The vision for Keymer Hall centred on shaping a home that feels both comfortable and inviting, while still conveying a sense of understated luxury. At the same time, careful consideration was given to the specific needs of its elderly residents, as well as the identity of the Boutique Care brand. The overall approach embraced bright, open interiors and spacious layouts designed to encourage interaction and a sense of togetherness. This was brought to life through a creative mix of colour, pattern, and curated artwork, introducing character and visual richness across the home.

Reception & Bistro
The Reception and Bistro at Keymer Hall form the heart of the home, designed to create an immediate sense of warmth and impact. As both the main arrival point and a lively social space, it welcomes residents and visitors alike while encouraging everyday interaction. A range of seating styles has been carefully selected to suit residents and their families, helping to create a relaxed and inclusive environment. The design of this space takes inspiration from a heritage palette of olive and mustard tones, paired with soft linen textures, classic cottage-style patterns, and French weave flooring. Together, these elements reflect the character of the South Downs and the surrounding Burgess Hill landscape. This design language continues into the ground floor corridors, creating a seamless visual journey and strengthening the connection to nature throughout the space.

Challenges/Problem Solving
A key challenge within the Reception and Bistro area was incorporating several structural columns without compromising the open plan feel the client envisioned. This was resolved by designing a bespoke divider that integrates the columns into open shelving, maintaining clear sightlines to the bistro while preserving a sense of openness. Two additional columns also posed layout difficulties, which were addressed by building custom display units around them. Positioned to be visible from the bistro, these features help to subtly define the space and neatly frame the piano area. As a result, the solution not only overcomes a practical constraint but also introduces an appealing architectural element to the overall design.

Dementia
The entire first floor of Keymer Hall is dedicated to residents living with dementia, with a design carefully tailored to enrich their daily experiences. Each corridor section is distinguished by its own colour palette and theme, supporting wayfinding while offering a variety of activities that cater to different interests. In the park-inspired area, residents can relax under a thoughtfully designed digital skylight, enjoying a picnic-style setting that encourages social interaction and sparks fond memories of time spent outdoors. As residents explore the themed corridors, they encounter further immersive experiences, including a replica of Burgess Hill’s high street, a woodland cabin for reading the newspaper, a library paying tribute to local poet Elizabeth Bartlett where residents can create their own poems, and a fishing memorabilia area. Each theme draws inspiration from local landmarks, allowing residents to reconnect with familiar places and memories from their past. Situated along the Burgess Hill high street corridor, the lounge is themed as “The Burgess Hill Florist,” giving a fresh purpose to what might otherwise be an ordinary lounge space. Designed as a calm, luxurious area free from TV noise, it allows residents to relax and enjoy a variety of activities. Illuminated wallpaper panels behind the sofas create a serene backdrop, while residents can explore floristry through dedicated books or select flowers from pre-arranged bouquets to take back to their rooms, encouraging both learning and personal enjoyment.

Lounge & Dining
Every lounge and dining area at Keymer Hall has been thoughtfully designed to reflect its intended purpose, ensuring residents feel relaxed and truly at home. Warmth and character are brought to these spaces through floral motifs, montage artwork, and vibrant accents, creating environments that are both visually engaging and welcoming. The design also respects the client’s preference for openness: lounges and dining rooms are positioned directly opposite one another, forming larger, connected areas that encourage social interaction and a sense of community among residents.

Lighting
Lighting throughout Keymer Hall was carefully coordinated by M&E specialists to achieve the appropriate lux levels for each space. This technical precision is enhanced by the interior designer’s inclusion of feature pendant lights on separate circuits, offering flexible lighting options that contribute to a homely atmosphere.

Practicality
While Keymer Hall’s interiors are undeniably stylish and contemporary, practicality and the specific needs of care home residents were always a top priority in the design. This was achieved through the careful selection of materials and finishes that meet the exacting standards of a care environment. These include flooring and wall surfaces with appropriate Light Reflective Values, impervious-backed and anti-microbial carpets and upholstery, fire-retardant fabrics, anti-slip vinyl flooring, durable washable vinyl wallpapers, and furniture designed specifically for healthcare use. Though often subtle, these choices are essential in making Keymer Hall not only visually appealing but also a safe, comfortable, and highly functional home that supports and enriches the daily lives of its residents.

Aston Manor has been thoughtfully designed as a home for everyone, residents, visitors, and staff alike. With 78 bedrooms, including 6 bariatric rooms, 2 Residential Suites, and a dedicated Family Suite for visiting loved ones, the home truly embraces inclusivity and sense of belonging. Offering Residential, Dementia, Bariatric, Post-Operative, and Rehabilitation care, as well as a Day Care service, promoting a strong sense of community. Day guests are welcomed to share in daily activities, meals, and social moments, alleviating isolation, but also creating bonds between residents and the wider community.The interiors at Aston Manor go far beyond visual aesthetics, every element has been designed to enhance the daily experience of those who live, work, and visit here. Each design decision was made with the end user in mind, responding to the diverse physical, cognitive, and emotional needs of residents while supporting staff efficiency and visitor comfort.

