[H2] About A Star Equivalency test

The GCSE Equivalency Tests are a series of examinations in Maths, English, Science and Biology that follow the UK curriculum and provide learners with an opportunity to take an exam at any time of the year.

GCSE Equivalency Tests are intended for students who cannot evidence they have achieved a standard equivalent to grade C / 4 or above in the GCSE examinations. The equivalency exam result is used as an alternative to completing a GCSE for the purpose of meeting the entry requirements of post graduate courses including teacher training and nursing programmes. It is not a GCSE qualification.

A Star Equivalency Testing has been the leader in delivering Equivalency Tests since 2002 and our certificates are accepted by the vast majority of teacher training providers as well as some nursing and midwifery course providers as well.

At the request of many training providers and students alike we provide online GCSE equivalency tests as well as the traditional paper based exams.
To do these exams you require a computer with camera, microphone, keyboard, a stable internet connection and a phone with the ability to scan or photograph. No special hardware, software or training is required.

Results usually take a maximum of 10 working days after you sit the Equivalency Test. Candidates are sent official notification via email. A certificate is sent shortly after the result. If you require a quick turnaround of results (2 working days) we offer an equivalency results fast track service. Please select this option when making a booking.

With our course options, you get all the materials you need to revise effectively. Additionally, we also have webinar tutorials to help prepare learners, which is inclusive of the exam booking fee.

Candidates can re-sit Equivalency Test by rebooking directly through the site. Our resit support service will help you with preparing for your resit to help you reach the pass mark on the next exam.

UCL is one of the leading Universities in the country and are happy to accept the A Star Equivalency test results in Maths, English, Science and Biology as a way of meeting their entry requirements into teacher training. Please note, you will need to achieve a grade 5 in this qualification to gain access onto the UCL course as they only accept grade 5 qualifications for all GCSE and equivalencies. PGCE in Wales can sometimes be different in terms of the entry requirements. Sometimes a B grade is requested for access onto teacher training routes in Wales.

Independent senior examiners benchmark our equivalency exams and marking schemes covering the assessment objectives set out in recognised UK exam board GCSE specifications.
All current Combined Science board specifications are double award while students for primary teaching courses require single award. We therefore benchmark against the newest Internationally Combined Science Single award GCSE from Edexcel.
Exams are written, released and refreshed in batches throughout the year.

We have some partners who recommend the service with learners coming to us directly, where other Universities go for a support package that enables them to offer a paper based exam on their campus.
The key thing that our service offers to training providers is an independent way for their applicants to demonstrate the required competency in the core subjects, that will stand up to Ofsted inspection. We also have a dedicated support service for learners to take the pressure of University administration teams.

[H3] How A Star Equivalency prevents malpractice with AI Systems
New software tools such as ChatGPT by OpenAI present new challenges for examiners to ensure academic honesty during exams. Traditional plagiarism detection tools do not (yet) detect these AI-generated texts creating potential opportunities for student cheating with ChatGPT.
A Star Equivalency uses a platform built by examiners for the realities of the classroom. Ensuring the integrity of online exams and preventing malpractice is a big priority for us. The platform has multiple layers of protection built-in, and with the addition of an invigilator presence, we mitigate and reduce the potential risks posed by software tools. We continuously review and update our security protocols to stay current with the latest cheating methods.

[H3] How we prevents students from answering exam questions with AI Systems

Exam format: The format of examination questions makes it difficult for students to effectively gain any advantage by utilising these software tools in the first place.
No copy-paste: Blocking copy-paste removes the ability for students to copy and paste text during an exam, eliminating the possibility of students sharing answers with each other or directly using solutions generated by ChatGPT. We use advanced algorithms to detect when auto-typing software is being used and alert the invigilator of suspicious activity.
Exam focus: Exam focus prevents students from using other software during an exam. Professional Invigilators are alerted whenever a student leaves exam focus mode, allowing them to monitor students during the exam and detect any unwanted behaviour.
High security: The platform has a high-security mode that makes it even harder for students to cheat. In this mode, students are blocked from leaving the exam window until the exam is submitted. This mode completely prevents students from accessing other apps or websites during the exam.
Advanced back-end controls: The examination servers silently detect suspicious student activity. When this occurs, invigilators are informed about the students’ attempts, and how they tried to cheat. The invigilator is given recommendations on how to prevent such attempts in the future.

The online exam is very easy to use. You don’t need any special software. On the day of your exam, you will be emailed a Google Meets link 10-15 before your agreed start time. You simply click the link and connect with the exam invigilator. They will then talk through the instructions and share the exam link with you. The exam presents questions on screen, and you write your answers on paper, then scan this in at the end of the exam. It’s all straight forward to use and the exam invigilator will be there to help you.

You will need the following for the day of your exam:
An internet connection capable of sustaining a video call (please test before your exam day)
A web cam
Your ID
Pen, paper and a scientific calculator
Smartphone (to scan in your workings if you have done anything on paper).

The GCSE Maths Equivalency Test consists of:
1 hour Non-Calculator Paper – 50 marks
1 hour Calculator Paper – 50 marks
These papers are sat back to back in one 2 hour examination.
The A Star Equivalency maths specification gives all the topics required for higher and foundation.

Yes we offer both higher and foundation GCSE maths equivalency tests.
The foundation paper has a maximum grade awarded which is a 5, and you’d need a higher number of correct answers than if you sat a higher paper. However, whilst some questions are present in both exams, there is a greater focus on number and ratio than the higher paper and the questions are easier. Those that are less confident generally choose to sit the Maths GCSE foundation exam.
The higher paper gives grades from 3 – 9. These exams have some of the same questions as the foundation but have a greater focus on algebra, and geometry and measure than foundation and include more difficult questions. Higher papers are generally sat by more confident students seeking the highest grades (7,8 and 9).

You require a GCSE Maths equivalency for entry into a higher education courses that accept GCSE equivalencies (typically teacher training for QTS, midwifery and nursing).

Foundation is a shorter course and has much higher pass rates. We advise that all learners should sit foundation maths as foundation has a higher pass rate. The only exception to this advice is if you are looking to get into teaching in Wales and you need a grade 6 in GCSE maths. In this specific scenario you would have to take higher tier.

A Star Equivalency Testing has been the leader in delivering Equivalency Tests since 2002 and our certificates are accepted by most training providers. However, as there are hundreds of existing providers, new providers and policies can be subject to change. We therefore advise candidates to always check with their proposed provider.
