Industry Context — Common BS Fingerprints in Charities, Nonprofits & NGOs
Generic Claims: making a difference, changing lives, creating lasting impact, every donation counts…
Red Flags: no charity registration number, no published financial statements, emotional appeals without program specifics, vague impact claims without numbers…
Semantic Drift Patterns: homepage shows field work but programs page is vague, claims direct impact but finances show high admin ratios, mission targets one population but programs serve another, impact numbers on homepage not supported by program details…
Proof Expectations: published annual financial reports, charity registration number and regulatory body, specific program outcomes with measurable data, administrative-to-program spending ratios…

[H2] Mariam's story
[IMG: A close up of a middle aged woman who is looking directly into the camera. She looks worried.]
After my husband died, our family income dropped. I got into lots of debt - even though I work long hours.
Mariam
Mariam is a support worker and mother of 3. After her husband died, she struggled to make ends meet and got into debt, despite being in full-time employment.
When Mariam visited Citizens Advice, our adviser realised she was entitled to double the amount of government support. We also helped her get the best deal possible on her phone, energy and childcare bills, and gave her a budget planner to help her maximise her finances.
Things are still tough, but Mariam now feels more positive about the future.
This support has really helped my mental health, and I feel more confident about managing my money.

£20 could help make sure families facing eviction get the urgent help they need.
£50 could provide support for struggling families, so they don’t have to go to bed hungry.
Your gift can transform the lives of families facing their toughest times. Please consider making a regular gift to provide lasting help when it’s needed most.
[H2] Helping people through their toughest times
Millions of people are struggling with the cost of living. They’re facing a nightmare they never thought they would experience. With costs for food, housing and energy bills sky high, families are struggling to make ends meet. It’s stressful, isolating and frightening.
These increased costs affect us all, but for those in vulnerable situations they can be catastrophic. Every day we’re seeing thousands of people who need emergency support, people relying on food banks, and people who can’t afford the basic essentials.
Our advisers are a lifeline, providing expert advice and practical support to people like Mariam facing unthinkable hardship. Our teams are working flat out, but we can’t keep up with the number of people who urgently need our help.
Citizens Advice is a charity - we can’t do this alone. Your donation today could change a life - please help us be there for those facing their toughest times.

[H1] Our analysis of the problems people are facing
People face far more problems than they should because policy fails them. No-one sees that more than we do: we help more people with more problems than anyone else. That gives us a unique insight into the challenges people are facing today.
We use our evidence and insights to show decision makers where things aren’t working and make the case for change - so we can live in a society where people face far fewer problems.
[H2] Our focus areas
Our network of independent charities provide expert advice on key issues. Our policy research combines unique insight on the problems people face, and analysis of wider social and economic trends, to set out new ideas to improve policy for everyone.
[H2] Our latest data
All our insights start with people’s stories. From those stories, we build up a complete picture of problems in society. We can see which old issues are getting bigger and which new problems are just emerging - and can still be prevented. Find our latest insights on the most pressing problems people face.
Explore all our data.
[H3] Our Data Insights events
Our monthly Data Insights events showcase our frontline data from across the service, illustrating in real time how social and economic trends, alongside government policies, impact the lives of the people we help.
Each month we focus on a new theme and invite distinguished guest speakers to share their expertise with us; commenting on the political and economic landscape, and exploring opportunities to ease the pressure mounting on people from the rising cost of living.
For more information about our next event and to register, please visit our Eventbrite page. You can also watch back all our previous events.
[H3] Cost-of-living data trends
We're helping record numbers of people who need a food bank referral, who can't afford to turn on their heat or electricity or who've been made homeless. This is a key test for government policy: can it turn these trends around?

[H2] What we're saying
From our latest research to reports, here's what we're saying right now to push for change.
[H3] Frozen in place: Why the Government needs to move quicker to address energy affordability
Energy prices remain high, and households are experiencing record levels of energy debt. The government must introduce targeted bill support to recover living standards for those on low-incomes, and in particular households with children.

[H3] Debt to society: what the network companies should do with their windfall profits
Citizens Advice has completed a review of the current set of price controls that apply to energy network companies. Despite improvements, companies are significantly outperforming.

[H3] The National Red Index: how to turn the tide on falling living standards
The National Red Index tells us, for the first time, how many people nationally are in a negative budget. This is today's defining living standards issue. Here we set out what's driving negative budgets and what's needed to start turning the tide.
Cost of Living
Research
[H2] How we've made things better for people
We use our knowledge and evidence to campaign at the highest levels. Governments, regulators and companies have all made changes when we've shown them the evidence that policy can solve problems.
Since the pandemic, the government has adopted several of our recommendations, including extending the Universal Credit uplift and the suspension of the Minimum Income Floor for self employed workers.
[H2] Stories from the people we've helped
Millions of people come to us for help every year, each telling a story of systemic failure. Our clients are victims of poorly designed policies. Their stories drive our ambition to help every individual find a way forward, and also to fix the systemic problems which have led to them needing our advice in the first place.
Once we pay the bills and buy food there's nothing left. We're not sure what we are going to do as the prices are just going up for everything and we don't have any extra money coming in.

Your Diagnosis

Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.

Information Density 0 / 30
Read the Narrative & headings: do hard facts (prices, dates, numbers) outweigh fluff power-words?
Semantic Coherence 0 / 20
Compare the homepage promise against the sub-page reality. Do they hold the same line?
Trust & Proof 0 / 20
Weigh review mentions against actual external proof links. Claims without verification = theatre.
Commodity Fingerprint 0 / 15
Check headings & narrative against the industry clichés in the setup above.
Identity & Authority 0 / 15
Inspect the schema: is there real Organization/Person identity with sameAs links, or gaps?
Your predicted BS score 0 / 100
💡 Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)

These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.

Information Density

Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.

Semantic Alignment

Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.

Trust & Proof

Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.

Commodity Fingerprint

Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.

Identity & Authority

Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.

Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

This is a benchmark for low-BS NGO communication, prioritizing user utility and data-backed policy over marketing sentiment. Its only significant failures are technical: missing structured data and repetitive template headings.

Fix the H1 spacing error on the homepage (‘Welcome toCitizens Advice’). Implement Organization and ResearchProject schema to provide machine-readable authority for policy reports. Consolidate or hide the repeated ‘How we use cookies’ H2 headings to reduce template noise. Add a direct link to the Charity Commission registration and the latest audited annual report in the footer to satisfy proof path requirements.

The site is a definitive match for the Charities, Nonprofits & NGOs category. Its content is strictly divided between front-line advice services and systemic policy research, which perfectly aligns with the dual-purpose mission of major social advocacy organizations.

“The score of 21 is driven primarily by technical and trust-theatre flags rather than content fluff. Specifically, Step 3 (Trust and Proof) contributed 9 points due to unverified review flags, and Step 5 (Identity) contributed 6 points due to the lack of schema and minor technical typos. Step 2 (Semantic Coherence) was 0, reflecting perfect organizational alignment.”
