Hi Eric,
Thank you again for your advice. It really paid off. The people I met at XXXXXXX (airlines) were, without exception, very nice and happy to be there. I met with the Director of Human Resources and the Manager of Operational Control.
The interview basically had two parts: your normal everyday interview questions and then the hair raising “Didn’t I just pass my Oral?” part.
The material they went over was pretty much identical to what you had advised me to be prepared in. They asked some straightforward questions on weather theory and then gave a couple scenarios and asked how I would handle them. I also went through a (weather charts) with them and they asked me how I would brief pilots on the weather within their area. They had me decode a METAR, and then they threw a few approach plates at me. I had to derive alternate minimums and identify a whole bunch of items on the plates. They also gave me a low altitude en route chart and asked me to identify a bunch of things. All told, the technical part of the interview lasted about a half hour.
I also remembered (what you told me) about always wanting to learn more, that good dispatchers never stop learning and how the license wasn’t just one to practice, it was also a license to learn.
All in all, I think it went really well…the Ops Manager took me around the dispatch center. The way he was talking to me made it seem as though they were very interested. I
hope I’m right! Anyway, thank you again for everything. I am very glad I chose Sheffield.
I felt very confident (not overconfident though) and prepared during the interview. The Ops Manager said a lot of good things about Sheffield and that he had interviewed candidates who couldn’t even read a METAR.
I’ll let you know what happens as soon as I find out.

Amazing school! Eric and Brett are a hell of a team. I’m a high school drop out who knew nothing about aviation. I’ve been crew scheduling for three months now, just got promoted to planning and now I’m about to transfer to dispatch. If you’re going to dispatch, choose the school that does it the best. Sheffield will get my vote. Before I went, my research told me they were the best choice. The following year I went to xx xx xx at XXX for my recurrent training. When the other students who’d gotten their initials at XXX heard I got my initial (dispatcher certification) at Sheffield, they were actually in awe and said, “Ohh wow!! Mr. Eric for that first email in 2021 when I inquired about the school, and you shared a lot of useful information which made me make the choice to come to Sheffield. In addition, much appreciated for the practical interview which was very professional. I really appreciate.
To Mrs. Katja I really appreciate your patient when I was trying to get the visa since 2021, your assistance and patient helped a lot. Your recommendations on accommodation were also on point and I got an exceptionally good accommodation option. I will be sending a separate email to the host with you in cc on this.
To Mr. Brett, your sharing of knowledge was excellent and went a long way in answering questions at the practical test, tests in class as well as the ADX test. “I hope this note finds you and the company well. Over the course of nearly 25 years, I have had a highly successful career as an aircraft dispatcher thanks to you and the fine people at Sheffield. A couple of years at Piedmont, a few months at Midway and 20 years at SkyWest.

I was offered and have accepted a position as a flight dispatcher with CommutAir. My training begins on November 1st so things have been moving pretty quickly. I was contacted that same day I applied and was pretty quickly set up with a second interview and both interviewers seemed impressed with my knowledge. I am grateful for the incredible quality of the education that you have provided to me and others which has clearly cultivated a well respected identity within the industry.

..I just wanted to let you (& Brett) know that I was hired at Mesa Airlines out here in Phoenix, AZ!
I have “officially” been on the desk for about 3 weeks and I feel fully prepared. I still utilize the Sheffield binder that we received! Also, many of my managers are familiar with Sheffield and view your school in an extremely positive light…

