Its contoured profile, unique twin boulder design and approach promenade enhances urban function, opens access to the riverside and dock areas and creates a new dialogue with the emerging town. The Guangzhou Opera House is a structure that rises and falls at the foot of Zhujiang Boulevard, confirming Guangzhou as one of Asia’s cultural centres. Bringing together two adjacent sites for the proposed Museum and metropolitan activities, it forms an adjunct to the Haixinsha Tourist Park Island and a dominant riverside focus for visitors. Viewed from the park at the centre of Zhujiang Boulevard, the Opera House creates a visual prelude to the Tourist Park Island beyond. Viewed from the river, the towers of Zhujiang New Town provide a dramatic backdrop to the Opera House and offer a unified vision of the setting’s civic and cultural buildings. An approach promenade is cut into the landscape – an internal street beginning at the proposed Museum site at the opposite side of the central boulevard and leading to the Opera House. To one side of this promenade, a cafe, bar, restaurant and retail facilities are embedded shell-like into the landforms. Visitors arriving by car or bus are set down at a ‘drop-off’ point on the north side of the site on Huajiu Road, while service vehicles access the Opera House and Theatre Buildings at either end of the same road. VIP access to the Opera House is from the western boundary, facing Huaxia Road. [H1] Zaha Hadid Architects Related Projects Archive Search Studio Your Starred Items [H1] Architecture [H1] BMW Central Building Leipzig, Germany 2001 – 2005 BMW AG Built 25000m2 Our Central Building for BMW constituted a radical reinterpretation of the traditional office – transforming the building and the functions it contains into a more dynamic, engaging ‘nerve-centre’ or ‘communication knot’ – funneling all movement around the manufacturing complex through a space that transcends conventional white collar/blue collar spatial divisions. Ground Floor Plan First Floor Plan Play Video BMW Central Building © Zaha Hadid Architects Play Video BMW Central Building © CNN Play Video BMW Central Building © Zaha Hadid Architects BMW’s bold objective was to translate functional industrial architecture into a new ‘aesthetic’ – to use the new Central Building at its Leipzig manufacturing centre as a transition zone between manufacturing halls and public spaces, from which all the complex’s activities gathered and branched out. We conceived the Central Building, positioned between other existing or planned structures, as an orientating and animating force field, a compression chamber through which all movement converged, from the cycles and trajectories of workers to the production line itself, which traversed this central point. Within the building, following a primary ‘scissor-section’ strategy, two sequences of terraced plates step up like giant staircases from north to south and from south to north, creating a continuous connection. One cascade begins close to the public lobby overlooking the forum to reach the first floor in the middle of the building. The second starts with the cafeteria at the south end, moving up to meet the first cascade then all the way up to the space projecting over the entrance. At the bottom of the void between the floors is the auditing area – a central focus of attention. Above the void, half-finished cars are open to view moving along their tracks between the surrounding production units. In stark contrast to conventional, functionally-exclusive offices, employees are integrated through transparent internal organisation that mixes functions and traditional status groups, from engineering to administrative, white collar to blue collar – preventing the establishment of exclusive domains. A large car park is transformed into a dynamic spectacle in its own right, showcasing the lively, sparkling, moving field of car bodies in the arrangement of parking lots. Here, cars swoop underneath and set visitors down as they are greeted by views through the glazed public lobby, deep into the building. [H1] Zaha Hadid Architects Archive Search Studio Your Starred Items [H1] Architecture [H1] Maggie's Fife Cancer Centre Kircaldy, Fife, Scotland 2001 – 2006 Maggie's Cancer Care Centres Built 250m2 Domestic in scale but unique in execution, Maggie’s Fife Cancer Centre is set on the edge of a hollow adjacent to Victoria Hospital: a distinctive protected environment providing a haven for cancer patients. Designed to create a transition between the natural and the man-made, it forms a gateway to the surrounding landscape. Elevations ZHA’s first built work in the UK, Maggie’s Fife Cancer Centre is a single storey construction which forms a continuation of the existing tree line that