Every detail, from the grand social spaces to the smallest personal touches, has been crafted to create an environment where connection thrives, creativity is encouraged, and lives are enriched.This vibrant, welcoming community was made possible through a carefully considered interior design approach that puts people at its heart. Every material, colour, and layout decision was made to inspire warmth, encourage connection, and promote wellbeing. The open-plan Central Hub brings energy and movement to daily life, whilst each residence, with its own colour palette and personality, offers moments of calm and individuality.

Aston Manor redefines what a care home can be. It’s not a place of quiet corridors and closed doors, but a lively, vibrant, and joyful community that enhances the lives of everyone who steps inside.It’s a place to live, work, and visit with pride, where laughter fills the Central Hub, conversations flow freely, and life feels rich with possibility. RECEPTION & CENTRAL HUB
As you enter through the main entrance, the statement café bar immediately sets the scene, a striking backdrop that gives a glimpse of what to expect from this first-class home. It draws everyone in, acting as a natural anchor and the true heartbeat of the building. Positioned at the centre, with its curved form, the bar becomes a natural crossroads, allowing the facilities to flow outwards from this central core. The open upper section lets light pour through, keeping the space bright.The back bar houses a coffee machine and fridges, surrounded by a relaxed seating area that encourages people to stop, chat, and connect. Artwork around the Central Hub celebrates familiar local landmarks, pieces that residents, staff, and visitors recognise and connect with. These details not only root the home in its community but also spark memories and conversation.Flowing directly from the Central Hub are some of Aston Manor’s top-class facilities; the Cinema, Piano Bar, Private Dining Room, and Hair & Beauty Salon. Each has been designed not just as an interior, but as a complete experience.

PIANO BAR
The Piano Bar is a cosy and sophisticated nook within the Central Hub, the gold fretwork panels cleverly transform structural columns into a beautiful feature, connecting the Piano Bar to the Hub while giving it a more intimate, cosy feel.A cleverly placed mirror transforms what was once a dead corner, reflecting light and making the space feel larger and more open. This detail was then elevated with luxurious drapes and ceiling wallpaper, adding depth, softness, and a touch of grandeur.The colour palette flows seamlessly from the Hub by using the same blue and gold colours, but in deeper, moodier shades, to create a space that feels connected yet distinct, perfect for relaxing, listening to music, or enjoying a quiet drink with friends.

CINEMA
The Cinema was thoughtfully designed to feel like a natural extension of the Central Hub, with the teal colour palette tying spaces together, and by repositioning the doors onto the chamfered wall, the room is able to open up fully.The room is more than just a cinema, it’s a flexible, social destination that is adaptable to the occasion, rather than a closed-off space for film nights only. It’s a space for everyone; residents, families, and visitors, a space designed to be an experience rather than a room.

SALON
The Hair & Beauty Salon is a neutral palette of beiges and greys paired with gold elements for a luxury feel whilst appealing to all genders and not dissimilar to a high street salon.A challenge faced in this room was the lack of wall space, there is a lot of glazing and doors. Front and backwash sinks have been incorporated into a bespoke styling unit that also cleverly houses laundry bins, styling trolley, hood dryer & towel storage across one wall.

BATHROOMS
The bathrooms at Aston Manor were designed as calming retreats for residents. A soft palette of neutrals and warm browns, paired with natural wood and subtle gold accents, creates a soothing, tactile environment.We opted for full height wall tiling, as well as slip resistant tiled floors rather than safety vinyl, as this would be more reflective of a domestic setting. Wall niches provide visual interest without costly bespoke furniture, while artwork, accessories, and aromatherapy-inspired scents engage the senses.Dimmable lighting completes the effect, enhancing the relaxed atmosphere and making the bathrooms feel restorative and inviting, challenging the traditional clinical care home stereotype.

ASCOTT LIBRARY LOUNGE
The Library Lounge offers a cozy, intimate retreat designed for quiet relaxation. It’s the perfect spot to unwind with a good book or enjoy a tabletop game with a friend, providing a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the main lounge areas.The bespoke bookcase and display unit serves as the focal point of the room, with its integrated lighting enhancing the snug ambience.This space gives residents choice and variety in how they spend their time, ensuring they never feel restricted or bored

THE FAMILY SUITE
The Family Suite provides a welcoming space for residents’ family and friends to visit and enjoy the hospitality of Aston Manor.Thoughtfully designed with a half-height dividing wall, the layout ensures the TV is visible from both the lounge and bedroom areas while allowing natural light to flow throughout the room.This creates an open, airy atmosphere while subtly defining each zone. The suite includes all the amenities needed for a comfortable and homely stay.

