From the very first phone call to start the process of arranging my dad’s funeral through to collecting his ashes, The staff at G Collins and Sons were kind, patient and professional.
At each stage they took the time to listen to what we wanted, never rushing us to make decisions about the details.
Very professional service from the first moment. Kind, courteous and we were made to feel at ease everything.
I can’t recommend them enough. From our first contact with them, they acted in a very professional and compassionate manner. All the staff are marvellous and my husband’s funeral was beautiful. I couldn’t have asked for more.

When Someone DiesOak Technology2025-07-15T09:16:28+01:00
[H1] When someone dies
We can be contacted by telephone 24 hours of the day.
When someone dies there are often many things to do, often at a time of great personal distress when you feel least able to cope. The burden is reduced when the funeral has been pre-arranged or pre-paid.
[H3] Death Occurs at Home
If someone dies at home, the following people should be contacted immediately:
The family doctor
The nearest relative
The Funeral Director
If the death was NOT expected or you think there may be suspicious circumstances, then contact the POLICE immediately and remember not to touch or move anything.
[H3] Death Occurs at Hospital or Nursing Home
If the person dies in Hospital or a Nursing Home then they will make any immediate arrangements on your behalf, it is helpful to inform them of your choice of Funeral Director.
[H2] How to register a death
After someone dies, a medical examiner will check the cause of death to make sure it’s accurate.
They will be a senior doctor and they will not have been involved in the care of the person who has died.
The medical examiner’s office will then contact you to:
explain the cause of death
answer any questions you have about this or the healthcare provided to the person before they died
This is voluntary and you do not have to speak to them.
You’ll also be contacted by the medical examiner’s office to confirm you can register the death.
Register the death within 5 days (8 days in Scotland) of being contacted. This includes weekends and bank holidays.
[H3] The Registrar will need the following information:
The Medical Certificate showing the cause of deathThe full names of the deceased person (and any other names they once had)The date and place of deathThe usual address of the deceasedTheir date and place of birthTheir most recent occupationThe name, occupation and date of birth of their spouse or civil partner
[H3] You should also take these if possible:
The deceased person’s medical card or NHS numberThe deceased person’s birth and marriage or civil partnership certificates, if available.
[H2] Arranging a Funeral
We can be contacted 24 hours of the day and once you have contacted us about a death, our dedicated team will guide you through all the funeral arrangements. We do everything on your behalf including the liaison with the Church, Cemetery, Crematorium and Minister. The only part of the arrangements we can not do for you is the death registration.
Once we have discussed your requirements we will write to you confirming all the details of the funeral.
Before making any arrangements, it is best to check the following:
If the deceased has left instructions in their will or a letter about their wishes. There may be an organ donor card or a request for their body to be given to Medical Research.Check whether they had paid into a funeral plan to cover all or some of the funeral expenses. If there is no will, the next of kin should decide what to do. Advice can be given by a member of our team.
[H3] Death Abroad
If someone dies abroad, or on a foreign ship or aircraft, you should register the death according to the local regulations of the country, and get a Death Certificate. Also, register the death with the British Console so that a record can be kept in the UK.

Bereavement SupportOak Technology2022-05-19T11:45:49+01:00

[H1] Bereavement Support
At G. Collins & Sons we believe that the support of our bereaved clients should not end when the funeral has taken place. Grief can feel overwhelming, challenging, and chaotic, not only affecting us emotionally but physically as well. Sometimes natural support from family and friends may be enough but talking to someone outside the family circle can help to put you at ease with your grief.
The skill of an empathic listener within sessions is to stay with the bereaved person through the pain that they are in, not to give advice but to listen, reflect feelings back and be non-judgmental and help the recovery process. This can be through traditional talking and also creative ideas and illustrations
Waiting lists can be long for counselling through a charitable organisation. David is a full-time funeral coordinator but can offer support, talking through the different emotions of your loss before specialised counselling may be needed.
If you would like to discuss if grief counselling is for you, please email David@gcsfd.co.uk who will respond at the earliest opportunity.
Since joining in early 2014 David has always been interested in helping bereaved people to work and understand grief. He shows many levels of empathy, whether out on funerals or back at our offices.
David has successfully completed a BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) Diploma in Grief Counselling, working within the boundaries set by the organisation. David has also attended grief workshops with Cruse Bereavement Care.
David is accepting and friendly, and we provide a safe environment at our White Notley office, to give you time and space to talk about your loved one.
David can offer one to one sessions or email support if required.
6 maximum free sessions would last approximately 50 minutes each.

