who offers affordable quality childcare for children from 3 months to 5 years. We cater for everyone here at Caterpillars and offer the best possible service for you and your child.
Myself Claire Robinson established the Nursery in 2006 and have been building up our strong reputation ever since. We pride ourselves in our quality service, care for the children and strong relationships with our families, and have excellent good Ofsted ratings.
My dedicated team will provide you with a home from home learning environment that caters for individual needs, and focus on the children's well-being.

[H2] What's it like for a child at Caterpillars Nursery?

[H4] We endeavour to build a homely and welcoming atmosphere within our setting and strive to ensure the environment in which your child is placed is meeting their individual needs at all times.

[H4] To facilitate this each child’s home routines and requirements will be discussed with parents prior to admission and any particular conditions can be met before the child is placed in our care.

There is a minimum ratio of one member of staff to eight children aged three and over, one to five for two year olds and one to three for babies under two as required by Ofsted. Once your child has settled into nursery they will be allocated a key-person who is responsible for monitoring their development.
Your child’s progress and development is recorded electronically using Tapestry. Parents can view their child’s observations online at any time.
We will also complete a progress review at the end of each half term.You are invited to discuss your child’s development at any time.
Nutritious cooked meals are provided to all children who attend. An additional fee may apply if you access the funded childcare. Fresh filtered water is available during both morning and afternoon sessions for all children to access independently. A light tea is provided for those children who attend the longer afternoon sessions. We have a secure enclosed outdoor play area, offering an all-weather canopied area, with a variety of play equipment for all ages.The outdoors is a valuable tool for development and outdoor play is encouraged during each session.

Outdoor Learning

[H1]  Our Outdoor Learning
environment

At Caterpillars Day Nursery, we understand the importance of outdoor learning. It is widely recognised that children accessing day care facilities need a good balance of indoor and outdoor activities. Physical exercise and fresh air are crucial to the natural process of child development.We have an outdoor area which is continuously developing thanks to the commitment of a staff team who continually strive to provide a balanced curriculum which includes a well-planned outdoor environment where children are allowed freedom of movement, the key to quality learning.

[H2] Exploring the outdoor environment
Children gain enormous benefits from learning outdoors. Here at Caterpillars children access our outdoor space on a daily basis – regardless of all except the worst weather.  Being outdoors allows them to move around without many of the restrictions of being inside. They can fill their lungs with clean air and use all of their senses to appreciate the colours, different noises, the sense of space and of scale. Being outdoors supports confidence and allows opportunities for big scale play, problem-solving and creativity in the company of other children. Physical activity is enhanced. So is calculated risk taking. In the outdoors, children’s use of language is five times greater than indoors.

[H2] Effective practice outdoors
Effective practice outdoors involves providing opportunities for children in meaningful, engagingexperiences that support their development in all areas of the curriculum. This will include opportunitiesfor children to:- be excited, energetic, adventurous, noisy, messy;- talk, listen, interact, make friends;- imagine, dream, invent, fantasise;- create, invent, construct, deconstruct;- investigate, explore, discover, experiment with their own ideas and theories;- make sounds and music, express ideas and feelings;- find patterns, make marks, explore different media and materials;- investigate concepts and ideas;- be active, run, climb, pedal, jump, throw;- dig, grow, nurture, cultivate;- hide, relax, find calm, reflect;- have responsibility, be independent, collaborate with others.

[H2] What will my child explore outside?
All children have access to a secured garden throughout the day, where they can play and socialise. We organise various learning activities on a regular basis, both indoors and outdoors.
Our CCTV also covers our outdoor areas to ensure the maximum safety for your children.
All staff will encourage outdoor play in all different types of weathers and situations. We also strive to provide opportunities for learning within the local area of the nursery.

Baby & Toddler unit

[H4] Welcome to Our baby and toddler unit

At Caterpillars we have a specially equipped section for children aged from 3 months to two years. We offer high quality attentive care tailored to the requirements of younger children. A wide variety of play equipment and materials ensures children are able to develop in ways that best suit their individual needs continually supported by our qualified and experienced staff.
The high ratio of one member of staff to three children ( 3months - 24months) and one member of staff to five children ( 2 years - 3 years) enables us to give the necessary greater level of attention to the younger children. There is a designated sleeping area equipped with a sufficient number of beds to ensure that each child can follow his or her own sleeping pattern.
We ask parents to provide the items required by their children on a daily basis such as nappies, creams and other consumables.

