When reducing a tree, the idea is to reduce the size of the canopy. Both the height and the width of the tree can be reduced, or just one, depending on the desired outcome and reason for reducing.There can be several reasons for wanting to reduce a tree, for example:
[H3] Reduce the overall weight of potentially dangerous limbs
Some branches can become very heavy over years of growth and, in time, can fail. This is usually due to a combination of high wind, snow, or an issue with the tree itself. It is recommended to reduce these “weight bearing limbs” to help minimise the chance of the branch failing.
[H3] Balance the canopy of a tree
There can be several reasons why a tree may become unbalanced. For example, following storm damage or an area of the tree has died. This can usually be fixed by reducing the overall tree or a specific area, leaving a more natural shape.
[H3] Prevent trees obstructing or damaging buildings or property
Sometimes trees aren’t planted in the best of locations and, for example, there may be branches in close proximity of buildings or even touching. A tree reduction would then allow good clearance between the trees and the building. Another example could be a tree that, in time, has grown to blocked a view or light to the house, so reducing the size of the tree will help resolve this while still keeping the tree at a desired height.
[H3] Time of year
Depending on the species of tree, and how much you wanting the tree size reduced, there is a good and bad time of the year to prune trees. For example, if it’s a non blooming tree, a shrub or a summer blooming tree/shrub, this should be pruned in late winter when the tree is dormant. This will help the tree recover and heal faster, as well as reducing the risk of disease or pest infestation. If you’re considering heavily reducing a tree, it would also be recommended to do so in late winter.
[H3] Prevent trees from interfering with overhead telephone and power lines
A lot of trees in front gardens are usually in close proximity of telephone or power lines. If the tree is in your property, you have a duty of care to monitor this and prevent interference. If you have small low level trees, then regular tree reductions should be carried out to help allow good clearance from the lines. On the other hand, if the tree is large enough, and the canopy is above the lines already, it is possible that the lower branches are interfering with the lines and a branch reduction could be necessary.

There may be several reason why a tree needs to be removed. Whether it's the condition of the tree, the location or even tree type, it's always best to try and look at other options first, such as tree reduction, crown raise or other general pruning. If you’re unsure, please contact us to discuss the best option.If there is no other solution and you decide to remove the tree then there are several different techniques that can be used. Below are some of the options available to remove a tree:
[H3] - Tree fell
The quickest and safest way to remove a tree is to fell the tree from the ground. However, this can only be done if there is sufficient space to do so, for example, enough clearance between tree and surrounding structures, no power or but lines near the tree.
[H3] - Climb, cut and free fall
Another technique used is “section felling” the tree. This is where a qualified climber would access the tree, using a rope and harness, to cut and free fall sections of the tree. The branches will be cut by the climber and thrown down into a designated drop zone. This could be necessary if the tree is in close proximity to a building, garage, or fence but still has a fairly open area to drop the branches in.

[H3] - Rigging and dismantling
This technique for tree removal may be needed if there is a high risk of damaging the tree’s surroundings. For example, the tree may be located between two buildings and there is no safe location to free fall the cut wood/branches. If this is the case, then all wood and branches will be lowered down using one or multiple ropes. This allows full control and reduces any chance of damaging the tree’s surroundings.
[H3] - MEWP (Mobile Elevated Lifting Platform)
It may be that a dead tree is too dangerous to climb or it can’t be felled from the ground. In which case, a MEWP would be necessary for a tree to be removed safely. When carrying out a tree removal with a MEWP, either one or two tree surgeons will go up in the platform and dismantle the tree piece-by-piece.
[H3] - Crane Assisted removal
When a tree is located in a very awkward place, or it is a mature tree, then it is often more cost effective and safer to remove a tree with a crane. This would be carried out by a qualified tree climber, to access the tree and strap the branches or wood to the crane. When ready, the climber will cut the wood and the crane will lift, move and lower the wood to the chosen drop zone. This method of tree removal allows the tree to be dismantled in large sections and carried to a location for it to be processed.

Crown thinning is usually carried out to allow more light to pass through the tree, without affecting the general shape of the tree. This involves removing selective branches from the overall canopy and reducing the density of the canopy. Depending on the species of tree, and the amount the tree has been pruned in the past, there can be a build up of epicormic growth (small wispy growth that usually grows on the main stem of the tree). If this is the case then just removing this growth alone can make a drastic change to the appearance of the tree and the amount of light that passes through the canopy.

[H2] Crown Raising
This would involve removing the lower branches of the tree’s canopy. Crown raising can be done for a number or reasons, whether it’s allowing clearance over highways or footpaths, or allowing more light/sky light to pass under the tree, or even just to help balance the canopy of the tree. This can be very minor work but can make a big difference to the appearance of the tree, as well as the trees surroundings.

Sometimes trees are either planted in the wrong location, or something is built or erected near a tree, which in time becomes an issue due to the natural growth of the tree. When pruning to allow clearance, the least amount of cuts is preferable as this means the shape of the tree isn’t affected as much. It’s also good to do the correct pruning to help influence new growth to grow away for the building or object. BT and power line clearances are usually very common reasons why clearance pruning would be needed.
[H2] Tree Pollarding
This is usually carried out when a tree is too large for the location and just reducing the tree alone isn’t an option. Once a tree has been pollarded, it should then be re-pollarded every 2-3 years depending on the amount of growth. A pollarded tree “goes into shock” and kicks out a large number of small shoots which tend to grown much faster than a tree’s natural growth. This is because the tree goes into survival mode to get as much leaf back out as fast as possible. Due to this rapid growth, the wood and union are both not as strong as the natural tree and this is why it is recommended to re-pollard the tree. Tree pollarding can also be used when a tree appears to be struggling, diseased or in decline, as the tree will go into shock and kick out new potentially healthier growth.
[H2] Fruit tree pruning
It is recommended to stay on top of your fruit trees as this both maintains the health of the tree, as well as helping it provide better fruit. The pruning would involve selective cuts round the tree, or reducing thin and long branches that can potentially snap when the tree is baring fruit. Removing crossing and rubbing branches is recommend as this will reduce any chance of disease. All fruit trees older than 5 years old should ideally be pruned yearly.

Conifers have fast growth and need a lot of attention.We do not claim that trimming hedges is the world hardest job, and with practice, anyone can learn how to trim hedges to perfection. We do claim to do it correctly and to a high standard.It is recommended to do trim your hedges periodically to ensure they don't get out of control.Trimming hedges in spring and then once more in the middle of summer should be enough to keep them in shape and control.
