I've been slowly dipping my toes back into headphones over the last month or so. I started out by setting up a Magni Unity and Modi 5 in my office at home, got my HD6XX and Elex back out, that lead to a lot of EQing, first by eye, then based on work from Oratory that I tuned by ear.

I think my overall disappointment with headphones has been understood over the last several years since I got into speakers in a meaningful way. I went to Canjam Dallas 2024, and basically everything there sounded pretty shit, you can see my impressions here. Headphones are just as a whole tuned pretty poorly in my opinion, and honestly, in many cases it only gets worse as you go up in price. So many just have not nearly enough bass and far too much treble, the overall tonal balance is just off.

Holy balls. Every few years, someone tips me off to a piece of gear that is truly special. The Pioneer M-22, Rockna Wavedream DAC and the DSHA-3F are prime examples. The Soulnote A-0 belongs in that same breath.
I had a strong use case for an integrated amp like the A-0 for various reasons:
SET vs PP vs Hybrid
I needed a "Goldilocks" amp. I wanted something for "normal" people - a single power button and a clean UI - that captures the essence of both worlds. This is it.

DC offset in AC mains has been discussed for years. Products exist on the market claiming to solve such issues. But how prevalent is it?
1) are there certain geographic locations more prone to DC offset?
2) does it vary by types of building construction?
3) Is a solar powered home more likely to have DC offset?
4) Are there types of appliances that cause DC offset?
There are many more possible questions but this is a start. Maybe it would be good to actually measure and find out. That is the motivation behind this project.
I have constructed a measurement system pictured above.

Schiit Vestri USB Dongle

So far the sound is very nice. Definitely Mesh headstage. Tonality is more like Modi Mesh (or Weiss DAC204) than Mimir, that is it's warmer than Mimir. When all things are clicking, proper synergies in place, doesn't even sound like it's an ESS.

Will also compare to the $10 Amazon dongle. Note: I don't care for most small-sized dongles. I don't think they sound any better than the $10 Amazon special.
INITIAL IMPRESSIONS AND POTENTIAL
Assuming the planets align, that is under the proper circumstances, I prefer Vestri over Magni Unity + card. The Vestri's sound is reminiscent of Weiss DAC204 reviewed here: https://superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/weiss-dac204-review-and-measurements.14405/
Actually, I think it's an improvement. We retain the warm tone and smooth highs of the Weiss, but now with Mesh added. The Mesh effect, specifically the Oberkomboburritofiltrierungshochleistungsapparatur headstage, isn’t as pronounced as on the Mimir; it’s a scaled‑down version, but listeners familiar with that headstage will definitely recognize it.

Best Amps for HD800S - 2026 Edition UPDATED

BACKGROUND - WHERE I AM COMING FROM
I only like the HD800S under certain conditions. The frequency response of the HD800S, despite the Armin Zola resonator (that lessens the 6kHz peak) is still bit too screwy for my tastes. I find that EQ doesn’t work well for the HD800S because its screwy frequency response is caused by super early reflections from how the driver is suspended and angled in front of the ear and by the large ribs and mounting structures of the cups. The treble is hot, the mids are recessed, and the lows are a bit cloudy (the HD800S took a slight step back in the lows), especially compared to the awesome low-distortion planars available today.
This guide should still be applicable to those with the OG HD800 with mods (BTA, Sandevistan, Superdupont, etc.)
As far as amping, tube amps are recommended, but solid-state amps are definitely getting there. What we are looking for is one or more of the following traits:
Wetness or bloom (the HD800S can be on the dry side)
Smooth highs (to counter the hot and grainy HD800S highs)
Commits few sins of omission, capable of rendering microdynamics and microdynamics (the HD800S is super resolving, subpar gear and subpar recordings won't make the HD800S any more special than lesser headphones)
Capable of slam (the HD800S can hit like a truck with the right gear)
Also, tube amps which are overly warm, syrupy, slow, or romantic (cathode follower OTL designs, OPT with cheap output transformers, Chi-Fi push-pull cathode bias, etc.) will not be mentioned. They do cure the HD800s dry sound, but at too high of a price in terms of clarity, transient response, microdetail, microdynamics, etc. Personally, I think you are much better off with an HD650 and LCD-2 with a very technically and musically capable amp. If you like the romantic smoothed-over-to-shit kind of sound, best to seek advice somewhere else. Trying to make the HD800S into sounding like an LCD-2 is plain wrong. It's like trying to convert someone who is gay into being straight.

Schiit Lyr 5 Impressions

TL;DR. Both Lyr 5 and the Mjolnir 3 are great headphone amps. Lyr 5 is one of the best modern sounding amps, smaller, powerful, versatile, and fun, regardless of the price. Mjolnir 3 is a classic solid state class A balanced amp, authoritative, smooth, cohesive.
This is my first impression using the 6N8S tube included the package. I was jaw-dropping when I first set them up in the hotel, Laptop USB powered Mimir -> Lyr 5 -> HD650. The HD650-kiss mod came alive. I never truly liked the sound signature of HD650, even now, but this is the best sound that I heard from a pair of HD650 so far. I arrived home last night, compared Lyr 5 with the Mjolnir 3.
Setup. Local or stream Qobuz, P2AES coax to Gungnir OG/A2, home-brew Cinemag CMLI-15/15B XLR to SE converting box, SE inputs to either Mjolnir 3 or Lyr 5. Main head phone is Audeze LCD-X 2021. I haven’t owned any of the early iterations of Lyr. Only heard Lyr 3+ in a local schiit meet years ago.

ZMF Tessidera Review and Impressions

The ZMF Tessidera. Initial impressions with the Caldera pads: full bodied, punchy bass, notable clarity, extended evident highs, with a wet tube-like euphony. Tonal signature is somewhat reminiscent of the LFF Paradox*, except much better technicalities. The Tessidera sounds low distortion (the clarity - maybe even better than Caldera) and kicks a decent bit...

I heard Violectric’s new V324 at an audio show several months back. I liked the sound right away. It was what I think of as the “Violectric house sound” – powerful, slightly warm, with strong bass, realistic weight in the lower registers, tuneful, flowing midrange and treble, strong dynamics, and a pleasing reproduction of the spatial qualities of recorded music. Recently I got my hands on a loaner V324, which will be the subject of this review.

Several manufacturers have pushed boundaries in performance when developing their statement components. Some have then endeavored to apply what they have learned to lower end models in their respective lines often narrowing the gap in both measurement performance and listening enjoyment between high and lower cost products. Schiit’s Mimir F is an excellent example of this trend offering impressive measurement performance but more importantly consistently enjoyable listening experiences.

A staple of electronic design is one or more lab bench power supplies. There are many available from very inexpensive to uber expensive. The lower price range is dominated by SMPS while higher end models are often linear designs. Datasheet specifications vary considerably in the information disclosed. Noise specifications are at best a numeric ripple & noise value. Nowhere to be found are noise spectrums. This comparison will address that for the selected power supplies.

B&K Precision 1730A
Keysight U8001A
Left to right (on top of U8001A) SMPS type:

Kiprim DC310S
BK 1730A is a full on old school analog linear bench supply. Analog meters. All passive cooling, no fan, no acoustic noise.
DC310S has the greatest number of display features including ability to track voltage or current over time which makes it very useful for educational purposes.
