Are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Christian?Yes! As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of the World. He loves us all more than we can imagine. We consider ourselves devoted followers of Jesus. While some of our beliefs are distinct, we believe that through His life, ministry, sacrifice, and resurrection, Jesus Christ saves us from sin, suffering, and death.Learn more about our beliefs.What are Church services like?Church service times vary from congregation to congregation. However, you can always count on one main worship service for everyone, followed by classes for children, youth, and adults.The service for everyone is called “sacrament meeting.” This meeting consists of songs, prayers, and sermons (or “talks”) given by different members of the congregation every week. But the most important part of the meeting is when we take the sacrament (which is similar to communion) to remember the Savior.Learn more about Sunday services or find a church near you.Why does The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have temples?For Latter-day Saints, a temple is different from other Church buildings. The temple is a place where Latter-day Saints receive special instruction about God and Jesus Christ. In the temple, members make eternal covenants (or promises) with God. This includes promises to keep the commandments, live the gospel of Jesus Christ, be faithful in marriage, and to help take care of each other by sharing what we have. Also, because we believe families are forever, much of the work done inside temples is to make family bonds even stronger. Marriages in the temple are performed to last eternally, not just “until death do you part.” Parents and children become eternal families in temples. Ancestors can also receive all the blessings of the temple if someone performs the sacred ordinances in their behalf and they accept that act of service. Temples are busy places!What is the Book of Mormon?The Book of Mormon is a book of inspired scripture that teaches us about God and Jesus Christ. It helps us receive direction for our personal lives and can help us feel closer to Jesus Christ. Where does the name come from? Hundreds of years ago, an ancient prophet named Mormon compiled a record of his people. They faced a lot of the same challenges that we do. Are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Christians?

Yes! We believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of the world, and we strive to follow Him. Like many Christian denominations, the specifics of our beliefs vary somewhat from those of our neighbors. But we are devoted followers of Christ and His teachings. The unique and beautiful parts of our theology help deepen our understanding of Jesus and His gospel.

Do you believe in the Bible?

Yes! We believe the Bible is the word of God. We regularly study it in our homes and at church, and we try to live by its teachings. We believe the Old Testament and New Testament work together with the Book of Mormon, which is another testament of Jesus Christ, to act as a witness of Jesus and give us a more complete understanding of God’s plan.

What happens in temples?

Temples are different from our everyday church buildings where we hold Sunday worship services. They are our most holy places, set aside for God’s most sacred work. The things we do in the temple revolve around the promise that we can live with God and our loved ones for eternity. In the temple, we more fully commit to following Jesus Christ. We make promises with God, such as the promise to keep His commandments and to dedicate ourselves and all we have to Him. Husbands and wives and parents and children are united together, or “sealed” to one another, for eternity. And we do the same work for our ancestors, giving them the opportunity to accept those blessings in the next life if they choose.

Would someone like me be welcome at church?

Of course! We believe we are all children of God and His promised blessings are available to all of us as we strive to follow His word, no matter our characteristics or our past. Church is a place for everyone to learn and grow. You may have a certain stereotype in your head that you don’t feel you fit in with, but the truth is our members come from all different backgrounds and interests. Come for a visit, and you might be surprised at who you find sitting in the pews next to you.

Who are the missionaries?

Missionaries are volunteers who have set aside their normal lives for up to two years to help others come closer to Jesus Christ. Before leaving on a mission, they were students, employees, athletes, bookworms, musicians, and, well, you get the idea. After their service, they will return home to finish college, work, date and marry, and live a pretty normal life.They come from all over the world. It’s not uncommon for missionaries to serve in a country and speak a language other than their own. Missionaries serve as young adults or in their retired years as singles or couples. Whatever their age, their motivation is sincere—they leave their homes and families for a period to do what Jesus taught His Apostles: “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).

Do missionary visits cost money?

No. The gospel of Jesus Christ is for everyone. He invites everyone to come unto Him “without money and without price” (Isaiah 55:1). Missionaries actually pay to see you, covering their own costs to come on a mission. Local Church leaders and class instructors don’t get paid either.

What are Church services like?

