[H1] What is separation anxiety?

What is frequently labelled as Separation Anxiety is actually a wide variety of Separation Related Behaviours. Those are behaviours that happen in a greater intensity or only happen when the dog’s owners are absent. They can be described as a real phobia to be left.
There are 3 different kind of Separation Related Behaviours:

Handling arrival and dealing with first nights with serenity

Separation anxiety : the dog is panicking when their person(s) is/are leaving, and won’t settle even if left with someone else

Fear of missing out : when their human(s) is/are leaving, the dogs feels like they are missing out on something fun which generates frustration, and distress in the dog

Dogs are social animals and being separated from their group can be a scary experience. Studies have shown that about 20 % of domestic dogs worldwide struggle when left on their own.
Dogs displaying Separation Related Problems are having real panic attacks when their humans are leaving the house, and can express it in many different ways such as: vocalising , soiling the place despite being potty trained, destructing around the house, attempting to escape, salivating excessively for example. The challenging behaviours you are observing are the symptoms of a real panic state, and they can’t control themselves while facing alone time. This is why the training and support I provide support and training based on empathy, compassion and understanding towards both the dog and their humans.

When we want to share our life with a new paw companion, we never expect to be trapped at home at all times because they can’t be left on their own. Being a parent of a dog with separation anxiety probably makes you feel stressed and frustrated, you are wondering what you did wrong, and why this is happening to you. This is totally normal feelings, it never feels good to come home to find your dog in a total panic, that has made a huge mess.
No matter how serious is your dog’s fear, there is hope for you. I work with science based methods that have proven efficient on hundreds of thousands of dogs all over the world. What I can offer is a careful behaviour modification training program using a technique called desensitization.

Desensitization is a way to gradually expose your dog to being alone, always staying at a level they are comfortable with to re program their brain into accepting they are safe when you are leaving without them. Following that method, they will never experience the fear of being on their own again.

Do I have to do a behavioural consultation before starting a separation anxiety program with you?
It is essential for me to see the whole picture before starting a Separation anxiety training protocol. I also have to determine the origin of the problem and make sure it is the alone time causing issues for your dog, to be able to address it efficiently.

Yes, you do. The method used for Separation Anxiety protocol is based on gradual exposure, meaning always keeping the dog at a level of exposure they can handle, so they will stop seeing it as a scary event later on. If they are left more than they can handle, it will very likely ruin the progress that has been made so far. During the first consultation, management is something we will talk about and I will help you finding solutions. Some solutions won’t even cost any money exist as well.

How long will it take before I can leave my dog alone?

Once again, I am going to tell you it depends on a lot of factors. The rhythm of training, other potential behaviour challenges, general health, medication, the ability to suspend absences, etc… It does take time to modify a being’s emotion towards a situation, and every dog is different.

Once we have started the protocol, will I have to keep working on my own until my dog is fixed?

The packages I offer are intensive training. During those I will teach you how to read your dog’s body language, and how to create/update training plans so after a few month together, you’ll be able to go on your own. I am of course always available for extra support after that.

It would be an understatement to say that dogs and humans speak different languages. We are indeed from different species, and understanding each other communication can be a real challenge.
The language we speak is totally unknown and new to them, and the one they are speaking is often really mysterious for us as well. It takes them an incredible effort to adapt to their new life, and it is our job, as dogs guardians, to help them the best we can by teaching them what is expected of them in a kind, compassionate and respectful way.
The difficulties understanding each other often result in tensions and stress in the household, and that can alter the relationship between humans and dogs.
A challenging dog behaviour is always a way for them to express a malaise or a discomfort. Let’s find the reason of your dog ‘s behaviour together.
Whether your dog is experiencing anxiety, difficulties when left alone, being fearful/aggressive around other animals or humans, destructing everything in your house, overly protecting resources, barking running away, there is a reason for it and I will will help you find it.
During a one hour and a half consultation at your home, I will conduce a deep analysis of the dog’s history, environment, relationships to help you understanding what is going on. Once the cause is found, we’ll start together a program based on achievable and realistic objectives to work on with your dogs. Every program is individual, made to respect yours and your dog’s lifestyle, needs and personality. The program I certified with is based on the will to stick as much as possible to a dog’s true nature to change their behaviour.
I will help you reading your dog's communication and understanding their needs, which will help restoring the peace and harmony in your home. How do you address dog’s challenging behaviour?
To “fix” a problem behaviour, it is essential to find their cause. The solutions I provide are individual for that very reason : 2 dogs with the same behaviour could be doing it for different reasons and the solution will be different as well. Once the cause is found, I can propose adapted protocols that will help your dog feeling better.

