Papé: EARLY LIFE & FOUNDATIONS OF PAPé Papé's legacy began in Oregon's Willamette Valley in 1938, when our founder, E.C. Papé, arrived in Oregon to work alongside his friend at an Allis-Chalmers equipment dealership. Soon after, E.C. purchased his first company and word began to spread. The rest is history. [IMG: Historical Pape Image from 1900-1938] [H4] Henry Papé: A Portland Pioneer E.C.'s father, Henry Papé, apprenticed with his father as a blacksmith in Portland before taking on a position at Willamette Iron Works. After his time at Willamette Iron Works, he advanced to Chief Engineer for several well known river steamers operating throughout the Pacific Northwest. [H4] E.C.'S Early Years After earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State College in 1913, E.C. became an apprentice with Willamette Iron and Steel, advancing to Draftsman and, by WWI, Plant Manager. After providing patrol boats and minesweepers to the US Navy during WWI, the company shifted to logging equipment and steam locomotives. [IMG: Historical Pape Image from 1900-1938] [H4] WILLAMETTE IRON AND STEEL & THE HYSTER MERGER In the mid-1920s, E.C. Papé-by then the President-saw an opportunity for a merger with Ersted Manufacturing (producer of "Hyster" hoists and the forestry equipment from GSCO). The new company named E.C. the Executive VP of Sales. Unfortunately, the timing of the merger couldn't have been worse. The Great Depression set in soon after the merger, and the new company was reabsorbed into ESCO in order to keep it viable. [IMG: 1900-1938] [H4] 1938: PAPÉ'S BEGINNINGS E.C. Papé acquires Slate Tractor, an Allis Chalmers dealership, and starts his own company on the guiding principle of providing consistent, quality customer service. He names the company Farm and Industrial Equipment Company. 1940-1950s [IMG: Historical Pape Image from 1940-195] [H2] 1940-1950 [IMG: Ditch Witch] [H4] WWII AND ITS IMPACT The United States enters WWII after the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Lumber companies and mills began a hiring spree across Oregon to provide timber for the war effort. [H4] DEAN AND ED PAPÉ E.C. and Hazel have two sons, Ed "Eddie" Jr. and Dean. Eddie works with E.C. at the dealership, eventually becoming responsible for Parts. Dean attends Oregon State University. [IMG: Henry Papé At Portland Pioneer] [H4] DEAN AND ED PAPÉ SERVE OVERSEAS Eddie and Dean serve in the European theatre of WWII. Dean serves as 2nd lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers, building bridges to connect key supply routes. Eddie is a Corporal in the infantry landing in Normandy D+3, and earns the Purple Heart. While his sons are serving overseas, E.C. Papé passes away on January 14th, 1945. Dean and Eddie return home in October of that year. [H4] THE NEXT GENERATION While her sons Dean and Eddie are overseas, Hazel Papé runs the dealership. In 1945, Dean and Eddie take over leadership while Hazel remains an active member on the Board into her 90s. 1900-1938 1950-1960s [IMG: Historical Pape Image from 1950-1960] [H2] 1950-1960 [H5] 1952 [H4] PAPÉ EXPANDS IN OREGON Dean and his brother, Eddie, expand the dealership to support their customers in Roseburg and Coos Bay, Oregon. They rename the company Papé Bros Inc. [H5] 1953 [H4] MOVE TOWARD INDUSTRIAL EQUIPMENT In 1953, Allis Chalmers requires their dealers to choose whether they want to represent Allis Chalmers' agricultural equipment or industrial equipment. Dean and Eddie choose the industrial side. [H5] 1955 [H4] BUSINESS IS BOOMING Papé Bros is honored by Allis Chalmers for setting a record dollar volume of new tractor sales in the Pacific Northwest. [H5] 1956 [H4] PAPÉ ACQUIRES CATERPILLAR DEALERSHIP Papé shifts its manufacturing relationship from Allis Chalmers to Caterpillar after purchasing a Caterpillar dealership in their established territory. 