The Aqua Explorer Rock Pool Experience brings a living, breathing rock pool into the classroom.  It’s an innovative, interactive learning experience delivered by our knowledgeable and enthusiastic Marine Rangers, who have a real passion for marine biology, ecosystems and conservation.  Students (staff too!!) will be fully engaged from the get-go.  What could be more exciting than touching a starfish or holding a crab!   There are a wide range resources available, linking into key areas of the National Curriculum to further enhance learning.
Our rock pool experience has been greatly received within care homes, bringing back nostalgic days spent by the sea, particularly for those living with dementia.  It has helped them to reminisce and start conversations, creating a wonderful day for all involved.

Aquariums are increasingly recognised for their positive impact on wellbeing and their therapeutic effects on individuals.  There have been many studies and evidence-based research to back this up.
Watching fish swim can help to reduce heart rate by as much 3% in ten minutes and blood pressure too, whilst lowering cortisol levels, helping to relieve stress and anxiety.  Fish tanks act as a mindfulness aid and help to boost mood.  Watching the comings and goings within an aquarium and feeling at one with nature promotes a sense of peace and tranquillity, helping to reduce feelings of stress and depression.

[H3] Let The Fun Begin!
Our Marine Rangers will have the rock pool/s set up and ready for when your students arrive.  They will introduce themselves, the rock pool inhabitants and how rock pools are formed, encouraging all involved to talk about their experience of visits to the coast.
Together, with resources that staff can download, students will learn in more detail about each animal and how they have adapted to live in their amazing habitat.  A key focus will be on the conservation of our oceans, seas and waterways and key discussions on what we can do to help.
Students are split into smaller groups, enabling them to come up to the aquarium, observe, touch and even hold these wonderful creatures.  The other groups will be just as entertained, taking part in discussions, completing activity sheets and looking at the artefacts provided.
There will be lots of opportunities to ask questions too!!

Research has shown that aquariums offer a number of positive benefits, that’s right, watching fish swim helps us to calm down and relax.

According to studies, aquarium therapy helped to reduce an individual’s heart rate by as much as 3% in ten minutes.  Watching the fish glide effortlessly through water, observing the soft bubbling of water, plants swaying in the current and the gentle flow of aquatic life all create a meditative atmosphere.  This led to the individual feeling calmer and more relaxed, leading experts to believe that aquarium therapy could massively help those who suffer with depression, anxiety and panic disorders.
Watching the comings and goings within an aquarium has proven to lower blood pressure by as much as 4%.  Confirming that a fish tank within a GP surgery or dental waiting room could be extremely beneficial at lowering anxiety and stress levels of patients.

As highlighted in our Aquarium Therapy: A Natural way To Keep The Stresses At Bay blog article, more children than ever before are experiencing stress, anxiety and depression.  According to the Mental Health Foundation, nearly one in 10 children and young people aged 5-16 are affected by a mental health problem.  With reduced levels of quality family time being one of the main reasons due to the digital age that we now live in.
An aquarium is a practical and therapeutic way of creating calm and relaxing environments within a school reception, sensory room or classroom as they encourage mindfulness, helping individuals feel more grounded and present.  The feeding of the fish also fosters responsibility, routine and a connection with nature.  All of which contribute to emotional balance and mental clarity.
Care homes who have leased one of our aquariums have seen significant benefits to their residents, particularly those living with dementia. Most importantly the benefits the fish tank has given to the residents living with dementia. We have found it a useful tool in de escalating distressed reactions in residents as well as a therapeutic calming effect on those who just want to sit and watch the fish.