CARE SUITES
The Care Suites offer the perfect option for couples seeking residential care who wish to stay together, or for individuals looking for more space and independence while still benefiting from the excellent support that defines life at Aston Manor.Designed in a calm, neutral colour scheme, each suite provides a comfortable and versatile base, allowing residents to personalise the space and truly make it their own.

BEDROOMS
Bedrooms aren’t just for sleeping, they are spaces of comfort, security, and personal expression.Residents have the choice of four bedroom schemes, to serve as a base that they can build upon and personalise to make the space their own. Heavy patterns have been kept to easily changeable elements, such as cushions and bed runners, giving residents choice and control over the look and feel of their room.Each bedroom has a small double bed that combines nursing bed functions with a homely and domesticated design, with the focal point of the room being a custom storage and display unit that contains 2 double wardrobes, a desk, drawers, mini fridge, TV, and display shelving.The chamfered end display shelves double as a modern twist on the traditional memory boxes outside of resident’s bedrooms, visible from both inside and outside the room to aid wayfinding and display personal items.

PRIVATE DINING ROOM
The Private Dining Room is a grand, rich and luxurious space that offers an opulent feel – purposely designed to feel very different to the residence Dining Rooms. This is a space to gather on special occasions to celebrate with family and friends, a ‘destination’ experience much like going out to a fancy restaurant.The large oval dining table in the centre of the room is mirrored by a feature ceiling recess, complete with a metallic wallpaper to reflect light, and a LVT flooring pocket under the dining area is both functional and design led. The main flooring being carpet adds a sense of grandeur and softness, yet the functional LVT flooring pocket means ease of cleaning.The scheme uses a soft palette of pinks with a darker mauve and striking contrast of wenge wood shades to add drama and luxury. This space also offers residents a chance to invite their loved ones into their home to dine and celebrate together, giving a sense of pride and belonging.

THE WELLNESS CENTRE (HYDROTHERAPY & PHYSIOTHERAPY)
The Wellness Centre, consisting of the Hydrotherapy Suite & Physiotherapy Suite has been thoughtfully designed to serve both residents and the wider community. With its own secure external entrance, the facility can be accessed by external services, providing a much-needed hydrotherapy resource for the local area.Branded as the ‘Wellness Centre’, it is a holistic destination for wellbeing rather than simply a functional facility. A sense of arrival is created from the internal corridor through a statement architrave, distinctive signage, and ambient wall lighting that compliments the surrounding interiors whilst giving the area its own identity.Once inside, a branded feature wall and a palette of rich woods, marble, and gold accents evoke a calm, spa-like retreat that has been carefully designed to remove any sense of a clinical feel, and instead evoke comfort, dignity, and relaxation.

HYDROTHERAPY SUITE
The Hydrotherapy Suite continues the same warm, soft palette, with natural textures that create a sense of calm. The marble feature wall adds a touch of luxury, while soft, dimmable lighting sets the mood for relaxation. PHYSIOTHERAPY SUITE

Air-resistance equipment replaces traditional weights, offering a safer, smoother experience that’s perfectly suited to residents’ needs.

DEMENTIA COMMUNITY
The dementia community at Aston Manor is made up of the Coppice and Cliveden residences, connected by a central hub featuring the Sports Café and Hobby’s Club.Each residence includes its own Lounge Diner, creating smaller, more personal living spaces that feel homely, comfortable, and familiar.At Aston Manor, the dementia community was designed with the same thoughtful, resident-focused approach as the rest of the home. While all residents and visitors have access to the home’s facilities, we know that traditional café bar spaces can feel overwhelming or confusing for people living with dementia.We wanted to ensure that residents living with dementia had their own ‘destination’ tailored to their needs, without making families or visitors feel confined to the lounge or bedroom.To achieve this, we created the Sports Café in the central area between Coppice and Cliveden residences. The space has a clear identity, offering stimulation for residents in a way that is also welcoming and relatable for families and visitors of all ages.The Sports Cafe has been designed to encourage connections, whether that be one-on-one moments, family fun, or visits with children – encouraging intergenerational socialisation.

Beulah Vista is a luxury care home situated in Upper Norwood, providing residential, nursing, and dementia care for its residents. Catalyst Interiors was engaged to skilfully and tastefully execute the client’s vision of understated elegance while ensuring that the design met essential healthcare standards without sacrificing luxury.The home’s amenities are thoughtfully designed as destination spaces for residents and their families to enjoy together. These include a bar and bistro, a hair salon, a cinema, and a private dining room, all meticulously planned for optimal room layout and finishes.

