About Games Studios Edmonton Austin Careers Blog Digital Media Gear Store [H2] Creating Worlds of Adventure, Conflict, and Companionship that Inspire You to Become the Hero of Your Story. BioWare develops high-quality console, PC, and online role-playing games focused on rich stories, unforgettable characters, and vast worlds to discover. Since 1995, BioWare has created some of the world's most critically acclaimed video games, including Baldur's Gate™, Neverwinter Nights™, Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™, Jade Empire™, Mass Effect™, and Dragon Age™. In 2008, BioWare was acquired by Electronic Arts, a leading global interactive entertainment publisher. BioWare operates in Edmonton (Alberta, Canada), and Austin (Texas, United States). Currently announced projects at BioWare include Dragon Age™: The Veilguard, the next installment of our epic RPG franchise whose last entry earned Game of the Year accolades in 2014. We are also working on the next Mass Effect™ game, one of the highest rated video game franchises of all time. [H2] Deep within a western Canadian province known for big skies, majestic mountains, and golden fields, BioWare was born. A true Canadian success story, BioWare's humble beginnings make its achievements all the more remarkable. The unlikely merging of medicine and computer games as impetus for a start-up company is not as strange as you might think. Drs. Greg Zeschuk, Ray Muzyka, and Augustine Yip may have met in medical school, but it was their shared love of computer games, animation, and comics that cemented their future partnership. Prior to founding BioWare, they estimate that, between the three of them, they played every computer game ever made. Not as easy to do as you would think, considering they had medical school to attend to. Ray and Greg started programming medical education software for the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine in 1994 during their residency in family medicine. Augustine brought his artistic chops to the partnership shortly thereafter. The trio’s first project, the Acid-Base Simulator, was completed while they were still in residency. After graduation, Ray and Greg were appointed Research Associates in the Division of Studies in Medical Education. Their second and final medical project, the Gastroenterology Patient Simulator, was completed in 1995. Not quite content to sit on their stethoscopes, the trio realized that their need to express themselves creatively was pulling them in a different direction. They hooked up with a talented group of game programmers and artists, and BioWare Corp. became a reality on February 1, 1995 in a small room in Greg’s basement. BioWare’s first big commercial release was a mech-style game called Shattered Steel (October, 1996), which was developed with a Calgary subcontractor, Pyrotek Game Studios. Using a powerful graphics engine that created a reality not yet seen in video games, its demo garnered the attention of Interplay Productions, a computer game publisher headquartered in Irvine, California. Interplay saw potential in the talented and hardworking group of designers, artists, and programmers, and signed BioWare to a multi-game agreement. Since 1995, BioWare has created some of the world's most critically acclaimed video games, including Baldur's Gate™, Neverwinter Nights™, Star Wars ™: Knights of the Old Republic™, Jade Empire™, Mass Effect™ and Dragon Age™. In 2008, BioWare was acquired by Electronic Arts, a leading global interactive entertainment publisher. Your Diagnosis
Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.
Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)
These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.
Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.
Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.
Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.
Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.
Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.
Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.
Based on 1884 businesses audited.
BioWare has 5.5 points less BS than the average for Arts, Culture & Entertainment.
Arts, Culture & Entertainment BS: BioWare (bioware.com)
BioWare presents a rare case where the substance of its 30-year history successfully anchors its marketing fluff. While the site is structurally repetitive and technically behind on structured data, the forensic detail of its medical-school-to-basement-studio origin story provides a level of authenticity that most corporate entertainment sites cannot replicate. It is a legacy brand relying on established authority rather than modern trust theatre.
Integrate Organization and Person schema to formally link the studio and its lead developers to their global industry footprints. Update the About page with performance metrics or awards from the last 36 months to bridge the 12-year gap since the 2014 GOTY mention. Consolidate the mission statement repetition into a single high-impact section to reduce the commodity language score. Add external proof paths, such as links to official award databases or third-party critical reviews, to substantiate claims of being highly rated.
The website strongly aligns with the Arts, Culture & Entertainment category, specifically within interactive media. The content focuses heavily on experiential storytelling, immersive RPG development, and artistic vision, which are core components of the industry pattern dictionary.
“The score of 27 is primarily driven by the lack of structured data (Identity & Authority) and the extreme repetition of the mission statement (Information Density). The trust and proof score was slightly elevated due to the staleness of the 2014 evidence relative to the 2026 system date. The site remains in the Minimal BS category due to high specificity in its historical and logistical content.”
