1965 - 2025 Celebrating 60 years!!The South Hams Motor Club has its roots firmly in club level motorsport. Celebrating 60 years in 2025 the club has established a great reputation for promoting motorsport in the southwest of England. Geographically, the club “footprint” lies along the A38 Expressway and between Torbay and Plymouth in South Devon.We do of course have members from outside the area but mainly we live within the “South Hams”. There is a monthly committee meeting where the forthcoming events are planned and an Annual Awards Dinner to celebrate our members' performances.There is always something going on whether it is a Scalextric Grand Prix or National Rally – you just have to join in – we are a friendly bunch! Participate in well organised navigation based road rallies that challenge your skills and provide unmatched fun. Testing the skills of both driver and navigator - teamwork is essential.  A daylight "Targa" rally has been added to our list of navigation based events - all the fun without a torch in sight!

We organise stage rallies  at RRH Portreath, Cornwall. Usually around 90 miles of sealed surface rallying to test the crew and car preparation!

STATEMENT FROM THE COMMITTEE OF SHMCThank you to everyone who has given so much support to both the TSH and to the CARL SORENSEN RALLY held on 1 April this year which was organised to celebrate Carl's life, with the request and support of his family.  We have been honoured to do have run this for the second year running - after several false starts due to Covid.As many of you have been telling us for years, RRH Portreath is not the standard it used to be and while we have been putting a sticking plaster - and lots of tarmac and concrete and days of hard work each and every year to improve the current state of the surfaces - it is a never ending challenge.With the change in MOD's stance and subsequent multi-use by other organisations of the areas we would wish to use for any Stage Rally, SHMC no longer feel they can continue to maintain a decent surface to run two stage rallies here on an annual basis.Reluctantly SHMC committee have taken the decision that in 2024 they will only organise one Stage Rally at RRH Portreath due to the venue conditions. It has been decided that as a flagship event, which has won numerous accolades from competitors, this will be the TSH Stages in 2024.The committee would certainly wish to organise the Carl Sorensen Rally again in the future but like so many events these days, securing a good venue to ensure competitors and crews have a really good day’s motorsport must be a priority. As a Club we have a team of people who are constantly researching different venues with a view to run a good event there.We know you will be very disappointed with our decision and it is not one we have taken lightly - thank you again for all your support and we hope to see you at our events in the future.Issued: 14th MAY 2023

[H2] 12 cars - a new hobby for a Friday night...
Entry Form HEREIntroductionThe club organises a number of "12 Car" navigation rallies. These are a great way of learning the skills of map reading and time keeping. Many of the great Navigators at National, International and World Rally Championship level have learned their trade this way. You may have heard of Nicky Grist, Phil Mills - both served their apprenticeship in the lanes around south Wales and went on to become World Rally Champion Co-Drivers/Navigators with Juha Kankkunen and Petter Solberg respectively.Our club has produced some top class navigators who are keen to help get newcomers started.The events usually start at a pub about 9pm and finish in time for "last orders". The emphasis being on plotting the route going the right way! Working as a team, both driver and navigator have a lot of fun! It doesn't cost a lot and you can use a standard road car, fancy giving it a go?There is a very good article on "The adventures of 12-Car Rallying" in Motorsport UK's Feb. 2025 "Revolution" magazine on page 44 - HEREIf you wish to know more about these events held approximately 8 - 10 times a year please get in contact or better still join the club and come along to see what they are all about. If you are a beginner (driver or navigator) someone will talk you through it all and answer any questions you may have!To enter South Hams Motor Club 12 Car events a valid Membership Card is required.The event entry fee is £10.If you require the "Top-up" insurance and can comply with the requirements (detailed in the 12 Car Rules and Regulations document below) the fee is £35 making £45 in total.INSURANCE"Top up" insurance is expensive so if you are planning on doing a few of these events you could consider extending your own insurance to cover motorsport using a specialist provider. South Hams Motor Club have been running night road events since 1972 and we are constantly looking for the “ideal” format, listening to competitors and the changing conditions in the sport and area. We feel accuracy on both sides of the car will be required for a good result on our events.  Our part of Devon is well known for being tight and twisty as previous entrants to our events will testify – this is about teamwork and great map-reading skills.

Autocross is true grass roots motor sportIndeed it has a strong presence in the history of our Motor Club and while we have been running events non stop every year (weather permitting!), venue availability has taken us away from our ‘home patch’ in recent years. It was no mean feat to source a more local venue again which we did in 2017 and hope to in 2025. We were pleased to be able to host another event in the South Hams area.We really would like to make the event a highlight of our local calendar for all our members, no matter what type of motor sport brought you into the Club.Join in the fun!You can start to compete in Autocross events from the age of 14. As long as you have an RS Clubman licence (the free one) for Clubman status events, the basic safety gear of fire resistant overalls, gloves, crash helmet and a fire extinguisher, you can take your everyday car and have a go. Cars vary from Standard Road Cars, Rally cars, Lightweight Autocross Cars and Specials. If you are a really serious competitor it is advisable to trailer the car to the events, as this is an off road sport and things do break. But saying that it is great fun and a good adrenalin rush.We will be running two cars starting side by side, with another two setting off when the first pair are halfway around the first lap. Timing is against the clock, so if you want that fastest time, you will have to beat the competitor alongside you into the first corner and then stay in front.Sorry, no spectators but you can come along and Marshal!While we will not have a permit to allow us to cater for spectators, there are plenty of opportunities for members to come along, get involved and enjoy the spectacle - be it for both days, just one, or just a couple of hours.Marshals are needed both in the paddock to help line up the competitors to the start line for example; and out along the track to observe if they all keep to the track, advising for penalties if they don’t, and maybe putting the marker posts back up between the runs if (or more likely when!) they are knocked down.If admin is more your thing, there is always help needed at signing on at the beginning of the day, or perhaps some competing members might appreciate some help in their paddock spot between their runs?The idea is to come along, sign on and enjoy yourself - this is why we run events - for the benefit of our members of all kinds and motor sport in general.For most events Signing-On is from 8am Saturday, 9am Sunday, with the action starting from 10am both days.Find out more!If you would like to chat or ask for more details speak to Simon 07970 818083