[H2] A nurturing environment for your little ones
At Caterpillars Day Nursery, we create an environment of comfort and safety for your child. All our staff have been DBS checked, and are committed to providing your little one with quality care and nurturing experiences. Staff have extensive knowledge of childhood development and can support in your journey.
Activities in all of our rooms are currently planned in accordance
with government guidelines laid out in The Early Years Foundation Stage. Thereby offering
a coherent and flexible approach to the care and learning of young children, based around
the following four principles: a unique child, positive relations, enabling environment and
learning and development.
These four principles support practitioners to ensure the
effective care and development of all children and makes certain all areas of early
education are covered.

At Caterpillars we provide learning experiences in the Baby and toddler unit that focus on children’s social relationships to help support their growing sense of themselves as individuals and to encourage confidence and self-esteem. Children are supported in understanding new concepts by encouraging patience and tolerance and modelling positive ways to treat one another.We introduce activities to meet their natural curiosity, growing energy and development.
We encourage exploration and introduce skills such as: Sensory and tactile skillsGross motor skillsCommunication and language developmentPersonal, social and emotional development
In an positive environment filled with encouragement, your child will experience the early success he or she needs to grow and develop independence.

[H3] Early learning experiences
Babies grow and learn at an amazing rate, so we try to create as many learning opportunities as possible using all seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
We cater for all of the children's personal needs ensuring they are settled, comforted and protected whilst in our care.
A friendly atmosphere is created within our nursery environments, based on warm and caring relationships between our nursery staff and the children in their care.
Babies are encouraged to communicate, and their attempts at conversation are valued to ensure they receive an affirming experience, encouraging development, confidence and security.
Our nursery staff all act as role models within the setting, and recognise that children lead by example and are constantly learning through observation. Common courtesy, mutual respect and patience are demonstrated at all times throughout our settings.

2-5's Unit

[H2]  Welcome to Our 2-5's Unit

Our 2-5's unit offers a secure, safe a welcoming environment where your child can explore and actively learn. At this stage your child will be provided with opportunities to develop in all seven areas of learning, and will be able to explore and build upon their own interests and abilities.
Our specific learning areas allow all children to become engaged, interested and independent during their play, whilst receiving the best high quality teaching from our experienced practitioners.All children will have a key worker  which will observe and assess your child's learning and development, to ensure they are learning the skills needed to ensure they are ready to move on to school.

[H4] Creating and thinking critically
We encourage the children to have their own ideas, make link and choose ways to do things whilst learning.All our staff model being a thinker, we encourage open ended thinking and always respect the children's efforts and ideas. We encourage risk taking in the setting and explore different ways to do things.This sustained shared thinking helps children to explore ideas and make links.

[H4] Playing and exploring
We provide stimulating resources which are accessible and open ended so they can be used, moved and combined in a variety of ways.We encourage children to develop their own interests and use these to learn through play.Our senses guide us and allow us to share experiences with others and show curiosity and interest in our play.

Children will become more deeply involved when you provide something that is new and unusual for them to explore, especially when it is linked to their interests. We ensure the children are concentrating, focused and motivated whilst learning.When exploring we encourage persistence and believe when challenges to occur.The children enjoy what they achieve and welcomes praise for their achievements.

" At Caterpillars we believe that children learn best when they are doing something they enjoy and consequently learn best through play" Our 2-5's Unit offer children plenty of opportunities and experiences to further extend their learning. The EYFS is used to plan activities that encourage our children to explore and investigate their environment. We want them to be curious, excited and eager to learn. They play more with other children and want to be part of the group. They can play for extended periods, plan complex games and negotiate what will happen next.We encourage all children to express their thoughts and wishes, and provide regular wellbeing and mindfulness sessions to the children every month. They continue to develop their physical skills, both gross and fine motor. Children begin to know letters and numbers and that words convey meaning. Our Curriculum

Our Early Years Curriculum
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a play-based curriculum for children from birth to five years, which allows children to explore and learn in an environment that is secure and safe, yet challenging. Play opportunities are non-stereotypical and available to all children promoting the teaching and learning from a skilled workforce.

