Established in 1989 by equine vet John C Gilliver, our ambulatory and first opinion equine practice in Anderton aims to be the number one choice for equine clients in the Chorley and Lancashire regions.
The son of a dairy farmer, John developed a passion for horses early in life. He started riding at the age of six, and was breeding ponies by the time he was 14!
This longrunning love of horses is shared by his fellow team members, who intend to provide the highest standards of service possible and deliver compassionate, high quality veterinary services.
The practice has achieved an RCVS “outstanding” level in their ambulatory and client service awards, and we offer a 24/7 ambulatory service for emergencies and a wide range of mobile services.

We’re a BEVA approved practice for artificial insemination using frozen and chilled semen, with facilities onsite for storing frozen semen.
Our premises hold extensive facilities, including onsite stabling, a reproduction building, a laboratory, a dedicated JMB measuring room, a treatment room with stocks and large inpatient stables with CCTV monitoring.
We’ve got a dedicated trot up area, an outdoor arena and a weighbridge in practice for clients, should you want to monitor your horse’s weight.
We can carry out full diagnostic and lameness investigation procedures, including remedial farriery, and are well-equipped to perform routine and complex dental procedures. We are also regularly visited by the Equine Dental Clinic in Dorset.
Our team also has access to digital radiography, ultrasound, class IV laser and shockwave equipment.
Our love of equine veterinary care extends beyond our practice and mobile work, as we love getting involved with our local equine community.

We regularly hold client evenings, sponsor local riding clubs and country shows, have a stand at STARS Championships and attend events like Aintree and Bold Heath as the designated vets on call.

John Gilliver

[H4] Clinical Director and Veterinary Surgeon

BVSc MRCVS

John grew up on a dairy farm in Worsley and graduated from Liverpool University in 1980, after which he worked at large animal and mixed practices in Yorkshire and Bolton, before creating Gillivervet in 1989. His clinical interests include breeding work, pre-purchase examinations, riding school inspections and JMB measurements. He is also a panel judge, and enjoys riding, trail hunting and cycling in his free time.

Alison Swift

[H4] Clinical Director and Veterinary Surgeon

Alison first joined our practice shortly after graduating from Liverpool University in 2006, and returned in 2010 after a few years away. She enjoys all aspects of equine clinical work, but has a particular interest in stud medicine and scanning. Outside of work, she loves spending time with family and taking care of her horses and dog.

Kathleen Hennessy

Kathleen has been part of our team since 2015. She has a passion for equine dentistry, having completed advanced veterinary practice certificate modules in the field, and loves getting to build bonds with her clients and patients. When she’s not at work, she enjoys training her dogs, walking, cooking, reading and socialising.

Julie Best

[H4] Practice Manager

Julie has been a client of ours since we first opened in 1989, and joined our team in 2005, having previously worked in finance for a number of years. She has one dog called Teasel, and spends much of her spare time helping her daughter look after her ponies.

Rachel Schneiders

Rachel graduated from Liverpool University in 2015, where she received the Zoetis prize for excellence in equine studies. She joined us in 2018, and has a passion for orthopaedics and equine lameness, which she holds an advanced veterinary practice certificate in. Her hobbies include running, swimming, mountain biking, reading and taking care of her cats.

Joe joined the team in 2020, shortly after graduating from Liverpool University. He is an official veterinarian and enjoys all aspects of equine veterinary practice, but has a particular interest in reproduction, having spent a stud season in New Zealand. At home, he has a horse and a small flock of sheep.

Faye graduated from The University of Edinburgh in 2023, and joined our team a few months later. She has a dog called Monroe, and finds equine internal medicine particularly interesting. In her spare time, she likes to keep active by going to the gym, running and hiking.

Bryony Fossett

Bryony joined the team shortly after graduating from the University of Surrey in 2023, and has a keen interest in equine reproduction and internal medicine. She has bred and shown dogs her whole life, and has three dogs called Polly, Dollar and Peggy. When she’s not working, she loves exploring the countryside and climbing mountains with her dogs.