The first floor of Beulah Vista is exclusively dedicated to residents with dementia, and its design aims to enhance their lives meaningfully. Each section of the corridor features a unique colour scheme and theme, facilitating wayfinding and offering various activities tailored to residents’ interests, including areas for floristry, music, and games.

While the interiors of Beulah Vista are striking and contemporary, practicality and the specific needs of care home residents were prioritized throughout the design process. This was achieved through careful selection of materials and finishes that comply with stringent care home requirements, such as flooring and wall finishes with suitable Light Reflective Values.

The choice of materials extends to impervious and antimicrobial carpets and upholstery, fire-retardant fabrics, anti-slip vinyl flooring, and durable, healthcare-specific furniture. These elements, often overlooked, are essential in ensuring that Beulah Vista is not only visually appealing but also a safe, comfortable, and functional environment that enhances the daily lives of its residents.

Lavender Fields Care Village was designed to offer a luxurious yet inclusive environment for a retirement community. Central to this vision is the Communal Hub, a versatile and welcoming space featuring a variety of amenities including a pub, café, village shop, post office, and wellbeing suite. This hub aims to enhance the daily lives of residents by providing convenient access to essential facilities and fostering social interaction. The integration of natural elements, such as pops of lavender, was also key to creating a calming and harmonious atmosphere.The hub’s open-plan layout fosters a sense of community and makes navigation intuitive. Furniture should be adaptable to accommodate a pop-up stage for social functions, while the overall design must incorporate dementia-friendly elements, such as effective wayfinding, lighting, and accessibility.

How the Project Met the Brief
Lavender Fields Care Village was thoughtfully designed as a luxury retreat for the retirement community, nestled within the tranquil Yorkshire countryside. The combination of retirement bungalows, a large care home, and sprawling grounds with lavender bushes promotes a connection to nature, supporting mental wellbeing. The high street replica at the entrance provides easy access to essential amenities while creating a vibrant community atmosphere.

Prioritising the Residents
The Communal Hub offers residents various options for relaxation and socialisation, including “The Stag Inn” pub and “The Lemon Tree” café. Each space was thematically designed to be inviting and comfortable. The Wellbeing Suite, complete with a live wall and neon signage, highlights the care village’s commitment to physical health. The suite is sectioned into distinct areas for privacy, including a nail parlour, therapy suite, gym, and hair salon.A collapsible stage was designed to meet the village’s entertainment needs, compacting to 1.4m and easily stored. This ensures the space remains versatile, providing engaging activities for residents and redefining the care home experience.

Nature-Inspired Interior Design
The design of Lavender Fields Care Village was inspired by the surrounding natural landscape. Upon entering the Communal Hub, residents and visitors are greeted with a natural palette of olive greens and lavender accents, reflecting the extensive gardens outside. Corridors continue this theme, with 3D greenery artwork and woodland animal motifs that reinforce the “bringing the outside in” ethos.Additional dementia-friendly themed corridors, such as “The Library” and “The Fashion Corridor,” aid residents with wayfinding through the clever placement of landmark accessories, ensuring that the design supports memory and orientation.

Practicality and Safety
While the design prioritises luxury and connection to nature, practical elements were carefully incorporated to enhance residents’ quality of life. The following features ensure safety and functionality:Correct light reflective values to minimise the risk of falls.Impervious back and anti-microbial carpets and upholsteries for hygiene.Fire retardant fabrics for added safety.Anti-slip vinyl flooring in high-traffic areas.Healthcare-specific furniture, designed for comfort and accessibility with appropriate heights and foam cushioning.With space allocations per resident 20% higher than the standard and an interior fit-out budget exceeding the norm by 40%, Lavender Fields Care Village offers a truly exceptional environment. The blend of luxury, practicality, and thoughtful design ensures that residents live comfortably through all stages of care.

Additional Considerations
The bespoke bar in “The Stag Inn” was designed to include a Draught Master module, enabling fresh pints on tap. The integration of technical components such as the beer pump, keg modules, and cleaning system ensures the pub operates efficiently while maintaining its aesthetic appeal.In the village shop, a display unit with magnetic lettering allows staff to easily adjust the signage according to stock changes. This clever feature enhances the unit’s versatility and ease of use.The dining rooms are open-plan, featuring loose dining furniture that can be rearranged to suit residents’ needs. A divider creates a quieter “after dinner” coffee space, which can also be used as a private dining area for residents and their families, making the space adaptable for various occasions.

Sustainability
Lavender Fields Care Village demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability through the integration of photovoltaic panels in the architectural design, providing renewable energy for the home. The village’s extensive gardens, with future plans for bowling greens, outdoor pools, and table tennis areas, enhance the environment by improving air quality and offering additional outdoor spaces for residents.Lavender Fields Care Village successfully combines luxury, practicality, and sustainability, offering residents a peaceful, fulfilling, and environmentally friendly place to call home.
