Think of it as a short-term safety net for your current account. Only pay interest if you use it Quick access to funds It takes about 5 minutes to apply in Online Banking or the mobile app (app eligibility applies) [H3] Will using an overdraft affect my credit score? Using an overdraft could affect your credit score if your account remains inside the overdraft limit for long periods and you don’t pay it back. However, if you pay off your overdraft regularly, this could actually help to improve your credit rating. When you apply for an overdraft, or an increase to your existing overdraft, we do carry out a credit check which will be recorded on your credit file and could have an impact. Before applying, we recommend you use our eligibility checker to find out if you’re likely to be offered an overdraft. This check will be recorded on your credit file but will not have any impact. To find out more about credit scoring, read our credit scoring guide. If you’re worried about your credit score, or your finances in general, you can schedule a financial health check with us. [H2] Manage my existing overdraft You can make changes to your arranged overdraft in our mobile app or via Online Banking. Here's what you need to know. [H3] Increasing my limit When applying to increase your limit, tell us what you want your new overdraft limit to be, not the amount you want to increase it by. Remember, increasing your limit is recorded on your credit file and could affect your ability to get credit in the future. [H3] Reducing my limit The minimum overdraft limit you can have is £250. So if your current limit is lower than £250, you won't be able to reduce it any more. Keep in mind that if you reduce your overdraft too much, you might go into an unarranged overdraft. [H3] Removing my limit If you want to remove your overdraft completely, your account must be in credit. [H3] When will my new limit be available? If you complete your request and it's approved Mon - Thurs before 5:30pm, your new limit will be available the next working day. Outside these times, it will take up to 2 working days. Continue to manage your overdraft Open in new window [H3] Why chance it? Check if we’ll say ‘yes’. Check if you could get an overdraft before you apply. It’s free to check, takes minutes and won’t affect your credit score. Got a joint account? We suggest you each check, as you might get different results. Check your eligibility if you’re new to us Open in new window Check your eligibility if you bank with us Open in new window [H2] Understanding how overdraft costs work Overdraft costs Further costs details Types of overdrafts [H3] Arranged overdraft charges We don’t charge fees for using an arranged overdraft – we only charge interest on the amount of overdraft you use. The interest you pay depends on the type of current account you have with us. [H3] Unarranged overdraft charges If you go into an unarranged overdraft, we will charge interest (this will also depend on the type of your current account). The monthly cap on unarranged overdraft charges for our standard adult current accounts is £18.80. 1. Each current account will set a monthly maximum charge for: going overdrawn when you have not arranged an overdraft; or going over/past your arranged overdraft limit (if you have one). 2. This cap covers any: interest for going over/past your arranged overdraft limit; fees for each payment your bank allows despite lack of funds; and fees for each payment your bank refuses due to lack of funds. [H3] Returned payments An Unpaid Transaction Fee of £1.55 is charged for a transaction that we return unpaid. A transaction (e.g. a Direct Debit) will be returned if the payment cannot be met from funds in your account or any unused arranged overdraft facility and we decide in our discretion not to make the payment. [H3] Charging periods Charges are accrued during a charging period. At the end of the charging period you will be notified of the total amount owed and when it will be taken from your account - this will be 21 days after the end of the charging period. The charging period start date is always the day after the account statement is produced, i.e. if statements are set to be produced on the 1st of the month, the charging period will start on the 2nd and finish on the 1st of the next month. [H3] What is an arranged overdraft? An arranged overdraft is when we agree to a limit that lets you spend a bit more money than you have in your current account. This could help you manage your money if you have to cover short-term expenses such as an unexpected bill. [H3] What is an unarranged overdraft? An unarranged overdraft is when you spend more money than you have and you haven’t previously arranged an overdraft limit with us, or you have exceeded your existing overdraft limit. [H3] Free text alerts If you start to use an arranged or unarranged overdraft, we'll send you free text alerts to keep you updated. [H4] Overdraft text alert service If we have your UK mobile number, we'll enroll you in our automated overdraft text alert service. If you have an arranged overdraft, we'll text you if you've started using it (for example, if you have made a cash withdrawal) or if you are about to start using it (due to a scheduled payment, like a Direct Debit). [H4] Unarranged overdraft Act Now alerts We'll also send unarranged overdraft Act Now Alerts which let you know if you're about to go into an unarranged overdraft or have a payment rejected, so you can take action to make sure that payments are made and avoid charges. If we can't text in advance, we'll send one the next day. You can opt out or amend these alerts using Online Banking, the mobile banking app or by talking to us over the phone or directly in branch. Your Diagnosis
Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.
Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)
These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.
Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.
Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.
Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.
Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.
Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.
Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

Financial Services, Banking & Insurance BS: NatWest (www.natwest.com)
NatWest delivers a masterclass in low-BS corporate communication by prioritizing regulatory transparency over marketing gloss. The decision to publish mediocre independent rankings (13th place) demonstrates a level of substance that effectively neutralizes its minor use of banking clichés.
Consolidate the repetitive H2 Get the app headings on the Travel and App pages to improve structural coherence. Update the App Store ratings timestamp from August 2024 to a 2025 or 2026 metric to maintain temporal credibility. Replace the fluff-heavy H2 Get them bossing it with a descriptive heading like Kids’ Money Management Tools to match the high-density technical tone of the rest of the site.
The content perfectly aligns with the Financial Services and Banking category, specifically focusing on retail banking, mortgages, and savings. The presence of FCA-regulated language, FSCS protection details, and APR/AER disclosures confirms a high-fidelity industry match.
“The score of 12 is driven by exceptional transparency and high specificity in product pricing. Small point additions occurred in Information Density due to repetitive 'Get the App' headings and in Commodity Fingerprint due to standard 'trusted by millions' language, but the site successfully avoids all major red flags and authority gaps.”
