Our story

[H2] From a standing start

When six founding partners, led by Claude Dauphin, established Trafigura in 1993, it was from a standing start. The initial acquisition of a metals warehouse in Peru a year later came at the beginning of a story that over the following three decades has seen Trafigura grow into a global market leader in the commodities industry.

Our story

Close

[H2] What’s in a name?

Change and transformation has always been at the heart of what we do.
This is reflected in the name Trafigura, which was purchased from an existing company registered in Amsterdam and picked because it brought to mind the word ‘transformation’.

Our story

Close

[H2] Our business today

Today, Trafigura is one of the world’s leading suppliers of metals and minerals, oil and petroleum products, and gas and power, with investments in lower-carbon solutions for the future.
We employ approximately 14,500 employees and have developed a global network of logistics, assets and offices that support our business. Our global customer base relies on us to help secure access to critical resources in an increasingly complex world.

Our story

[H2] Developing new markets

Change is the one constant in our business and we continue to expand the scope of our activities helping to develop new markets in:
Liquefied natural gas
Carbon removal credits
Hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels
Renewable energy

Our story

[H2] Acting responsibly

We make it our mission to work responsibly and to make the supply of energy and commodities more efficient, secure and sustainable.
This includes working in partnership with others to drive decarbonisation, improve environmental and social standards and respect human rights across commodity value chains.

[H2] Looking to the future

The platform we have built over the past 30 years, from energy to metals to carbon and lower-carbon solutions, means we are uniquely placed to meet the challenges that lie ahead. Whether that’s helping the world transition to a low carbon future or providing the critical commodities required to meet future needs, Trafigura will remain at the heart of global supply.

Your Diagnosis

Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.

Information Density 0 / 30
Read the Narrative & headings: do hard facts (prices, dates, numbers) outweigh fluff power-words?
Semantic Coherence 0 / 20
Compare the homepage promise against the sub-page reality. Do they hold the same line?
Trust & Proof 0 / 20
Weigh review mentions against actual external proof links. Claims without verification = theatre.
Commodity Fingerprint 0 / 15
Check headings & narrative against the industry clichés in the setup above.
Identity & Authority 0 / 15
Inspect the schema: is there real Organization/Person identity with sameAs links, or gaps?

💡 Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)

These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.

Information Density

Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.

Semantic Alignment

Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.

Trust & Proof

Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.

Commodity Fingerprint

Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.

Identity & Authority

Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.

Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

18 BS / 100

Trafigura is a rare example of a corporate site where the substance significantly outweighs the signal. Its BS score is almost entirely composed of technical metadata flags rather than content-based deception. It is an objective portal of record for a global commodities powerhouse.

To achieve a minimal BS score below 10, the technical team should remove placeholder review/rating schema from the metadata that triggers trust theatre flags. Integrate named leadership and featured employees into the structured data using Person schema to eliminate authority gaps. Convert high-level H1 and H2 marketing headings into more descriptive, evidence-based titles. Finally, link the responsible sourcing claims to more granular technical audit protocols rather than summarized mission statements.

The content confirms Trafigura is a massive player in the Wholesale, B2B Trade & Distribution industry, specifically focusing on global commodity trading and logistics. Every page provides specific details regarding the movement of oil, metals, gas, and power, which aligns perfectly with the provided industry pattern dictionary.

“The score of 18 was primarily driven by technical trust theatre flags and concept repetition regarding the firm's size. The site's absolute transparency regarding physical locations (50+ addresses provided) and financial metrics prevents any high-level BS detection. It is one of the most substantial B2B sites analyzed, with recent evidence dated within weeks of the system anchor date.”