[H1] Why choose G. Collins and Sons Funeral Directors?
As an independent family company established over 125 years, we are part of the community. Our family members and our business, all have a long and proud history of personal service to our local community. Carrying on the family tradition is a way of life for us and has been for five generations. We are deeply committed to upholding professional standards and are proud to be amongst the oldest continuously operated businesses in Britain.
[H2] What’s in a name?
In many businesses today there are big, international companies that have made their profits by taking over small firms. Sadly, the funeral profession is no exception. Many small independent funeral directors have been swallowed up by the big corporates. The problem is, there usually isn’t any change of name, or if there is, it is very discreet, so you wouldn’t know the difference. That makes it hard for you to distinguish between the independent family-owned firm and the corporate, and without asking, you may not ever know. With G. Collins & Sons you can be sure that our company is still owned and managed by its fifth generation, James Collins and his wife Haley. With us, you can be sure that the company your family has trusted for over 125 years continues to make the decisions, which will affect the service you receive when you need to make funeral arrangements.
[H2] If you’re unsure, ask
It’s important that you know who you’re speaking to – an independent funeral director or just a subsidiary of a vast corporate? When you need the services of a funeral director, you should turn to the firm which has an investment in your community and established over many years.
[H2] Why an independent family owned funeral director is a better choice
We have single-minded devotion. All our attention is on meeting your needs. We are not distracted or bound by corporate rules or profits handed down from head office. We are flexible and trustworthy.
We have personal pride, this is our business. Our community is your community. We take great pride in our funeral homes and our vehicles. We are also proud of our staff, they work extremely hard to ensure a high level of service is provided, and we maintain a regular training programme to guarantee the highest level of professional service is provided.
We are committed long-term. Not only do we want to meet your current needs: we also seek to build a relationship of trust, so that you will return to us in the future as many of our clients have done so. We have a long-term commitment to our community. This is where we live and work, and it’s where we plan to stay.
[H2] Setting national standards
We are proud to be members of the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD).
Though we’re locally owned, we are not limited in our service. Through our membership of NAFD, we can also assist your family in the event of a death occurring away from home. This is made even easier when arrangements have been made in advance through a pre-paid funeral plan.
From pre-paid funeral plans to the funeral itself and any additional advice or services, you can rely on us to meet every requirement and expect a high level of customer care. Our continued membership of these societies requires regular inspections to ensure we are doing just that.
[H2] We know our community
Funeral traditions vary greatly around the counties. We know and appreciate local customs and expectations because we have served in this community for many years. By contrast, the staff and management assigned to a funeral home by a national company may be from another area. Ignorance of local traditions might cause disappointment when expectations are not met.
[H2] We have a personal investment in our neighbourhood
Just as you do, we turn to our local firms for services and products. We choose to do business with other independent people we know and trust. We accept no inducements, so you can be sure of a genuine recommendation on further funeral related services.
Whenever possible, we also support local charities and community groups
[H2] We are family
When your family suffers the loss of a loved one, it can be comforting to know your funeral director. We make every effort to be involved in our community and to create the kind of personal relationship which leads to an individual, sensitive service. If you are like most people, you find it’s easier to deal with people you know. You like the flexibility and personal service. We feel the same way. The more you are aware of local independent family funeral homes, the more you will come to appreciate the difference.
Whether you need our advice when choosing a pre-paid funeral plan or information on the choice of funeral services available and costs, we fully understand the sensitivity of such enquiries and that time is required for decisions to be made. So if you would like a friendly chat with no pressure or obligation please get in touch. Especially if you need immediate assistance at the time of death, remember we are here to serve you 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

