[H3] Frequently Asked Questions about Oil Boilers

What is an oil boiler?

An oil boiler works in a very similar way to a gas boiler. They comprise of several key components that include a pressure jet burner, a combustion chamber, a water jacket containing both a primary and secondary condensing heat exchanger and a flue system to safely remove the unwanted combustion gases that are produced by the boiler. Oil boilers also need their own fuel supply which will require an oil tank to be installed at the property. Oil boilers generally use kerosene as their primary fuel source but with an ever increasing demand for more sustainable home heating the introduction of biofuels such as HVO is well underway. The fuel used is ignited within the combustion chamber by the pressure jet burner. As the hot combustion gasses rise up through the heat exchangers, they heat the surrounding water within the boiler, and the heated water is then used to heat both the emitters, such as radiators and underfloor heating, and the domestic hot water within the property. Once the combustion gases have passed through the boiler they will enter and pass through the flue system and disperse safely outside of the property.
Oil boilers are categorised as either heat-only boilers, which provide heat into both the space heating and domestic hot water system and require a cylinder to supply the hot water to the property. Or a combination boiler (combi) which provides both heating and hot water direct from the appliance and do not require an additional cylinder. Both are usually available as both internal and external models.

What is a condensing oil boiler and why is it more efficient?

A condensing boiler has second (condensing) heat exchanger where the flue gases are cooled to below their dew point by the water returning from the heating system. This has the effect of condensing the water vapour present in the flue gases, and liberating the heat energy that would otherwise be lost to outside through the flue system.

Regular servicing can deliver a wide range of benefits for your Grant renewable heating system. By booking a product service through Grant UK, you will:
Maintain your Grant product warrantyAnnual servicing is a requirement to preserve your Grant product warranty.
Maximise your system’s efficiencyEven if your Grant product warranty has expired, Grant UK strongly recommend that products are serviced annually to ensure that both the appliance and system are working as efficiently as possible.

Comply with RHI Scheme requirementsIf you are claiming the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), you must ensure that your renewable product is annually serviced by an MCS accredited installer. All of Grant UK’s in-house engineers are MCS accredited so when they service your Grant product, you will be adhering to the RHI Scheme rules enabling you to continue to receive your quarterly payments.
Keep your product maintained by a highly-skilled engineerAll of Grant UK’s engineers are experienced in the field and extensively trained on all of Grant’s renewable product ranges. By choosing Grant UK to service your appliance, your product will be maintained by the company who also manufactured it.
Prolong the lifespan of your Grant productRegular servicing can identify and resolve any issues which could affect your Grant renewable heating system.

[H3] No Complicated Commitments

ServicePlan by Grant is very flexible. There is no need for you as the homeowner to financially commit to a long-term service plan. Instead, you can simply contact Grant UK when your product is due for servicing and book a one-off appointment.
After Grant UK’s engineer has completed the service, you can opt-in to receive a reminder the following year from Grant UK letting you know that your product’s next service is due. There is no pressure to enter into a service plan contract so you keep complete control of maintaining your home’s heating.

We will then arrange for an engineer to service your Grant renewable product at a suitable time. Please note, we recommend that you contact Grant UK a month prior to your product’s annual service due-date to allow for sufficient time to schedule a booking.