1940-1950s 1960-1970s Rubber Tire skidders: Papé provides rubber-tired skidders to the NW Timber Industry. [H2] 1960-1970 [H4] A CHANGING INDUSTRY As better equipment made timber harvesters more effective, Oregon contractors experience a boom in the demand for work with the construction of 1-5 and the Cougar Reservoir. [H5] 1965 [H4] DEAN AND ED INTRODUCE A NEW ERA Dean and Eddie Papé introduce the era of the rubber-tired skidder to the Northwest Timber Industry during the late 60s. 1950-1960s 1970-1980s [IMG: Historical Pape Image from 1970-1980] [H2] 1970-1980 [H5] 1970 [H4] PAPÉ EXPANDS IN EASTERN OREGON Dean Papé purchases Crater Lake Machinery, expanding the Papé dealership East to Redmond, Medford, and Klamath Falls. [H5] 1973-1974 [H4] ECONOMIC HARDSHIP HITS THE COUNTRY The Vietnam War, which did not end until 1975, leads to inflation and unrest. The 1973-74 Oil Embargo pushes oil prices to record highs, leaving the economy in a tumultuous state. Despite that, Papé pushes forward. [H5] MID 1970'S [H4] PAPÉ DESIGNS AND MODIFIES THREE MACHINES FOR THE LOGGING INDUSTRY In the mid-1970s, Papé modifies a Caterpillar 235 Excavator into the very first Caterpillar Log Loader. In the late 1970s, Papé converts a Caterpillar 988B into the first single-pass CAT Wheel Log Loader. In 1978, Papé modifies a Caterpillar 245 Excavator, capable of forwarding whole trees. This development creates an entirely new method of logging in the Cascades, now known as Shovel Logging. [H4] THE PAPÉ FAMILY EXPANDS Randy Papé, Dean's son, graduates from the University of Oregon in 1973 and marries Susie Yancey in 1974. They have three children: Ryan, Christian, and Jordan. 1960-1970s 1980-1990s \ [IMG: Historical Pape Image from 1980-1990] [H2] 1980-1990 [H4] ECONOMIC STAGNATION AND RECESSION The early 1980s are marked by a massive recession as a result of the Stagflation of the late 1970s. In Oregon, the recession in the early 80s leads to layoffs. Dean passes the reins to Randy, who is determined to diversify the business. [H5] 1981 [H4] THE THIRD GENERATION Randy Papé, Dean's son, becomes Papé's President, marking the third generation of Papé operators. Before he became President, Randy held the positions of Vice President and Assistant Treasurer. Dean Papé became Chairman, and asks everyone to call him T.O.M., "The Old Man." [H5] 1986 [H4] PAPÉ'S CONTINUED EXPANSION THROUGH FLIGHTCRAFT Papé expands its business through the purchase of Flightcraft, a full service FBO and Beechcraft dealer. 1970-1980s 1990-2000s [IMG: Historical Pape Image from 1990-2000] [H2] 1990-2000 [H5] 1990 [H4] THE PAPÉ GROUP IS FORMED The Papé Group is formed as Papé prepares to purchase Hyster dealerships in Oregon and Washington. Your Diagnosis
Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.
Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)
These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.
Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.
Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.
Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.
Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.
Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.
Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.
Based on 2033 businesses audited.
Papé has 10.4 points less BS than the average for Industrial, Manufacturing & Engineering.
Industrial, Manufacturing & Engineering BS: Papé (pape.com)
Papé is a high-substance legacy business currently wrapped in a thin layer of modern corporate fluff. The core of the site is built on decades of forensic business evidence, though it suffers from sloppy proofreading regarding its location counts and a reliance on the ‘End-to-End’ buzzphrase. It is an authority in its space, but the marketing layer is starting to drift from the operational reality.
Immediately audit and synchronize the location counts across the meta data (66), body text (140), and homepage (160) to eliminate the most glaring BS signal. Replace the generic ‘End-to-End Solutions’ H1 with a brand-specific value prop that highlights the multi-brand exclusivity of their portfolio. Add outbound links to third-party review platforms to verify the ‘review_count’ metrics displayed. Include specific tolerance or uptime percentages in the ‘Superior Service’ sections to move from generic claims to technical substance.
The website perfectly aligns with the Industrial and Capital Equipment category, specifically as a multi-brand dealership network. The content confirms this through extensive references to specific machinery brands like John Deere, Kenworth, Hyster, and Ditch Witch, alongside technical service categories like service bays and technicians.
“The score of 29 is primarily driven by the high specificity of the company timeline and the abundance of hard numbers (technicians, bays, locations), which offsets the generic heading fluff. The score was penalized for the internal contradiction in location counts (Semantic Coherence) and the lack of external proof paths for customer reviews (Trust and Proof). Overall, the site demonstrates high authority and low total bullshit.”
