs can also make a real difference in comfort during the coldest days.
[H3] Adjust your behavior:
You might like extra-long walks or runs all year long, but if your dog is cold-sensitive, don’t make him do something that could cause him discomfort. Go for a short walk with him, then venture out longer on your own instead. If you have a yard, be sure to watch your dog carefully when he goes outside, to ensure that he does his “jobs.” If he doesn’t, revert back to basic house training methods – let him in to warm up in his crate, but send him outside again until the job gets done.