[H1] Help with the cost of a Funeral
[H2] Did you know that you may be entitled to help with the cost of the funeral from the following?
The Deceased’s EstateAny Life Insurance PoliciesLocal Heath Authority (NHS)The Local AuthorityA War PensionEmployer’s Pension SchemesTrade UnionsProvident Associations, Friendly Societies, Clubs & Other Associations
[H2] Deceased’s Estate
Payment of the funeral account is one of the first claims upon the estate of the deceased Bank Account(s) & Pension(s). When a bank is notified of the death of a customer no further withdrawals can be allowed on a account which is in the sole name of the deceased, or where the account was a joint account with the deceased as a necessary signatory to the operation of the account, whether it be in credit or overdrawn, although there is usually no difficulty in the Bank agreeing to accept credit for the benefits of such accounts.
However, banks and building societies will normally release funds from the deceased’s frozen account for the settlement of funeral expenses and an invoice can either be sent direct to the relevant bank or can be remitted by hand.
You may need to seek professional assistance with the deceased’s estate.
[H2] Life Insurance Policy
Did the deceased hold a life insurance policy? The insurance company will usually require:
The original insurance policy
A copy of the death certificate
A valid receiptfor the money from the payee (usually meaning Grate of Probate or Letters of Administration).
You may need to seek professional assistance with the deceased’s estate.
[H2] Local Heath Authority (NHS)
If a person dies in hospital the hospital administrator will arrange and pay for a very simple Burial or Cremation Contract Funeral, if no relatives are able to do so and money from the estate of the deceased may be used to pay for the funeral. This arrangement includes stillborn babies.
[H2] The Local Authority
Under section 46 of the Local Authority Social Services Act 1970 a local Authority will arrange for a simple burial or cremation of a body of a person who has died or been found dead in their area, in any case where it appears to the Authority that no suitable arrangements for the disposal of the body have been or are being made otherwise than by the authority.
[H2] War Pensions
On the death of a War Pensioner, the family can claim the cost of a simple funeral from the War Pension Branch of the DWP if the death was related to the disablement. This payment is made as a grant and is not recoverable from the estate of the deceased person.
[H2] Employers’ Pension Schemes
Some employers provide occupational pension schemes that include life insurance cover. This means that a lump sum is paid upon the death of the insured to help with the funeral costs.
[H2] Trade Unions
Some Trade Unions are able to make grants upon the death of a member under certain circumstances.
[H2] Provident Associations, Friendly Societies, Clubs & other Associations
There are many clubs and associations that are able to make grants upon the death of a member or their dependants under certain circumstances.
[H2] Charities
Some local Municipal or other charities concerned with the elderly, those suffering from a particular condition or disability, ex patriots etc. may be able to assist if a need can be proved.
[H2] Benefits & Credits: Funeral Payments from the Social Fund
You could get a Funeral Payment if you’re on a low income and need help to pay for a funeral you’re arranging. How much you get depends on your circumstances and if you qualify.
If you are thinking of claiming please tell us ASAP.
[H2] Repayments
Any money you get is usually paid back from the deceased person’s estate (if they have one). For example, any money or property they had. A house or personal things left to a widow, widower or surviving civil partner are not counted as part of the estate.
[H2] What you’ll get
The Funeral Payment can help pay for: burial fees and exclusive rights to burial in a particular plot cremation fees, including the cost of the doctor’s certificate, up to £700 for funeral expenses, e.g. funeral director’s fees, flowers, coffin, travel to arrange or go to the funeral, the costs for moving the body within the UK – but only for the part of the journey that’s over 50 miles.
If the person who died had a pre-paid funeral plan, you’ll only get help for items not covered by the plan.
Other costs the Funeral Payment can pay for are detailed in form SF200.

