Explore Our Ingredients [H1] Our Story Inspiration - Growth - Advocacy [IMG: new badger logo 2022] Celebrating 25 years in business and looking ahead to the next quarter century, Badger reveals a fresh new look! A streamlined new logo, reimagined artwork, and updated packaging reflect the simplicity of Badger’s products and the company’s growing focus on protecting the health of our shared planet. In partnership with Rachel Hudson, a wildlife illustrator working with leading conservation organizations, Badger expands the ‘biodiversity’ of its packaging artwork—depicting more of the wild spaces and species it seeks to protect through environmental action and responsibility. [IMG: Badger Balm Co CEOs Emily Schwerin Whyte and Rebecca Hamilton] Badger daughters, Emily & Rebecca, take over leadership of the company as Co-CEOs (Collaborative Executive Officers). Under this new leadership, the company doubles down on its environmental commitments and designates climate activism and regenerative agriculture as core tenants of the company’s ongoing purpose. Badger becomes an FDA registered drug facility and brings all sunscreen manufacturing in-house. [IMG: Badger Bill and Rebecca at NH State Capitol] Badger becomes political for the first time. Seeing the need for changes in NH business regulations, Badger fights to get Benefit Corporation Legislation passed. Badger is successful in helping to pass the legislation and in the spring of 2015 officially incorporates as a Benefit Corporation, solidifying their purpose as a business that is a force for good. Badger is awarded B Corp’s Best for the World in environmental activism and is formally recognized as a leader in the growing B Corp community. On the social side, Badger takes a leadership role in supporting family friendly legislation and advocacy. [IMG: Badger Balm Factory Under Construction] Badger completes construction on one of the largest post and beam buildings on the east coast and officially moves into their new, LEED Silver, sustainable manufacturing facility. Badger recognizes the need to protect their values and certifies as a B Corp, thus building their mission and principles into the DNA of the business. [IMG: organic from the ground up] Badger becomes a USDA certified organic facility. As awareness for mineral sunscreens grow, Badger continues to be a leader in the industry and formally outlines their commitment to coral reef safety, nearly a decade before the movement becomes popularized. Badger purchases land and designs a new environmentally friendly manufacturing facility for the growing business. [IMG: Badger Balm Family] Badger launches one of the first truly natural mineral sunscreens, which is rated as the safest and most effective sunscreen in the country by the Environmental Working Group’s inaugural sunscreen guide. This catapults the Badger brand to the top of the natural sunscreen market, and inspires the Badger team to live into this honor by continually leading the sunscreen industry in safety and efficacy. In this same year, Badger becomes one of the first companies to produce a fair trade certified cosmetic product. Badger family leadership is expanded to include founder Bill’s wife (Katie) and two daughters (Emily and Rebecca). The Badger founding family writes a formal set of mission and principles to guide the company through the years ahead. Badger launches their Babies at Work benefit as part of a growing commitment to innovative family friendly work practices. Back in the mid-1990s, our founder Bill Whyte worked as a carpenter. He worked hard, and so did his hands. They would often split and crack in the frigid New England winters. One night, seeking a soothing solution, he mixed up some beeswax and olive oil to create a simple herbal balm. It helped his hands so much, he decided to share it with everyone he knew. Bill settled on the name "Bear Paw” for his new product, but to his dismay, he discovered that the name was taken. He put a tin under his pillow and slept. The next day, a new name had come to him as if in a dream: “Badger.” With the help of his family, Bill began filling tins by hand in their kitchen. He packed them in homemade wooden boxes and drove around to hardware stores, selling them out of his work van – and the rest, as they say, is Badger history. [H1] Meet the family behind Badger. Back in 1995, Bill and Katie started hand filling tins of the original Badger Balm in their kitchen. 25 years later, Badger makes nearly 100 products, has over 80 employees, and is sold in 15 countries. Still family owned and operated, the company is now led by second-generation family owners and Collaborative Executive Officers Emily and Rebecca. [H2] Advocacy at Badger Kindness is our Compass [H1] We're on a journey to create a healthier world. Making products sustainably and ethically from only the purest natural and organic ingredients is who we are, but it’s not the whole story. Much of our work at Badger focuses on taking action to achieve positive change for people and the planet. You can see this in our commitment to climate action, our support of regenerative and organic agriculture, our work on coral reef conservation, and our promotion of family-friendly workplace policies, including paid family and medical leave and a fair minimum wage. [H1] What Drives Us to Action Climate & Environment Using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as our guide, we have identified how we can impact our community and the world. Climate action is the most pressing. “In the wake of our country’s decision to pull out of the Paris Agreement, we now see that businesses have a responsibility to stand up and be vocal about our commitments. To inspire others to do the same, we are joining the leaders of our industry.” –Rebecca Hamilton, 2nd generation family owner and Co-CEO [IMG: badger goes solar powered] [H2] Commitment to Net-Zero by 2030 During the 2019 UN Climate Change Conference, COP25, in Madrid, Badger committed to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to reach a 1.5 degree trajectory leading to net zero by the year 2030 - 20 years ahead of the 2050 targets set in the Paris Agreement. To help achieve this we are going solar! More about Commitment to Net-Zero by 2030 [IMG: coral reef safe sunscreen