- This is between staff, parents, outside agencies and governing bodies.Equality of opportunity - We support Anti-discriminatory practice and promote inclusive services for all.

[H3] Every child has the chance to join in with other children and adults to live, play, work and learn together and is helped to take forward his/her learning and development by being helped to build on what they already know.

The aim of our early year’s curriculum is to provide high quality care and education for children attending our setting who are below statutory school age. We work together with parents to help children learn and develop encouraging and promoting equality and diversity.
Parents are regarded as members of our setting who have full participatory rights. These include the right to be valued and respected, kept informed and consulted and to be involved and included at all levels.
We also aim to ensure that every child is in a safe and stimulating environment, is given generous care and attention with the help of staff ratios of qualified and voluntary staff.
Each child will have a personal key worker who makes sure they make satisfying progress.
Children start to learn about the world around them from the moment they are born. The care and education offered by our setting helps children to continue to do this by providing all of the children with interesting activities that are appropriate for their age and stage of development. The Early Years Foundation stage is spilt into Prime and Specific areas.
Prime areas are fundamental to be able to work together and move through and support development in all other areas.
Specific areas include essential skills and knowledge for children to participate successfully in society.

[H3] Our approach to learning, development and assessment.

[H4] Learning through play
Play helps young children to develop through playing and talking, which research has shown to be the means by which children learn to think.
Here at Caterpillars we use the Early Years Foundation Stage to plan and provide a range of play activities which help children to make progress in each area of learning and development.
In some of these activities’ children decide how they will use the activity and, in others, an adult takes the lead in helping the children to take part in the activity. In all activities the information arises from the Early Years Foundation Stage has been used to decide what equipment to provide and how to provide it.

[H4] Assessment

We assess how young children are learning and developing by observing them frequently. We use information that we gain from observations, as well as photographs and videos of the children, to document their progress and where this may be leading them.
We believe that parents know their children best and we ask them to contribute to assessment by sharing information about what their children like to do at home and hoe they as parents are supporting development.We make periodic assessment summaries of children’s achievements based on our on-going development records.
These form part of children’s records of achievement. We undertake these assessment summaries at regular intervals as well as times of transition, such as when a child moves into a different group or when they go on to school.

[H4] Records of achievement
Caterpillars keeps developmental records for each child containing information, children’s work and photographic evidence.Children’s records help us to celebrate together his/her achievements and to work together to provide what children need for his/her wellbeing and to make further progress.
Each child has a key worker who will keep these records up to date. To do this staff will collect information about each child’s needs, activities, interests and achievements.This information will enable the key person to identify your child’s stage of progress. The key person will then decide how to help move your child onto the next stage.

Culture of safety

Caterpillars Day nursery will work alongside children, parents and the community to ensure the rights and safety of children are met. And ensure they are given the very best start in life.We consider the need to protect all children that we care for including young people aged 16-19 as defined in the children’s act 1989. This may include students, young employees and young parents. We carry out the following procedures to ensure we meet the three key commitments of the Alliance safeguarding children’s policy.We are aware that those with additional vulnerabilities such as those with disabilities are further at risk from harm, this is why we ensure that procedures are put in place to protect them.The designated safeguarding lead is Claire RobinsonIn her absence it would be Lidi wall and Sandeep SandhuIn the event of any serious incident, accident, injury, or death of a child while in our care will be reported to our first response team and Ofsted and we must act upon advice given by them.

Procedures of staff and volunteers

In the setting we ensure:- A designated member of staff who will always co-ordinate child protection and safeguarding issues on site . - We ensure all staff and parents are made aware of our safeguarding policies and procedures - We provide adequate and appropriate staffing resources to meet the needs of the children.- Students or volunteers do not work unsupervised - All staff have read and signed a professional code of conduct- We have procedure for recording the details of visitors to the setting - We take security steps to ensure that we have control over who comes in to the setting so that no unauthorised person has unsupervised access to the children.- All information about staff member’s qualifications, identity checks and vetting processes are securely recorded and stored in correspondence to GDPR guidelines. - All staff are informed that they must disclose any convictions, cautions, court orders and reprimands, which may affect their suitability to work. New staff members- New staff members are informed of the need to carry out ‘enhanced disclosure, checks with the disclosure barring service before post can be confirmed.- Where applications are rejected because of information that has been disclosed, applicants have the right know and to challenge incorrect information.- All candidates are informed that employment is subject to two references from previous employment - We abide by OFSTED requirements of references and disclosure barring service check for staff and volunteers, to ensure that no disqualified person or unsuitable person works at the setting or has access to children.- Applications within the provision are informed that positions are exempt from the rehabilitation of offenders act 1974.

what we do when responding to suspicions.