surrounds the natural hollow, with its dramatic topography. Using various study models, we explored how the edge of the hollow could transform into a building envelope. Externally, the Centre derives from a folding surface which moves visitors into a different space from the rest of the hospital grounds, a directional emphasis reinforced by the visible roof and two opposing walls clad with the same material and the translucent and clear glass mix of the remaining elevations. The Centre sits on a concrete plinth which connects it to the landscape. The strong directional language and material contrast of this plinth with the tarmac of the car park clearly define the entrance for new visitors. Large roof overhangs are used to extend the building into the landscape and protect the entrance doors on the north side, whilst providing solar shading to the glass elevation and partially covering the terrace on the south side. Internally, rooms are arranged around the design of an open plan kitchen with offices on the north elevation adjacent to the entrance. For privacy, rooms to the east have a semi-opaque façade and visitors can enjoy an unobstructed view through the Centre to the south-facing glass elevation to the hidden natural landscape of the hollow. The internal central kitchen space is kept open and column-free with a ramp connecting it to the flexi-hall and a system of pivoting doors separating it from the rest of the Centre. Designed to create a relaxed, homely and inspiring atmosphere for additional care and counselling outside the more clinical hospital environment, Maggie’s Fife Cancer Centre supports 1,700 Fife-based residents who are diagnosed with cancer every year. Elevation Play Video JS Bach Chamber Music Hall © Zaha Hadid Architects Commissioned to create a unique chamber music hall to house solo performance of J S Bach, we produced a design which Zaha Hadid believes: ‘enhances the multiplicity of Bach’s work through a coherent integration of formal and structural logic’. Our design utilizes a single continuous ribbon of fabric which swirls around itself, continually stretching, compressing and moving through the containing space to cocoon both performers and audience within an intimate, fluid space. In realizing our design a number of architectural challenges required resolution – most pertinently, scale, structure and acoustics – in order to retain the hall’s functional integrity. Once resolved, we were free to use the ribbon device to make circulatory and visual connections which constantly surprise and reveal new spaces. In situ it became both an ‘object floating in space’ and a place to ‘enter, inhabit and explore.’ The ribbon itself was made from translucent fabric membrane – capable of being compressed to the thickness of a handrail or stretched to enclose the full height of the hall. Whilst its surface undulated and changed rhythm constantly, the whole was articulated using an internal steel structure suspended from the ceiling. Clear unobtrusive, acrylic acoustic panels were suspended above the stage to reflect and disperse sound; programmed lighting and dispersed musical recordings ‘animated’ the ribbon outside of performance times. The whole installation was designed to be transportable and fit for reuse in other venues – offering a unique way to enhance acoustics while also defining a stage, intimate enclosure and passageways. [H1] Zaha Hadid Architects Related Projects Archive Search Studio Your Starred Items [H1] Design [H1] Hotel Puerta America Madrid, Spain 2003 – 2005 Grupo Urvasco Complete 1200m2 A new language of domestic architecture; a new dialogue between the complex, continuous nature of merging forms and textures. A dynamic project to design the 30-room floor of a hotel, driven by new developments in digital design and enhanced manufacturing capabilities. A fluid space, a seamless experience; pushing the boundaries of spatial concepts. Hotel Puerta America allowed us full autonomy to design a floor of its property, comprising 30 rooms and all common parts. Our masterstroke, in response to clichéd hotel rooms, was to explore the fusion of elements, forms and textures, where floors, walls and furniture become one continuous surface; one seamless skin. Every single element merges and flows, from bedroom doors with LED lights, bathtubs and vanity units to beds, shelves and chairs. Even a cantilevered bench by the window of each room, which doubles up as a table, follows the same graceful form, rounded in single curved sweep. Colour also becomes a unique element of the design scheme, where guests can opt for an alpine white or black bedroom, or choose their own combination:white bedroom, black bathroom; black bedroom, white bathroom; or black bedroom and a signature orange bathroom.