advocacy key west] [H2] Protecting Coral Reefs from Harmful Sunscreen Ingredients Not only does Badger make sunscreens that are coral-friendly, meaning we don’t use any ingredients that harm coral, but we also advocate for community-based legislation banning the use of coral harming sunscreen ingredients, such as in Hawaii, Key West and the US Virgin Islands. More about Protecting Coral Reefs from Harmful Sunscreen Ingredients [IMG: un convention on biological diversity rebecca hamilton] [H2] UN Convention on Biological Diversity Badger’s Co-CEO Rebecca Hamilton addressed the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity in support of organic agriculture and a moratorium on genetic engineering to preserve healthy ecosystems and biodiversity. More about Regenerative Agriculture and NH Legislation [IMG: signing the climate collaborative badger sunscreens] [H2] Signing the Climate Collaborative We’ve signed the Climate Collaborative, a three-year project to catalyze bold action for climate action among natural products companies. We pledge to help reverse climate change by focusing on one or more of nine emissions-reducing areas: agriculture, energy efficiency, food waste, forest conservation, packaging, government policy, renewable energy, transportation, and short-lived climate pollutants (such as methane). More about Signing the Climate Collaborative [IMG: global climate strike badger] [H2] Global Climate Strike On September 20, 2019, in solidarity with the Youth-Led Global #Climate Strike, Badger shut its doors, gave employees paid time off to volunteer and protest, hosted a digital “green out,” and donated 5% of proceeds to climate efforts. Some news stories about Badger’s participation: CBS News Online, Happi, CNBC, and Markets Insider Business as a Force for Good We believe that business can be a force for good and inspire change for the better. We are fighting to bring our country’s safety standards in line with other international cosmetic standards and regulations, to require ingredient disclosure, and to raise the safety and quality of all personal care products. [H1] Badger Testifies in Congress for Paid Family Leave “Federal paid leave would be a game-changer for many working families (i.e., seasonal and temporary workers, factory workers, those workers who are part of our supply chain and retail partners, and our customers and families who we care about and want to see covered). It would level the playing field for the millions of small businesses nationwide that are struggling to attract and retain engaged, skilled workers.” – Rebecca Hamilton, Badger Co-CEO meeting with US Representative Richard Neal (D-MA) Read Rebecca's Full Testimony [IMG: rebecca hamilton us senate paid family leave] [H1] We ❤ Changemakers [H2] Our Partners and Change Agents [IMG: B Corp Logo Badger Partner] [IMG: Campaign for Safe Cosmetics Logo Badger Partner] [IMG: Fair Trade Logo Badger Partner] [IMG: Protect Our Winters Logo Badger Partner] [IMG: Impact Monadnock Logo Badger Partner] [IMG: Ceres Logo Badger Partner] [IMG: Climate Collaborative Logo Badger Partner] [IMG: American Sustainable Business Council Logo Badger Partner] [IMG: NHBSR Logo Badger Partner] [IMG: We Are Still In Logo Badger Partner] [IMG: Reef Safe Sunscreens] [H1] Simply the Safest - Reef Safe Sunscreens We are proud to be one of the first sunscreen manufacturers to attain the Protect Land + Sea certification. Your Diagnosis
Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.
Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)
These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.
Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.
Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.
Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.
Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.
Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.
Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.
Based on 1453 businesses audited.
Badger has 35.4 points less BS than the average for Beauty, Cosmetics & Personal Care.
Beauty, Cosmetics & Personal Care BS: Badger (badgerbalm.com)
Badger is a benchmark for low-BS business communication. They don’t just use ‘mission-driven’ as a tagline; they prove it by citing Congressional testimony and the specific laws they lobbied for to change their industry’s regulatory landscape.
To reach a near-zero score, implement Person schema for Rebecca Hamilton and Emily Schwerin-Whyte to link their professional footprints directly to the organization’s structured data. Update the blog content more frequently to ensure recent dates (post-2024) are prominent across all ‘Cultivating Good’ categories. Provide direct outbound links to the specific EWG and B-Corp impact reports mentioned in the text rather than just stating the results. Add a dedicated ‘Lab Results’ or ‘COA’ (Certificate of Analysis) lookup for batch-specific ingredient transparency.
The site perfectly matches the Beauty, Cosmetics & Personal Care category, specifically focusing on organic skincare and mineral sunscreens. The content confirms this through technical discussions of zinc oxide, FDA drug facility registration, and INCI-adjacent ingredient philosophy.
“The score of 10 is driven by the nearly total alignment between brand claims and forensic evidence. Minor points were deducted in Information Density for repetitive use of the 'family-owned' value prop and in Identity and Authority for basic Organization schema that doesn't fully leverage Person-level property links for the CEOs.”
This training module utilizes a snapshot of public data from Badger, captured on May 29, 2026, to demonstrate how machine logic evaluates different types of business narratives.
Purpose: This data is presented under “Fair Use” / “Educational Exception” for the purpose of forensic semantic analysis, allowing users to compare human intuition against machine-generated evaluations.
Notice to Badger: This analysis is part of a non-adversarial audit conducted by 1 Euro SEO. The results provided by 1EuroSEO are intended as professional feedback to help improve any website’s machine-readability and authority signals. The 1EuroSEO BS Detection Tool is a free tool, and anyone can test any company to see how their content is interpreted by AI models.