How long will it take to fix my dog’s challenging behaviour
Any good dog behaviourist will answer to that with “ it depends”. It does depend, because we are working with living beings and their emotions. Every dog is different, learns differently and reacts differently to emotions. It also depends on the daily work put on the protocol. There are no quick fixes, but one thing I can tell you is that we’ll work on addressing those behaviour in a respectful, force/fear free and understanding way.

Ever since I was a kid, I have always loved being around animals and trying ( without any success) to bring home all the stray dogs I’d meet growing up. It is only later though, when I met my little dog Croquette, that a passion for dog behaviour emerged.
He has always been really nervous for a lot of different reasons, I had to learn everything I could to understand him and train him with methods that would respect his comfort zone. Working with him to improve his wellbeing really strengthened our bond, and made me want to share that with other persons and their furry friends
When I started this journey with little Croquette, I discovered that a lot of principles from human behaviour sciences that I learned while working with kids with autism also apply for our furry friends, especially behaviour modifications. More importantly, I learned that every behaviour happens for a reason, and that it is never too late to work on them no matter the dog’s age, size or breed.
To me, a dog is the human’s best friend, and it is really important for us to act like their best friends as well. Challenging behaviours are a way for the dogs to express something that they are feeling, whether it is a malaise, discomfort, fear, anxiety, pain, etc… As a dog behaviour specialist, I will help you understanding your dogs, their needs and teach you how to listen to what they are trying to tell you.
I certified with Camille Genissel, a french behaviourist/ trainer who developed the Method’EdeN, based on respecting the dog’s true nature, their needs and specificities to propose individualised solutions to every type of behavioural issues.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR CLASSES & 1-2-1 TRAINING
Payment for services constitutes acceptance of these Terms and Conditions.
PAYMENTS, REFUNDS AND CANCELLATIONS:
To confirm your scheduled booking of a training session, payment must be made in full at least 24 hours in advance of the agreed time and date.
If for any reason we need to cancel or reschedule your session, we will aim to provide you with a minimum of 24 hours notice.
If you need to cancel or reschedule, we kindly request that you inform us no later than 24 hours before your scheduled appointment. Failure to do so will result in full payment for the session.
If classes need to be cancelled due to extreme weather (hot/cold/wet) your session will be moved to Zoom, or rescheduled together. We will aim to give you advanced prior notice, but please ensure your contact details are up to date.
Please note, we do not offer refunds, but exceptions may be made at our discretion. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
TRAINING PACKAGES:
All training packages must be completed within a six month period. Any unused sessions after this time will expire. However, we understand that exceptional circumstances may arise, and we may be able to offer a refund or reschedule these sessions upon request. If you have any concerns or questions regarding your training package, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are always here to help and ensure your satisfaction.
1-2-1 & GROUP CLASSES:
We kindly ask you to report any accidents or injuries that may occur during your training sessions to your trainer right away. You and your dog’s safety is of utmost importance, and as an owner, it is your duty to ensure that your dog behaves in a manner that does not pose a threat to other animals or people.
CHILDREN:
We welcome children to attend our training sessions as long as they are accompanied by a responsible adult. It is important to note that we cannot take responsibility for the safety of children during the sessions. We kindly ask that supervising adults ensure that the children are safe at all times. Young people under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
WELFARE:
It is important to ensure that your dog is suitably protected from the potential risk of disease, as well as being appropriately treated for internal and external parasites. While we cannot guarantee that there is absolutely no risk of disease at any venue or when in contact with other dogs or materials, it is the owners/handler’s responsibility to take appropriate measures to protect their dog. Please note that we do not accept responsibility for any potential or actual exposure of dogs to disease.
Please advise us in advance of your session if your dog has been in contact with another dog infected by a contagious disease or if they appear to be unwell (eg. vomiting, diarrhoea, coughing, etc).
If your dog has any known allergies or intolerances to certain foods or has any other special dietary needs, it is your responsibility to bring this to the attention of the trainer prior to the start of your session.
PRIVACY:
Please be aware that photographs may be taken during training sessions. These photos may be used by HARMONY 4 PAWS for use on social media. If you do not want photographs of you and/or your dog to be used or shared, please inform us. Additionally, any feedback you provide, whether verbal or written (such as through email or feedback forms), may be used for marketing purposes. Please note that only your first name will be used for identification purposes.
DISCLAIMER: Please be advised that while we make every effort to ensure the safety of our clients and their dogs during training sessions, participating in activities with dogs, children, and adults inherently carries a risk of injury.
By booking with us, you agree to assume full responsibility for any risks, injuries, or damages that may occur as a result of attending our training sessions
You also agree to make any person who accompanies you to the session(s), or takes your place, aware that they are also there at their own risk.
