See History In The Making

HMS Victory is entering one of the most important chapters in her conservation story.  As part of the £42m The Big Repair, Victory’s remaining masts and bowsprit have been carefully removed by our specialist team using a 750-tonne crane. It is the first time since the early 1890s that Nelson’s flagship has stood without all her masts.This is conservation on a scale few people will ever witness. And you can see it for yourself.HMS Victory remains open throughout the work, giving you the chance to step aboard, walk her decks and discover the story of Nelson, Trafalgar and the Royal Navy while her future is being secured around you.From summer 2026, new viewing points at the stern will open up fresh perspectives on the conservation work, bringing you closer to areas of the ship most visitors have never seen before.

At Royal Navy Museums: Hartlepool we have a large car park that is free for visitors to use.If you are travelling By CarFrom the northTake A19 southbound and exit at the A179. Follow the brown signs to the NMRN.When you reach the roundabout at the top of Maritime Avenue with a large buoy in the middle.Head for the masts of HMS Trincomalee. Take the second left then the next left again which will bring you to our car park.From the southTake A1M northbound and exit at junction 49 (A168/A19) signposted Teesside. Exit A19 at the A689 and follow the brown signs to the NMRN. Keeping going straight on at each set of lights and each roundabout. When you come to the lights at the junction between Victoria Road and Stockton Street, Wilkinsons is on your left, go straight ahead, past Asda and Boots and with Dunelm on your left, take the 4th exit at the roundabout. Head for the masts of HMS Trincomalee. Take the second left then the next left again which will bring you to our car park.The car park closes at 5pm in summer hours and 4pm in winter hours.  Please be aware that any cars left in the car park after this time are at risk of being locked in. Public Transport We are only a seven minute walk away from Hartlepool train station and the Hartlepool transport interchange. Royal Navy Museums: Hartlepool takes access to our on-site attractions seriously. When exploring the historic quayside, wheelchairs and pushchairs can access all external areas of the quayside.There are several toilets on site including disabled facilities and baby changing facilities. We also offer free parking on site including disabled parking. The gun deck is wheelchair accessible, though the top deck, mess deck, and hold are not.  Update on Ship Lift MaintenanceAs a centuries-old, internationally significant ship, maintaining HMS Trincomalee is a unique challenge. Our lifts are currently out of service. Unfortunately, due to the age of the equipment and difficulty in sourcing compatible parts.We are actively planning for their replacement as part of the ship's long-term conservation, but this major project doesn't have a confirmed date yet. Thank you for bearing with us—your visits, generous donations, and support are what make this vital care and conservation possible.Outdoor PlayshipWhile we strive for inclusivity throughout the outdoor playship, we acknowledge that some areas, due to their design or natural features, may present greater challenges for access. The Quayside Coffee ShopRelax and unwind in our Georgian-themed coffee shop nestled within the historic quayside with spectacular views of HMS Trincomalee.  Inside you can enjoy a variety of freshly made sandwiches, hot pasties and sausage rolls, delicious cakes and other tasty treats alongside a wide range of hot and cold drinks. Vegan and gluten free options are available daily, alongside our Jack Tar lunchboxes complete with colouring sheets for the younger sailors. We source our ice cream from Doddington Dairy, Northumberland. We are eager to stock local from other North East suppliers – if you are interested in supplying to our café, please contact us.Visitors are also welcome to bring their own picnic to enjoy in our outdoor picnic area.The cafe's opening hours are aligned with the museum's operating days. During Summer hours, we are open from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Our Winter hours are seasonally adjusted, so please contact us directly before your visit to confirm the schedule. [H4] Guidelines for visitors (2026)
To ensure all visitors have a safe and rewarding experience we have compiled these brief safety notes.All buildings and exhibits are assessed regularly and maintained to a high standard, as are equipment and procedures (e.g. fire evacuation). Due to the nature of our attractions, some hazards cannot be avoided but they can be mitigated. They all may have raised artefacts, sharp edges, electrical hazards, fire hazards, trip/fall/slip hazards and rusty/dusty artefacts. First aid trained staff are available at all sites. Please approach the nearest members of staff if any assistance is required or an emergency occurs.All front of house staff are trained in evacuation procedures; in the event of an emergency, please follow the instructions given by the staff and volunteers. Do not stop to collect your belongings. Please contact a member of staff if you need assistance. We have qualified First Aid staff available at all our sites. Please contact a member of staff if you need assistance.The General EnvironmentRoyal Navy Museums: Hartlepool includes a recreated historic quay. This includes some uneven surfaces and cobbled areas. Our exhibits are split over two floors across several different buildings and movement around site will include external routes.A paved path around the site allows for access and ensures wheelchairs and pushchairs can access all external areas of the quaysideSecond floor gallery spaces and displays are all connected with lift access. This includes our Fighting Ships exhibit and HMS Trincomalee Gallery.HMS Trincomalee is accessible over two gangways, one of which is equipped with a ramp to provide wheelchair access to the gun deck. There is currently no wheelchair access to the other decks.Toilets (including accessible toilets) are available at reception, in the café, under the HMS Trincomalee Gallery and near the outdoor play area. In addition, there is a Changing Place facility located within our car park, accessed using personal radar keys. A member of our team will be happy to direct toward appropriate facilities for your needs. We regularly carry out live cannon and musket firing displays onsite. These are located in a cobbled area near the main entrance. You can view these displays from beneath a canopy. The displays are loud and produce a lot of smoke, so may not be suitable for all audiences. We can provide ear defenders where required.Royal Navy Museums: Hartlepool is a free to access museum housing Hartlepool Borough Council collections. This is also accessed via our main entrance. It is over one floor, with flat and even flooring throughout.All staff will either be in uniform consisting of red museum branded shirts or coats, or in a period costume. They will be happy to assist with any issues or concerns.SecurityRoyal Navy Museums: Hartlepool is protected by 24 hour CCTV and overnight security. All visitors entering the museum are responsible for the conduct and health and safety of your group at all times. Although our staff are trained to take the highest care of your group, they are not legally responsible for them. The Captain’s Cabin on HMS Caroline