One of the great truths in the Bible is that we are all the “offspring of God” (Acts 17:29), created in His image. As a child of God, you have infinite potential and worth.

[H2] God Knows You Personally

Jesus Christ taught that God is aware of us. He knows each time a sparrow falls to the ground, and we are “of more value than many sparrows” to Him (Matthew 10:29–31). Through every difficulty you face, you are never alone. God knows you perfectly and knows what you need to help you endure your challenges and feel His love.

God hears and answers our prayers. Answers to prayer will always come, even if they take time or aren’t the answers we expected or hoped for. We can soften our hearts to accept His will for us. Answers to prayer can take many forms, including thoughts and feelings, the actions of someone around you, or a scripture that touches your heart.

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.

Here, people of all ages serve together in the Church community. Families, single adults, children, widows, and young married couples worship together in the same meeting.Language wards and branchesIn some areas, you may notice there are wards or branches listed with a language next to it. These are congregations that hold meetings in a language that is different from of the most common language of the area you are searching in.Young Single Adult Wards and branchesYoung single adult wards and branches are for individuals who are single and between the ages of 18 and 35. [H2] What to Expect from Sunday Services
Church is a place of community and learning, but most importantly it’s a place to worship God and Jesus Christ. All 30,000 of our congregations around the world follow a similar two-hour format for Sunday services:

[H3] Sacrament Meeting
During what we call “sacrament meeting,” all members of the congregation meet together. The meeting includes an opening and closing prayer, a few hymns, and sermons given by fellow Church members.The most important part of sacrament meeting is taking the sacrament, which is similar to Communion in other Christian religions. During the sacrament, we remember Jesus Christ as we take a small piece of bread and cup of water that are symbolic of the body and blood He sacrificed for us. During this quieter time, we try to think about ways we can follow Him more faithfully during the coming week.As a visitor, you won’t be expected to participate in anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. Feel free to simply sit in the congregation and take in the experience.
[H3] Classes
In addition to sacrament meeting, people are invited to stay for a second hour of learning in a smaller setting.Children go to Primary, where they learn scripture stories, songs, and age-appropriate lessons about Jesus and His gospel. Teenagers attend similar classes for their own age-groups.On alternating Sundays, adults attend Sunday School together, studying the books of scripture selected for Churchwide study that year. On the other weeks, they break up into separate classes for men (known as the elders quorum) and women (known as the Relief Society).If you’re not sure where to go, just ask, and someone will help you find the right class.

If you attend a Sunday worship service with us or have a friend who is a member of our Church, you might get invited to one of the other activities going on in your local congregation. A few examples include:Social activities, such as a Christmas party.Weekly youth group activities.Institutes of religion for young adults to study the scriptures and socialize together.Community service projects.Self-reliance classes.Concerts or other artistic performances.

What should I wear to church?

You’re more than welcome to come as you are. If you’re worried you’ll stand out, we try to wear nicer clothes than we wear the rest of the week, to reflect our reverence for God. The most common attire you’ll see at church is a dress shirt and tie for men and a skirt or dress for women.

Will everyone know I’m a visitor?

We have visitors in nearly every congregation, so we’re used to seeing new faces. In a large congregation, people might not even realize you’re a visitor. In other areas, people might notice you and say hello. Either way, don’t hesitate to introduce yourself and ask any questions you might have.

Will I have to participate?

No. When the bread and water of the sacrament is given to the congregation, you can simply pass the tray on to the next person and then sit back and enjoy the rest of the service. You’ll see people volunteering to participate in other ways, such as answering a teacher’s question during Sunday School, but you don’t have to raise your hand if that’s not something you want to do.

Will I be asked to donate money?

No. We do believe in the law of tithing found in the Bible. But our members who choose to pay tithing do that privately, not as part of the worship service. You won’t be asked for donations during a meeting.

Can I bring my children?

Yes! This is a family-friendly church. Children sit with their parents during the main sacrament meeting and then participate in activities with children or teens their own age while the adults go to Sunday School. Children and youth classes are always led by two or more adults. A mother’s lounge provides privacy for feeding infants or other needs.
