The strange edges of reality are explored in M John Harrison's extraordinary cult classic, now with an introduction by bestselling author Julia Armfield

The cult classic novel from the author of Climbers and The Sunken Land Begins to Rise Again
With an introduction by bestselling author of Our Wives Under the Sea, Julia Armfield
'A more grown-up version of The Secret History' LUCY SCHOLES'A groundbreaking work' GUARDIAN 'The best literary fiction out now' DAILY MAIL 'Gloriously intelligent and beautifully written' INDEPENDENT
On a hot May night, three Cambridge students carry out a ritualistic act that changes their lives. Decades later, none of the participants can remember what transpired; but their clouded memories bind them together. Unable to move on, Pam Stuyvesant has epilepsy and is plagued by sensual visions. Her husband Lucas believes that a dwarfish creature is stalking him, and invents histories to soothe Pam's fears. Self-styled Sorcerer Yaxley becomes obsessed with a terrifyingly transcendent reality. The narrator is seemingly the least effected participant in the ritual: he is haunted by the smell of roses, and his guilt as he attempts to help his friends escape the torment that has engulfed their lives.
Strange, dreamlike and moving, The Course of the Heart is an examination of the edges of humanity where we lie, hide, hurt and heal.

Centuries ago, the myths say, the holy river Saraswati flowed through what is now Northern India. But when Satnam arrives in his ancestral village for his grandmother's funeral, he is astonished to find water in the long-dry well behind her house. The discovery sets in motion a contentious scheme to unearth the lost river and build a gleaming new city on its banks, and Satnam - adrift from his job, girlfriend and flat back in London - soon finds himself swept up in this ferment of Hindu nationalist pride.
As the river alters Satnam's course, so it reveals buried ties to six distant relatives scattered across the globe - from an ambitious writer with her eye on legacy to a Kenyan archaeologist to a Bollywood stunt double - who are brought together in a rapidly changing India. Brimming with love, lush, violence and loss, Gurnaik Johal's magisterial debut deftly animates the passions that bind us to our histories, our lands and each other.

When the waters of the Saraswati, a river of legend, start to rise in a corner of northern India, seven scattered descendants of a forbidden marriage are unexpectedly swept up in its current.
Satnam, adrift from his life in London, is drawn into a contentious scheme to restore the river. Nathu, an archaeologist, ventures from Nairobi to a dig site that might reveal artefacts of a lost civilisation. And elsewhere in former lands of empire - in Singapore, Canada, Mauritius and Pakistan - the ripples are felt across generations. Gurnaik Johal's panoramic debut deftly animates the passions that bind us to our histories and each other.

SUB-PAGE (https://serpentstail.com/about-serpents-tail/) About Serpent's Tail – Serpent's Tail
Pete Ayrton founded Serpent’s Tail in 1986 with a mission to introduce British readers to risk-taking world literature no one else in the UK was publishing. The list established a reputation for its diversity of voice and fearlessness, publishing writers of colour from all over the world including Langston Hughes, Ernest J Gaines, Nella Larsen, Walter Mosley, Alain Mabanckou and Lola Shoneyin, and LGBT authors including Virginie Despentes, Jayne County and Neil Bartlett. Serpent’s Tail launched the careers of major authors such as David Peace, Michel Houellebecq and Colm Tóibín, and turned the transgressive books The Sexual Life of Catherine M by Catherine Millet and We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver into bestsellers.
After two decades of independence, in 2007 Serpent’s Tail joined Profile Books, also independent, where it continues as an imprint that celebrates originality. What makes a Serpent’s Tail book? A Serpent’s Tail book will challenge you, entertain you, tell you something about the world, provoke change and leave you hungry for more.  We publish writers who dare to think originally and help us look at the world anew. Whether their books make the past feel immediate, or illuminate the present, are subtly devastating, politically urgent, or laugh out loud funny –they always have something important to say.
Over the years we have published winners of the Nobel and Orange  prizes, and many Booker and Booker International Prize shortlisted novels. Our bestselling authors include Sarah Perry, whose novel The Essex Serpent won the Waterstones Book of the Year 2016, and the British Book Awards Book of the Year 2017, Esi Edugyan, who has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize twice for her novels Half Blood Blues and Washington Black, Karen Joy Fowler, whose novel We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and has sold over one million copies, as well as Mary Gaitskill, Susan Choi, Jami Attenberg, Attica Locke, Carmen Maria Machado, Saidiya Hartman, Ruby Tandoh and many more.
Our Serpent’s Tail  Classics  series is a growing selection of international literary and cult masterpieces and includes works by Langston Hughes, Eileen Myles, Chester Himes, Albertine Sarrazin, Elfriede Jelinek, Juan Rulfo, Robert Walser and Herve Guibert.
Since 2014, Serpent’s Tail has been the home of boutique list Tuskar Rock Press, editorially selected by Colm Tóibín and Peter Straus. In 2015, László Krasznahorkai won the Man Booker International Prize and in that same year Chris Kraus’ cult book I Love Dick became a bestseller almost twenty years after it was first published. In 2018, novels by Antonio Munoz Molina and László Krasnahorkhai were shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize. Other Tuskar Rock Press authors include Joy Williams, Casey Gerald, Joanna Walsh and Kirstin Valdez Quade.
More than three decades on, we hold true to our founding principles. We are passionate about finding and championing books that excite us creatively, by talented writers who don’t just break but smash the mould with work that opens up space for readers to think, and live, differently.

Your Diagnosis

Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.

Information Density 0 / 30
Read the Narrative & headings: do hard facts (prices, dates, numbers) outweigh fluff power-words?
Semantic Coherence 0 / 20
Compare the homepage promise against the sub-page reality. Do they hold the same line?
Trust & Proof 0 / 20
Weigh review mentions against actual external proof links. Claims without verification = theatre.
Commodity Fingerprint 0 / 15
Check headings & narrative against the industry clichés in the setup above.
Identity & Authority 0 / 15
Inspect the schema: is there real Organization/Person identity with sameAs links, or gaps?
Your predicted BS score 0 / 100
💡 Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)

These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.

Information Density

Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.

Semantic Alignment

Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.

Trust & Proof

Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.

Commodity Fingerprint

Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.

Identity & Authority

Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.

Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

Media, News & Publishing BS: Serpent's Tail (serpentstail.com)

https://serpentstail.com 📍 Industry: Media, News & Publishing
11 BS / 100

Serpent’s Tail is a rare example of a site where the product actually exceeds the marketing claims. It functions as a functional catalog of literary achievement rather than a lead-generation fluff machine. Its only ‘bullshit’ is the standard promotional varnish expected of any commercial publisher.

Add an ‘Our Team’ section to provide human transparency for the current editorial board. Link the ‘one million copies’ sales claims to third-party industry trackers or press releases to provide an external proof path. Implement Person schema for the authors on their specific work pages to bridge the gap between product and authority footprint. Include a formal editorial standards or ethics policy link in the footer to meet the highest industry transparency requirements.

The site represents a book publisher, which is a significant sub-sector of the Media and Publishing industry. While it does not provide daily news, it adheres to publishing standards and follows the template fingerprints for About Us and Newsletter segments found in the industry dictionary.

“The score of 11 reflects a very low level of BS, driven primarily by minor industry clichés and the lack of a modern masthead. The trust and proof score (3) is the largest contributor simply because book sales claims and blurb counts lack direct third-party verification links. Commodity fingerprints (4) are present but are standard for the publishing industry.”