The Captain’s cabin was a private sanctuary, a place to think, a temporary relief from the burden of command. Complete with a desk, a bed and even a bathroom - luxuries that would have been unimaginable to the hundreds of men serving in his ship. On 31 May 1916, as HMS Caroline surged into the gathering chaos of the Battle of Jutland, Captain Henry Ralph Crooke had abandoned the comfort of his cabin and was on the Bridge .Every decision he made would ripple through the entire ship.

Royal Navy Museums: HMS Caroline is located at Alexandra Dock, Queens Rd, Belfast in the heart of Titanic Quarter. We are only 2.8 miles away from Belfast City Hall - 10-15 minutes by car. We offer free parking on site, including disabled parking.By public transport: Take the G2 Glider bus from Belfast City Hall to the first Catalyst Inc. stop. Walk through Catalyst car park to reach us at Alexandra Dock.  By car: Take the car and park in our free car park. We are only five minutes up Queens Road from SSE Arena, or a two minute drive from the Titanic Hotel. By Bicycle: Take advantage of the Belfast Bike scheme and enjoy a leisurely cycle up Maritime Mile.On foot: Royal Navy Museums: HMS Caroline is just a 30 minute walk from the iconic Big Fish in Belfast City Centre. Walk the Maritime Mile and see the Belfast Marina and the Great Light on your way.  A coach drop off point and coach parking facilities are available.

There are 8 tours scheduled throughout the day, from 10am until 3.15pm. Accessibility

Royal Navy Museums: HMS Caroline is a restored First World War ship that has been converted into a museum and visitor attraction. Due to the historic nature of the vessel, there are some accessibility considerations to be aware of when planning your visit. The ship is accessed via a ramp from the dockside. As the vessel is afloat, the gradient of the ramp changes due to the tidal nature of Belfast Lough; the ramp can be particularly steep at high tide.  There are steep steps and uneven surfaces on board. The majority of the ship is accessible for wheelchair users and our guided tour route has been designed with this mobility in mind.There are three lifts on board HMS Caroline:One external lift at the aft end of the ship, which provides access between the upper and lower decks.One internal lift in the café at the forward end of the ship, which provides access between the lower and upper decks.One external lift at the forward end of the ship, which provides access between the upper deck and the Fo’c’sle.Visitors should be aware that the Captain's Quarters and Engine Room are not accessible to pushchairs or wheelchairs, and due to the historic nature of this vessel the corridors on the ship are original and are narrow. If required, visitors can leave pushchairs in our drill hall at the beginning of your tour and collect these at the end.There are two accessible toilets on-board, next to the Drill Hall and Historic Galley. We have wheelchairs on site that may be borrowed free of charge. Light levels vary throughout the ship; there are also loud soundscapes and interactives on board. The Battle of Jutland film is loud, dark and contains images that may be upsetting to some visitors.

