Industry Context — Common BS Fingerprints in Arts, Culture & Entertainment
Generic Claims: world-class entertainment, unforgettable experiences, something for everyone, inspiring audiences…
Red Flags: no specific upcoming events or programming, unnamed performers or artists, vague venue descriptions without capacity or location details, grandiose mission with no evidence of activity…
Semantic Drift Patterns: homepage claims cultural significance but events are corporate hire, positions as inclusive but pricing excludes most demographics, claims community focus but no community programming listed, artistic mission statement contradicted by purely commercial offerings…
Proof Expectations: specific past events with dates and attendance, named artists and performers with verifiable credits, press coverage with named publications, funding body acknowledgments with grant details…

This is just on the cusp of "maybe a too different kind of geeky for these parts," but I was enthralled, so maybe you will be, as well.

A video from YouTuber Kosmic shows how the discovery of a glitch in the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 2 by a casual player led to a search for a new hack in one of the most-understood bits of computer code: the original Super Mario Bros. for the original Nintendo Entertainment System.

The goal? Arbitrary code execution . . . also known as ACE – a cool-sounding acronym that means the ability to reprogram the game from within the game. Jumping immediately to the ending, changing on-screen text to whatever you want, giving the iconic jumping hero Mario strange new powers . . . All may be possible if you can figure out how to allow ACE.

Did the hex-editing gurus dissecting the odd crash succeed? Well, that's part of the fun of the video . . . . . . [more]

[H1] June 18, 2026: Looking For All Of The Above

Back in a previous millennium, All of the Above was the standout GURPS fanzine. Edited by Brett Slocum, AotA contained just what the title said. It was a good read.

Time has passed, and even Brett no longer has copies of every issue.

By any chance, do YOU have any? We'd happily work with photocopies if you don't want to give up originals. I would make sure that a complete run went to our friends at the Museum of Games Ireland, too.

Thanks!

[H1] June 17, 2026: Yarro Studios Speaks Out

If you follow crowdfunding news, the word "scam" may have passed through your mind when you read the headline.

That might not be the right word.

Now Yarro is free to speak out about what they went through, and I have to say, the scale of their abuse at the hands of a "fulfillment company" sounds even worse – if such a thing is possible! – than what Possum Creek Games suffered.

In their own words . . .

[H1] June 16, 2026: What Do You Do Besides GURPS?, Part II

In Part I, I revealed one thing I do that has no connection to working on or playing games: study and dance Argentine tango. I pointed out that when you look past tango's exaggerated romantic image, it's a surprisingly geeky pastime, perfect for a nerd like me. I also mentioned that I had another hobby about which you could say the same thing. Let's take a look at that.

I am an amateur mixologist, for definitions of "amateur" that encompass "my friends have declared me their barman at every party I've attended since 1996, and I have a sizeable cocktail laboratory in my apartment." The bar in question occupies an entire wall of my living room, not including the fridge and the tall shelf full of glassware, because those are against other walls. I've even tended bar for money at tango events – a minor side-gig that links two of my passions.

You might wonder what this has to do with the geeky . . . [more]

[H1] June 15, 2026: Adventure Awaits With Dungeon Fantasy: Naked Into The Void

Just when you thought it was safe for your Dunegon Fantasy Roleplaying Game adventurers . . . wait. Why would you think that?! It's never safe for Dungeon Fantasy RPG heroes! But even more so than normal, the intrepid crypt crawlers may find that their usual tricks – or even notions of "crypts" and "crawling" – don't work quite as expected, as they face the challenges of Dungeon Fantasy: Naked Into the Void.

This new adventure from Dungeon Fantasy RPG mastermind Sean Punch drops dungeon delvers into an unexpected environment, with the possibility of unique loot. Saying too much more would spoil the fun . . . but we will say there may be another clue or two in the title itself . . . Download your copy of Naked Into the Void today, only from Warehouse 23!

MidSouthCon 40

This is MSC 40. The last time I visited it was MSC 30. Time passes!
MSC is a great general con. Lots of SF/fantasy lit, but also lots of gaming. Writer GoH this year is Keith DeCandido – that will be fun!

October 24-27, 2024

Big Bad Con
Burlingame, CA

This is my first visit to BBC. Big Bad Con is a tabletop and live action gaming event. It focuses on a welcome to marginalized genders, queer folks, people of color, and people with disabilities. They actively work "to make the con as physically, socially, and financially accessible as possible, and to cultivate a culture of respect, support, and kindness."

October 17-20, 2024

Gamehole Con XI
Madison, WI

A favorite convention. Lots of good gaming, and it's John Kovalic's home convention, so if you are a Kovalic fan, you should come. Say hi to me, too.

September 21-22, 2024

Granite State Comicon
Manchester, NH

I have not been to this show before, but it comes very well recommended. They're enlarging their gaming program. You can help by . . . coming and playiing games!

Your Diagnosis

Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.

Information Density 0 / 30
Read the Narrative & headings: do hard facts (prices, dates, numbers) outweigh fluff power-words?
Semantic Coherence 0 / 20
Compare the homepage promise against the sub-page reality. Do they hold the same line?
Trust & Proof 0 / 20
Weigh review mentions against actual external proof links. Claims without verification = theatre.
Commodity Fingerprint 0 / 15
Check headings & narrative against the industry clichés in the setup above.
Identity & Authority 0 / 15
Inspect the schema: is there real Organization/Person identity with sameAs links, or gaps?
Your predicted BS score 0 / 100
💡 Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)

These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.

Information Density

Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.

Semantic Alignment

Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.

Trust & Proof

Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.

Commodity Fingerprint

Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.

Identity & Authority

Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.

Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

Steve Jackson Games is a rare ‘Substance-First’ entity. It operates with a total disregard for modern marketing BS, relying instead on high-specificity content and a transparent, chronological record of activity. The score is only elevated from zero by technical omissions in structured data.

Implement Organization and Person schema (JSON-LD) to technically codify the authority of Steve Jackson and the brand. Improve the heading hierarchy by using H2 and H3 tags to better structure the long-form blog content on the homepage and archives. Add external review integration (e.g., from BoardGameGeek) to provide third-party verification for specific game products mentioned in the Daily Illuminator.

The site is an exact match for the tabletop gaming and entertainment industry, functioning as a direct communication channel for a niche community. It bypasses corporate gloss in favor of specific product updates and personal anecdotes from the founder and staff.

“The score of 12 is driven primarily by the 'Identity and Authority' pillar (9 points) due to the total absence of structured schema and a 404 error detected during the crawl. The remaining 3 points come from minor marketing phrases in product titles and the lack of third-party review links. In terms of content, this is one of the most honest sites in the Arts & Entertainment category.”