Sheffield offer an insightful, challenging, and rewarding course to obtain your FAA Aircraft Dispatcher License. Eric and Brett are industry veterans who are terrific role models and incorporate a great sense of humor and insight into the curriculum. I completed the course via a combination of online training and two weeks in class.
As a commercial pilot and flight instructor, I found the course informative and accretive in terms of widening my knowledge of the aviation industry and particularly operational requirements on the airline side of the spectrum. If you work hard, complete the required assignments and homework, and are prepared to dedicate a few weeks/months of you life to rigorous study than you will pass and succeed (regardless of whether you come from an aviation background or not). Eric and Brett provide all the tools and resources you need to do well, and I can’t complement them enough for putting together a terrific program.
There is nothing antiquated about the program (to the individual who mentions working with 727 systems). We utilized industry-based materials in class, discuss modern aircraft communications, and use the 727 as a template to model flight plans and performance metrics in large part due to some of the quirks of the aircraft to show one how to manage dispatch planning in the event they do find themselves planning a flight for a plane with inop equipment or with a quirky aircraft.
This course is designed to be challenging so that when it comes to real world dispatching and not to mention the FAA practical you are more than well prepared. Thank you for having me as a student!

As the oldest aircraft dispatcher school in the country, we know a thing or two about getting your aircraft dispatcher license and what to expect in the dispatcher career field. An FAA licensed aircraft dispatcher can be described as “the captain on the ground.” When you become an aircraft dispatcher, you will find yourself in one of the most important jobs at an airline. While the pilot is responsible for his or her one particular flight, the aircraft dispatcher is responsible for multiple flights at the same time.

[H2] Aircraft Dispatcher Job Description
If you are interested in flight dispatcher training, you should know exactly what a flight dispatcher career entails. The aircraft dispatcher shares responsibility for the flight with the captain. Both are required to sign the Dispatch Release before the flight can legally operate.
The dispatcher is responsible for planning the flight. They will take into consideration the weather, any maintenance problems on the aircraft, navigational facilities at the appropriate airports, Notices to Airmen (NOTAMS), and alternate airport options. They will also exercise flight following while the flight is in progress and maintain communication with their flights. If there are any significant changes that would affect the safety of the flight, dispatchers will be the ones who are responsible for notifying the captain. The aircraft dispatcher will delay or cancel a flight when necessary and make any other operational decisions required to ensure the safety of the flight.
Most airlines will have a centrally located dispatch office that controls all flights of that particular airline. As an example, United Airlines has a dispatch office is in Chicago, Delta Air Lines has an office in Atlanta, and Endeavor Air is in Minneapolis. The dispatch department has historically been one of the best places in the airlines for promotions. The department has control over the operations of the airline, and consequently, you are generally in close contact with the senior officers of the company. The dispatcher has always been an important individual in the operation of an airline and will certainly continue to be so in the future.

[H2] What Qualifications Do You Need to Become an Aircraft Dispatcher?
First and foremost, a dispatcher must obtain a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Aircraft Dispatcher Certificate. To qualify for this certificate, one must be at least 23 years old, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and pass a written and practical exam. The written exam covers a wide range of topics, including meteorology, aircraft systems, air traffic control procedures, and flight planning.
Along with the certification, you will need a deep understanding of aviation regulations and safety procedures is essential. Dispatchers must be able to make informed decisions to ensure the safety of both passengers and crew. Additionally, strong communication skills are crucial for liaising with pilots, air traffic control, and other airline personnel.

Becoming a flight dispatcher is no walk in the park; it’s a demanding and high-pressure profession. Aircraft dispatch school typically lasts for about 4 to 6 weeks. During this comprehensive training program, aspiring dispatchers are immersed in a rigorous curriculum that covers a wide range of topics essential to the profession. These include meteorology, air traffic control procedures, aircraft systems, navigation, regulations, and flight planning. The duration may vary slightly depending on the specific school or program, as some institutions offer more extensive coursework or additional certification options. The FAA mandates a minimum of 200 hours of classroom instruction – some of which can be approved online – which serves as a foundational requirement for all programs. After successfully completing these courses, along with passing the FAA Practical (certification) examination, certified graduates will be prepared for airline initial training and eventually begin working as aircraft dispatchers.

On average, you can expect to invest anywhere from $4,000 to $6,000 for tuition and course materials. However, the cost of attending an aircraft dispatch academy can vary widely depending on several factors, including the institution, the location, and what the specific program offers. For example, an online dispatcher school will be charged differently than other courses.