About our pre-paid funeral plans
Planning ahead for your funeral is one of the most thoughtful and caring things you can do. Some people never get round to discussing funeral wishes with their loved ones, which can lead to all sorts of worry and anxiety when the time comes.
Taking out a funeral plan is a simple and straightforward way to remove this worry, and it can provide real financial benefits too. Some of the other benefits include:
Pre-arrange the details of your funeral and record any special wishes, such as hymns, music choice and any other personal touches you would like your plan to include
Make financial provision for your funeral
Choose your funeral director in advance
Ensure your family has access to expert help at what can be a difficult time.
Our funeral plan is available to UK residents and there are no complicated medical forms to complete. You can also appoint a nominated representative who we will keep informed about your plan, according to your instructions.
Our plans cover our costs (as specified in the plan paperwork) as long as we carry out the funeral and your requirements don’t change. You can also make a contribution towards third party costs, such as the cremation fees. These costs are outside of our control.
For more information, please download our funeral plans brochure.
How your funds are held
All funeral plan pre-payments are held in an individual whole of life assurance policy for your peace of mind.
Backed by a trusted, national provider
Our funeral plans are provided by Ecclesiastical Planning Services Limited, which is part of a specialist, UK-based financial services group.
Flexible payment options
You can choose to pay for your funeral plan by lump sum or in instalments. There is an additional cost for paying over two or more years and eligibility criteria applies. Please refer to the Instalment Q&A and the Terms and Conditions for more information. Your funeral director will be able to provide you with a personalised quote.

Once your funeral plan is in place, you’ll receive a welcome booklet containing the details of your plan and your funeral plan certificate. Your nominated representative will also receive a copy if you request this.
Terms and Conditions apply to funeral plans – please ask us if you have any questions.
We are an Appointed Representative of Ecclesiastical Planning Services Limited Reg. Your Diagnosis

Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.

Information Density 0 / 30
Read the Narrative & headings: do hard facts (prices, dates, numbers) outweigh fluff power-words?
Semantic Coherence 0 / 20
Compare the homepage promise against the sub-page reality. Do they hold the same line?
Trust & Proof 0 / 20
Weigh review mentions against actual external proof links. Claims without verification = theatre.
Commodity Fingerprint 0 / 15
Check headings & narrative against the industry clichés in the setup above.
Identity & Authority 0 / 15
Inspect the schema: is there real Organization/Person identity with sameAs links, or gaps?
Your predicted BS score 0 / 100
💡 Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)

These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.

Information Density

Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.

Semantic Alignment

Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.

Trust & Proof

Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.

Commodity Fingerprint

Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.

Identity & Authority

Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.

Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

This is a benchmark for low-BS business communication. It provides high-utility, legally-compliant, and transparently-priced content that respects the user’s intelligence and time. The only points deducted are for technical schema omissions and minor structural redundancies, not for lack of substance.

1. Implement LocalBusiness and Organization JSON-LD schema to link the business identity to the official NAFD and FCA records. 2. Consolidate the duplicate ‘An Independent Family Company’ H2 headings on the homepage to improve technical SEO and hierarchy. 3. Add direct outbound links to the Google Business Profile or Trustpilot pages to verify the review counts mentioned. 4. Populate the ‘gcollins’ author profile page with actual biographical details or remove the author bio section to avoid the ‘this author has not yet filled in any details’ fluff message.

The website perfectly aligns with the Funeral Directors industry category. The content is strictly focused on death care services, bereavement support, and funeral arrangements in the Braintree and Essex areas.

“The score of 22 is driven primarily by the lack of structured identity data (schema) and minor technical hierarchy issues. In terms of content honesty and substance, the site is nearly perfect, which is reflected in the low scores for Information Density and Semantic Coherence.”
