[H2] M VS MX - WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

[H3] Primary Differences:

Servos vs steppers for axes drive motors with the rapids and cutting speeds difference therein.
BT30 vs TTS spindle and toolholder.
Rigid tapping with an encoded spindle vs threadmilling or tapping head.

[H3] Speed:

The PCNC and M series machines can achieve rapid speeds of 110-135 inches per minute (IPM).
The MX machines can reach up to 300 IPM rapid speeds.
Generally, MX machines have 20% faster cycle times, though this varies based on tool path and part geometry.

[H3] Motion Control:

M-line machines do not have positional feedback which means the controller assumes that when it tells an axis to move, that motor did in fact move the designated amount.
MX-line machines add a positional feedback loop so the controller gets confirmation that commanded axis moves are correct or receives an error if something like a collision occurs.

[H3] Spindle:

The MX machines have an encoded spindle. The controller tracks spindle rotation which allows for rigid tapping.
BT30: the MX machines have a BT30 spindle and tool holder which is an industry standard tapered tool holder with a 45 degree pull stud and drive dogs. This combination allows for a more rigid connection between the spindle and the tool and reducing the risk of tool pull out.
TTS: the PCNC and M machines have an R8 collet in the spindle and use the TTS tool holders. This is a 3/4" straight shank tool holder that is proprietary to Tormach.
Note: The PCNC 440 has a non-reversible spindle.

[H3] M vs MX - What Is The Difference?

SPEED: Rapid Speeds - 1100MX and 770MX boast 300 inches per minute (IPM) rapid speeds, while PCNC and M series machines boast rapid speeds of 110-135 (IPM).
Cycle Times - Generally speaking, the MX machines have 20% faster cycle times (varies based on tool path and part geometry).

MOTION CONTROL: Stepper Drive Motors - Stepper motors have no positional feedback loop. When the controller tells an axis to move, it’s assumed the motor in fact moves that much. The only time you are in real danger of losing position with a stepper motor in our machines is if you crash or stall your machine.
Servo Drive Motors - Servo motors provide positional feedback. When the controller calls for an axis to move, then the motor sends positional feedback, verifying it’s where it should be. This allows for crash detection, much higher rapid speeds and more accurate homing. See machine specs for the speed capabilities of each machine.

SPINDLE:BT30 - MX machines have a BT30 spindle, which is an industry-standard tapered tool holder with a 45 degree pull stud and drive dogs. This combination allows for a more rigid connection between the spindle and the tool and reducing the risk of tool pull-out. In addition, this is an encoded spindle, giving the controller awareness of position, allowing for rigid tapping.
TTS - PCNC and M machines have an R8 collet in the spindle and use TTS tool holders. This is a 3/4” straight shank tool holder that is proprietary to Tormach.

[H3] Domenic Giunta

Domenic Giunta has spent over 15 years in Technology Education, helping students and schools embrace hands-on learning through makerspaces and advanced manufacturing. He opened one of the first community makerspaces in New Orleans in 2010, and by 2015 had transitioned to consulting with schools across the country—guiding them in planning, equipping, and training for their own maker spaces.
A former classroom teacher in Hydaburg, Alaska, Domenic brings deep experience in both rural and urban education. He holds a B.S. in Marketing from the University of South Florida and an MBA from Louisiana Tech University.
Beyond education, Domenic is passionate about aviation. He teaches classes in aerodynamics and CNC machining through the Alaska Airmen Association, blending his love for flight with his expertise in fabrication and innovation.

Rob Funk has spent 24 years teaching at the middle school level, with 16 years devoted to science education and the past 8 years leading an Innovation & Design Lab (Fab Lab). His classrooms thrive on inquiry-based science and problem-based learning, where students rediscover the value of hands-on building skills.
Rob’s own foundation in craftsmanship began in junior high “shop classes,” where he learned woodworking, welding, drafting, and small-engine repair—alongside training in art and music that shaped his creativity. Today, he continues to build custom furniture, wood-strip canoes, and stand-up paddle boards, while also self-teaching advanced CAD and CAM processes.
Driven by a belief that making and thinking go hand in hand, Rob blends science, technology, and craftsmanship to inspire the next generation of learners and builders.