During the months spanning November to May, Royal Navy Museums: HMS Caroline adopts a guided tours model, hosting tours at 10am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, and 3pm. The Mess Deck Café at HMS Caroline is currently closed. HMS Caroline stocks a very basic range of cold drinks and snacks on board, these are available to purchase from the Museum Shop.Visitors are also welcome to bring their own snacks to enjoy at our on-site picnic area.

By carRoyal Navy Museums: Naval Aviation is located at Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Yeovilton - also known as HMS Heron. It is on the B3151 just off the A303 and A37. It is accessible from the M5 motorway, junction 25 at Taunton. If you are using a Sat Nav device, the postcode is BA22 8HW.Between the 20 November until 20 December, access to the B3151 is restricted between Plowage Lane and Zayn’s Bistro. The A303 Westbound Downhead (CamelCross) exit sliproad will be closed as part of the Sparkford to Ilchester improvement scheme. For visitors accessing the Museum, our advice is to come off the A303 via Podimore / Ilchester junction instead.By railThe Museum is accessible via rail and public transport: Visitors are advised to access mainline routes to Yeovil Pen Mill, Yeovil Junction or Castle Cary stations.By BikeThe museum has a dedicated bike rack

All Parking onsite is FREE and no advance booking is required. The Museum Ground Floor entrance is approx. 50m from the Car Park.EntranceBe aware that the site is a working Naval Air Station and certain areas may present difficulties to visitors who use wheelchairs, with a restricted mobility or who are visually impaired. Access to the Museum is either via a large staircase (situated around 40 metres from the car park) or via a pedestrian gate on the ground floor.AdmissionRegistered disabled visitors to the Museum should purchase an appropriate ticket according to their age. They are eligible to bring along a carer for free if required. Guidelines for visitors (2024)To ensure all visitors to Royal Navy Museums: Naval Aviation have a safe and rewarding experience we have compiled these brief safety notes.All buildings and exhibits are assessed regularly and maintained to a high standard, as are equipment and procedures (e.g. fire evacuation). Due to the nature of our attractions, some hazards cannot be avoided but they can be mitigated. They all may have raised artefacts, sharp edges, electrical hazards, fire hazards, trip/fall/slip hazards and rusty/dusty artefacts. First aid trained staff are available at all sites. Please approach the nearest members of staff if any assistance is required or an emergency occurs.All Front of house staff are trained in evacuation procedures; in the event of an emergency evacuation, please follow the instructions given by the staff and volunteers. Do not stop to collect your belongings. We have qualified First Aid staff available at all our sites. Please contact a member of staff if you need assistance.The General EnvironmentThe Royal Navy Museums: Naval Aviation is part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy and houses the historic Naval aircraft element of the Collection.The Royal Navy Museums: Naval Aviation welcomes all visitors. There are also regular services to and from Southampton Central with links to the South West and the West country. Portsmouth Harbour train station is only 200 yards from the entrance to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.By bus/coach:Many local and regional bus services stop at the Hard Interchange (adjacent to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard entrance). Accessibility

