[H2] L’IRLANDE POUR ORIGINE Ce n’est pas le hasard qui pousse Bernard O’Phelan (1770-1841), jeune irlandais négociant en vins, à quitter sa ville natale de Tipperary à la fin du XVIIIe siècle pour s’installer à Bordeaux. La ville est à cette époque un important carrefour commercial avec les îles britanniques. LA PASSION DU VIN D’étroites relations se sont nouées parmi les familles qui négocient entre elles les vins de la région. Ces liens sont tels qu’ils débouchent sur des alliances, voire des mariages et notamment celui de Bernard Phélan avec l’une des filles de Daniel Guestier, négociant bien connu de la Place. Epaulé par l’expérience de son beau-père, il peut désormais envisager de produire ses propres vins. En 1805, il acquiert le Clos de Garramey, situé à Saint-Estèphe, puis en 1810 le domaine Ségur de Cabanac. Les origines du domaine remontent donc au milieu du XVIIIe siècle.