Vicky has been with us since 2022, and previously worked in sales support for BT Business and as a riding instructor. She enjoys handling and taking care of our inpatients, and has two ponies of her own. In her spare time, she likes getting together with friends, be that for a walk or a trip out, and taking her ponies for rides or to shows.

Hollie Carline

Hollie worked at Knowsley Safari Park before joining our practice in 2020, and has two cats and a horse of her own. Her favourite part of her job is getting to develop her equine nursing knowledge and skills, and she has passion for equine theatre nursing and anaesthesia. Her hobbies include eventing, riding, grooming and spending time with her family.

Sammy joined us in 2021 as a yard team member, and is working towards qualifying as a registered equine veterinary nurse. She has a soft spot for lambs and has two horses, Molly and Sparky, who she is keen to take eventing.

Christine Cotton

[H4] Office Manager

Christine worked in sales and finance before joining our team in 2015. She works closely with our senior vets, and manages their diaries and communication between departments. She has a dog called Beanie and Custard her daughters pony. She also spends much of her spare time competing at horse shows with her family, shopping, eating out and catching up with friends.

Before joining our team in 2019, Carly worked at Specsavers. She loves that everyday is different at our practice, as well as getting to work with our lovely team and clients. In her own time, she enjoys taking care of her cat, Willow, and walking her dog, Reggie.

[H4] Yard Supervisor

Hazell joined us in 2010, having previously worked in the mental health field with young adults.  Her favourite parts of her job are looking after inpatients, overseeing the running of the yard and training new yard team members. She has a dog called Suzie and enjoys walking, going to gigs and music festivals and socialising with friends.

[H4] Stud work

We’re a BEVA approved veterinary centre for AI and offer stud packages for fresh, chilled and frozen semen, routine and specialised stud work and CCTV monitoring.

[H4] Lameness and poor performance investigations

We have comprehensive investigation facilities for lameness workups, including a hard trot up area, a sand school for lunging and ridden evaluations and comfortable stable boxes.

[H4] Diagnostics

Our team can carry out gastroscopy, endoscopy, digital radiography, mobile x-ray, and orthopaedic, reproductive and abdominal ultrasound.

[H4] Dentistry

We offer routine and advanced equine dental services, if and when further treatment is necessary, and can advise on optimal dental hygiene.

[H4] Standing and general anaesthetic surgical procedures

We’re well equipped to perform standing and GA surgical procedures, including castration, laser sarcoid removal, dental extractions, eye enucleations and castrations.

[H4] Ophthalmology

We offer a wide range of ophthalmology services and eye examinations, from our premises or your yard.

[H4] Wound management

We can provide you with veterinary care to manage wounds and injuries.

[H4] JMB measurements

We offer Joint Measurement Board (JMB) measurements at our premises. Get in touch to learn more.

[H4] Travel Documents & Microchipping

Our team can support you with travel documentation, microchipping, ID sketch and hair DNA samples.  LVI’s available to do Health Papers for Export.

[H4] Vettings and inspections

We offer pre-purchase examinations and vettings for insurance purposes, as well as RCVS riding establishment inspections, donkey inspections and landau licensing.

[H4] Remedial farriery

We hold remedial farriery sessions at the practice on Wednesday mornings. Get in touch for more information.

[H4] Vaccinations

Routine, flu and tetanus vaccinations, as well as vaccinations against other potentially life threatening diseases.

[H4] Skin

We offer skin disease and skin conditions, and offer intradermal skin testing, skin scrapes and tests to diagnose skin issues. If your horse is diagnosed with a skin issue or allergy, we can work with you to develop a suitable treatment plan.

Our premises in Chorley are home to excellent facilities, including digital radiography, ultrasound, class IV therapeutic laser and shockwave equipment, as well as a reproduction building, a laboratory, a mare and foal box and a dedicated JMB measuring room.
Colleagues can also make the most of our office space, meeting room and recreational room.