We welcome all visitors to the Dockyard and we have tried to make it as safe as possible. However, some of our attractions are historic buildings and ships, and we know that there can be challenges for some visitors. We have included information below to help you understand a bit more about the site, to help you plan in advance and to decide if you think that your visit will be impaired at all. For those who believe they will be limited in their visit or need extra support we do offer access free carer tickets and on-site additional support.Moving around our ships:Our ships may have been seaworthy for sailors, but they can be tricky to navigate for some. HMS Victory contains steep stairs, rope bannisters, low ceilings, narrow and low doorways, low light levels and uneven floors. It can also be slippery on the upper decks when wet.There is wheelchair access to Lower Gun Deck where a DVD tour runs, subject to availability and audio guides are available.HMS Warrior is accessed via a ramp. As she is still afloat the gradient can change with the tides and we would recommend entering at low tide if that is a concern, tide times can be accessed here.HMS Warrior also has steep stairs with rope bannisters, trip hazards, low ceilings, low lighting and can be slippery on a wet day. There is however and an accessible route marked on the deck plan and includes a fixed bannister staircase at the rear of the ship and a stairlift between the upper deck and the main gun deck (suitable for visitors who are able to transfer themselves to the stairlift). Wheelchairs must be left on the upper deck and a manual wheelchair is available for visitors to use on the main gun deck. Staff are on hand to help throughout the ship.Wheelchair access to the lower deck of HMS M.33 is currently is unavailable. However her upper deck stairs are more generously spaced, with guardrails throughout. There are some steep stairs in place and our Audio Visual Experience does not have subtitles and can be upsetting for some.We welcome families but the nature of our ship does mean that pushchairs are not permitted on board any of our ships.Accessing our museums and attractions:We have tried to make our museums and buildings as easy to move around as possible. However, there is always more we can do and they do still have some limitations as they are often based in historic buildings. This means floors can be uneven but are negotiable for wheelchairs and buggies.Galleries have a mixture of handling exhibits, film and audio displays and most have hearing loops. Audio transcripts or large print text is also available, just ask our staff.Harbour tours:You can combine your visit on land, with a trip out to sea on one of our Harbour Tours or taking a Waterbus to our Gosport sites.Two manual wheelchairs are available to borrow on the Harbour Tours service (depending on the vessel). Electric wheelchair users can switch to a manual wheelchair, which can be collected at our Visitor Centre. Pre-booking of those spaces can be arranged by calling 023 9283 9766 or Solent and Wightline Cruises on 01983 564602.Unfortunately, the Waterbus service to Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower and the Submarine Museum is not accessible for wheelchairs. Depending on the demand for spaces on board the vessel, it may be possible to take a folded manual wheelchair onto the vessel. There are a couple of large steps onto and off of the Waterbus. However, you can access those sites by car.Accessible toilets and facilities:Accessible toilets are available in the National Museum of the Royal Navy.We have manual wheelchairs available from our visitor centre, available on a first come first served basis. If you wish to book a manual wheelchair in advance of your visit, please email: portsmouthVEM@nmrn.org.uk or phone 02392 839 766. For mobility scooter hire, we recommend contacting Portsmouth Shopmobility direct. Please note, Portsmouth Shopmobility politely request at least 3 days’ notice is given for bookings to ensure availability for your planned visit. We have manual wheelchairs available from our visitor centre subject to availability, booking is recommended and this can be done via email portsmouthVEM@nmrn.org.uk or phone 02392 839 766 Ext:2083. for mobility scooter hire we recommend contacting Portsmouth Shopmobility at least 48 hours in advance of your visit.There are fifteen disabled spaces available in the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard car park, located in Admiralty Road approximately 400 metres from the dockyard entrance.We have a number of shops and cafes available on site offering hot and cold food and drink. The National Museum of the Royal Navy Shop, is accessible to wheelchair and pushchair users.Supporting you on site:Our staff are there to help make sure that every one of our visitors has a great day out so please do ask them if you require additional support. Whilst the military base does not allow animals on site, an exception is made for assistance animals and guide-dogs who are permitted in all areas.We also offer carer tickets free of charge if you would feel more comfortable bringing someone to support you and particularly recommend this for visually impaired visitors to help them negotiate some of the uneven flooring and difficult spaces.Legal statement:We do ask all of our visitors to take care when on site and to pay attention to the safety notices around our site. Bag Search:You may take a reasonably sized bag/rucksack into Portsmouth Historic Dockyard but a welcome host will need to search your bag at the point of entry. This process will also occur if you decide to leave the dockyard and re-enter on the same day.If an item is removed from your bag, it will be put into secure storage at the visitor centre. The pupil premium scheme is an initiative started by Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and supported by Portsmouth City Council to make the Dockyard more accessible for local families. If you are eligible but did not receive an email or letter, please contact your local school or Portsmouth City Council to find out why.You will receive 1 Portsmouth Historic Dockyard ticket valid for 2 adults and 3 children, which is valid for 1 year(from date of issue), and includes unlimited entry to all Portsmouth Historic Dockyard attractions.
