[H1] About us
The Vanderbilt Hustler is a student organization and a news source for Vanderbilt University. The Hustler’s content is divided into nine sections, each run by student editors and staffed by Vanderbilt students. The Hustler also maintains an active social media presence. All Hustler content relates in some way to Vanderbilt and its community.
[H2] Sections
[H6] News
The News section reports on information about university changes, announcements, initiatives and on-campus events, focusing on their effects on the Vanderbilt community. The News staff also covers local, state and national happenings in relation to the Vanderbilt community. The News staff maintains close connections with campus leaders, including administration, student government and other faculty and staff members.
[H6] Life
The Life section provides readers with updates on campus and local entertainment, music, fashion, food and culture. The Life section offers an inclusive look at student life, granting readers unique insight into exploring Vanderbilt’s campus and Nashville.
[H6] Sports
The Sports section provides comprehensive coverage and analysis of Vanderbilt varsity sports teams and administration and tells the stories of Vanderbilt student-athletes. Hosted weekly by Sports editors, Live From West End is a podcast that runs on exclusive interviews with coaches, administrators, student-athletes and alumni. The Sports section also records ‘Dores Unlocked, a weekly debate show.
[H6] Opinion
The Opinion section is a platform for students to express their views, reactions and suggestions. Opinion articles take stances on issues affecting the Vanderbilt community and college students more broadly. The Opinion staff analyzes campus, local and national affairs and offers their input in a concise, constructive manner. The Opinion section provides a student forum for political, social and individual commentary.
[H6] Photography
The Photography staff seeks to report on Vanderbilt happenings through visually compelling mediums. Staffers utilize photography to cover events and tell stories. The Photography section maintains close relations with Vanderbilt Athletics and local music and performing venues to do so. The section also works closely with the Life and News sections to cover concerts and events within the greater Nashville and campus community. [H6] Podcasts
The Hustler produces a series of podcasts online and via Spotify. The mission of the Podcasts section is to share the stories of the Vanderbilt community in a relatable, unfiltered and genuine way. Every week, our podcasters share insightful tidbits about their lives, ranging from academic advice to research projects, through conversations with their peers and mentors. Our podcasts span a variety of styles ranging from NPR-style investigative journalism to roundtable discussions to one-on-one interviews.
[H6] Data
The Data section works to produce data-intensive, investigative stories that don’t necessarily fall under the realm of the other sections. It also produces biannual surveys on the Vanderbilt student population. Working with Graphics staffers, the Data section additionally creates data visualizations for Hustler content.
[H6] Graphics
The Graphics section creates graphic art, illustrations, infographics and data visualizations to enhance stories. Graphics staffers work closely with reporters to bring stories to life.
[H6] Games
The Games section creates mini crossword puzzles relevant to the season or life on campus. Other games, such as the jigsaw, are being beta tested to create more engagment around photos taken by staff photographers.
[H2] Our history
The Hustler began as a weekly campus newspaper in 1888 and is the oldest newspaper in Tennessee. “Published without faculty approval or review, the newspaper was sharp, critical, deliberately controversial,” Paul Conkin said of the paper in his 1985 book “Gone With the Ivy: A Biography of Vanderbilt University.” “It aired issues on all sides, freely criticized faculty and the board, entered enthusiastically the debate over McTyeire’s successor, and was a sounding board for student complaints.”
In 1967, the paper came under the control of Vanderbilt Student Communications (VSC), an organization independent of Vanderbilt University but housed on campus. In 1998, The Hustler became financially independent from Vanderbilt University by declining activities fee subsidies. The publication currently remains a division of VSC.
As a way to ensure that Vanderbilt stayed on top of the shift to online media and news and remained a leader in the student media industry, VSC decided in 2006 to move Vanderbilt’s student media toward a digital delivery model. The result was InsideVandy.com, an online campus news source. At the time, The Hustler solely published print editions.
In 2014, leaders of The Hustler and InsideVandy decided to merge in favor of the best interest of Vanderbilt Student Communications. The VSC Board approved the proposal, and InsideVandy.com became vanderbilthustler.com in Fall 2015.
Following the 2015-16 school year, the VSC Board, with support from the Hustler staff, voted to move The Hustler solely online. The decision sought to allow for a greater focus on content production and technological advancement while following in the direction that journalism was headed.
The Hustler’s first header graphic was designed by Jessica Mo. In the summer of 2022, The Hustler underwent a brand change. The current Hustler logo and brand was designed by Alexa White, Rachael Perrotta and Katherine Oung.
In Fall 2021, The Hustler began exploring new areas of multimedia journalism and welcomed its first podcast. A Podcasts section was then created in 2022, along with a Data section.
The Hustler staff works alongside other student media leaders in the Sarratt Student Center.