- Acknowledge that child abuse can take different forms – physical, emotional, and sexual, as well as neglect.- When children are suffering from physical, sexual and emotional abuse, or may be experiencing neglect, this may be demonstrated through the things they say (direct or indirect disclosure) or through changes in their appearance, their behaviour, or their play.- We will consider factors affecting a parental capacity such as drug and alcohol misuse, abuse, mental or physical illnesses, domestic violence or a parent’s learning disability. - Where such evidence is apparent, the child’s key person makes a dated record of the details of the concern and discusses what to do with the settings leader or manager who is acting as the designated person. The information is stored on the child’s personal file.- We refer concerns to the local authority children’s social care MASH (MULTI AGENCY SAFEGUARDING HUB) MASH is a multi-agency across the city that we can access who will respond to safeguarding issues involving children and young people and acts as a central single point for early help and safeguarding referrals and co-operate fully in any subsequent investigation.We use the detailed procedure for reporting and making referrals to social care or other agencies.

What we do?

Allegations against staff- We ensure that all parents know how to complain about the behaviour or actions of staff or volunteers within the setting or anyone working on the premises occupied by the setting which may include an allegation of abuse.- We follow a complaint procedure and guidance for safer working practice when responding to any complaint that a member of staff, or volunteer within the setting, or anyone working on the premises occupied by the setting.- We respond to any disclosures by children or staff that abuse by a member of staff or volunteer within the setting, by first recording the details of any such alleged incident- We refer any such complaint immediately to the local authority officer (LADO) within one working day of the allegation.- A  Referral form of an allegation against an adult who works with children will be completed when requested by LADO.- LADO will offer advice to the setting on how to deal with such allegations.- We co-operate entirely with any investigation carried out by children’s social care in conjunction with the police. - Where management committee and children’s social care agree it is appropriate in the circumstances, the manager will suspend the member of staff on full pay, or the volunteer, for the duration of the investigation. This is not an indication of admission that the alleged incident has taken place but is to protect the staff as well as children and families throughout the process.- All allegations should be reported to OFSTED Once an allegation has been received the following will be considered - Police investigation of a possible criminal offence - An assessment by children’s social care to consider if a child is in need of protection or in need of services.Consideration by the organisation of disciplinary Action regarding the person of concern If an allegation against a volunteer or employee is received - We will not ask victims or witnesses to provide statements or ask them to sign their signatures - We will write down what is said -keep an accurate record and maintain them securely- We will ensure the person we have concern about is safeguarded and supported.- We will not prejudge the outcome.Disciplinary Action - Where a member of staff or volunteer has been dismissed due to engaging in activities that caused concern for the safeguarding of children or vulnerable adults, we will notify the independent Safeguarding Authority of relevant information so that individuals, who pose a threat to children, can be identified and barred from working with these groups.- We abide by the safeguarding vulnerable groups act 2006 in respect to any person who is dismissed or resigns for reasons of a child protection issue.

[H3] Guidance for if you child is unwell
It is common for children who attend day nurseries to pick up illnesses quicker than those who do not, this is due to the constant exposure to other children in close proximity, and of cause this means more germs and bugs!
Although our hygiene and safety is of high importance to us here at Caterpillars there are certain situations which mean we have to put measures in place to stop the spread of infectious illnesses.
To the right, you can see a list of infectious and communicable illnesses and diseases.If your child has any of these it must be reported to the nursery as soon as you can.
General guidance is to try and ring as soon as you can to make us aware, our phone lines are open to parents from 7:30am - 6:00pm everyday.Our staff will be following these policies and procedures set out by Caterpillars nursery, so we would be grateful if you respected decisions  made even though they may effect your day to day arrangements.