[H2] Email communications
The Vanderbilt Hustler Digest is emailed to subscribers each Monday morning during the academic year and periodically during academic breaks. Each Digest includes a collection of stories published each week from different sections of The Hustler, as well as six “Photos of the Week.” These stories are also highlighted on our social media on Monday mornings. The Sports Report is emailed to subscribers each Friday morning during the academic year and periodically during academic breaks. Each Sports Report includes a collection of stories published each week by the Sports section of The Hustler, as well as six sports “Photos of the Week.” These stories are also highlighted on our social media on Friday mornings. [H2] Staff Editorials
The Hustler periodically composes staff editorials to represent the views of the entire Editorial Board. As such, a majority of the Editorial Board approves the final version of staff editorials before it is published. Editorial topics are often proposed by the Editorial Director but also may be suggested by staff writers or other editors. Editorials cover a range of topics, from Vanderbilt news to culture to politics.

All Vanderbilt students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty, staff and other community members are encouraged to submit guest columns and Letters to the Editor for review and possible publication. [H3] Policies & guidelines
We welcome guest submissions from members of the Vanderbilt community who are not on The Hustler’s staff. We do not allow non-Vanderbilt-related submissions.
We reserve the right to edit submissions, determine whether to publish guest submissions based on our discretion and decide the publication timeline for submissions. Submission of a guest article does not guarantee publication.
The publication of guest submissions doesn’t reflect the opinions or beliefs of The Hustler or its affiliates, only the views of the author(s).
Guest columns: Guest columns must focus on making an argument about Vanderbilt in some way. We prefer guest columns to remain at no more than 1,000 words.
Letters to the Editor (LTE): Letters to the Editor are more brief responses to a news or opinion piece recently published in The Hustler. We recommend that these remain under 250 words. They must relate to a particular piece published in The Hustler and must be submitted within a week of the publication of the piece to which they react or respond. At the discretion of the Editorial Director and Editor-in-Chief, letters to the editor may be published in groups.
Guest columns and LTE may be eligible for anonymous/pseudonym publishing in cases of threats to the author’s safety and/or health privacy. These will follow anonymity guidelines for The Hustler and will be applied at the discretion of the editorial team.
[H3] What to expect after submitting
Submitting a guest article does not guarantee publication. Timelines of publication may vary and are not guaranteed to follow a guest writer’s request.
The Hustler may work with a writer to create graphics, photos or data visualizations to accompany their piece.
Guest submissions will undergo an editing process, just as any other opinion pieces published in The Hustler. Please be patient with the editing process and open to collaboration with the editorial team.

[H1] Policies
The Vanderbilt Hustler’s policies regarding comment sections, anonymity, content, photo use, advertisements, corrections and updates are as follows:
[H4] Comment sections policy
The Hustler welcomes and encourages readers to engage with content and express opinions through the comment sections on our website and social media platforms. The Hustler reserves the right to block users or remove comments that contain vulgarity, hate speech, inaccurate information and/or personal attacks, or those that appear to be spam, commercial promotion or impersonation, including those submitted using a fabricated or unverified email or display name. The comment sections are moderated by our Editor-in-Chief, Corey Lochan, and our Social Media Director, Annie McGuire. You can reach them at [email protected] and [email protected].
[H4] Anonymity policy
The Hustler anonymity policy for sources and authors follows the AP standard for anonymity, and requests for anonymity will only be granted if they fall under this standard. The Hustler reserves the right to grant anonymity on a case-by-case basis. A request for anonymity does not guarantee anonymity. The identity of anonymous individuals must be known to the editor of the section in which their quotes or writing will appear and our Editor-in-Chief, Corey Lochan.
Requests for anonymity that have been granted historically include but are not limited to those related to FERPA, HIPAA and Title IX regulations, members of the LGBTQ+ community whose gender/sexual identity is revealed but who are not out and individuals who would face legal, academic or professional repercussions for having their name attached to a piece.
[H4] Content policy
Vanderbilt Student Communications (VSC) does not allow the removal of content, including but not limited to author and source names, parts of articles or quotes, articles, and photos, from online archives of its divisions once it has been published in any format. The Hustler reserves the right to determine its content to align with its mission, goals and audience. The focus of and information included in our articles is ultimately our journalistic decision. We welcome pitches from the community.
[H4] Photo use policy
The Vanderbilt Hustler does not allow staff members to release photos taken on assignment for The Hustler other than those published in coverage. Anyone wishing to use Hustler photographs that have been published in Hustler coverage for non-Hustler uses must gain permission from the individual photographer via contract before doing so. After gaining permission and signing a usage contract, users of Hustler photographs for non-Hustler purposes must credit both the photographer and The Hustler when using the photos, ideally in the following format: “Photo by [PHOTOGRAPHER]/The Vanderbilt Hustler” or the format outlined in the agreed-upon contract. Failure to uphold this policy will bar users from gaining permission to use published Hustler photos for non-Hustler uses in the future and could lead to punitive action by the photographer as outlined in the contract.
[H4] Advertisements
The Vanderbilt Hustler does not publish advertisements of any kind except for occasional promotions for other VSC organizations. The only guest posts that are permitted are guest editorials and Letters to the Editor, which must be written by individual(s) affiliated with the Vanderbilt community.
[H4] Corrections and updates
Occasionally, corrections and updates will be made to pieces that contain either inaccurate or misrepresented information or for which additional, relevant information has been obtained post-publication, respectively. The Hustler works to minimize errors in publication and to issue corrections promptly. Corrected articles can be viewed here.
