[H5] Overcriminalization drives vast racial disparities in our criminal justice system
Throughout its history, the United States has criminalized low-level behaviors relating to poverty and mental illness, often in ways that have disproportionately impacted people of color.

More than 80% of all arrests are for low-level, nonviolent offenses

The overpolicing of people of color has resulted in vast racial disparities in arrests, sentencing, and more:
Our jails and prisons are filled with people who have been targeted by overpolicing for conduct related to homelessness, substance use, and mental health. People of color have been killed by police at higher rates than white people. Many people who can’t pay court fines and fees or bail for minor offenses face driver's license suspensions and jail time.

Black people make up about 13% of the population, but account for 37% of people in jail and prison

[H5] Vera is fighting to end overcriminalization and racial profiling
We work with experts, advocates, and policymakers to research, test, and implement new practices to end this injustice, —from working with prosecutors to increase accountability and decrease racial disparities to helping pass bail reform that closes mass incarceration’s front door. Together, we can create a new paradigm for public safety and racial justice.

[H5] The United States urgently needs to reduce its use of jails, prisons, and detention centers
The United States is among most incarcerated nations in the world, with nearly two million people in prisons and jails and thousands more in immigration detention. Many people are locked up simply because they can’t afford bail.

Losing your freedom, for even a few days, can mean losing your job, housing, and even custody of your children.

Many others are serving long prison sentences stemming from misguided “tough-on-crime” policies. Vera works to end money bail, support prosecutors working to eliminate racial disparities in charging and sentencing, stop the unnecessary use of jails, and end cruelly long sentencing policies.

Detention of Immigrants

Too many people are criminalized for crossing the border and then held in unsafe conditions without access to an attorney.

Reducing Jail and Prison Populations

Overcrowded prisons and jails are a direct threat to health and safety. Vera works to keep people out of these facilities and to keep our communities safe.

Your Diagnosis

Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.

Information Density 0 / 30
Read the Narrative & headings: do hard facts (prices, dates, numbers) outweigh fluff power-words?
Semantic Coherence 0 / 20
Compare the homepage promise against the sub-page reality. Do they hold the same line?
Trust & Proof 0 / 20
Weigh review mentions against actual external proof links. Claims without verification = theatre.
Commodity Fingerprint 0 / 15
Check headings & narrative against the industry clichés in the setup above.
Identity & Authority 0 / 15
Inspect the schema: is there real Organization/Person identity with sameAs links, or gaps?
Your predicted BS score 0 / 100
💡 Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)

These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.

Information Density

Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.

Semantic Alignment

Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.

Trust & Proof

Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.

Commodity Fingerprint

Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.

Identity & Authority

Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.

Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

Charities, Nonprofits & NGOs BS: Vera Institute of Justice (vera.org)

https://vera.org 📍 Industry: Charities, Nonprofits & NGOs
18 BS / 100

Vera Institute of Justice is a high-substance entity that uses data as its primary currency. The site avoids the typical nonprofit trap of emotional vagueness, providing instead a forensic look at systemic failures backed by real-time reporting. Its low BS score reflects a rare alignment between institutional signal and digital proof.

Update the JSON-LD schema to use Organization or NGO types instead of LocalBusiness to better reflect the entity’s global standing. Remove the priceRange attribute from schema as it is not applicable and adds technical noise. Increase the visibility of the researchers’ digital footprints by adding Person schema with sameAs links to their academic or professional profiles. Explicitly link the scale nationwide claim to specific past success stories where a pilot program was adopted as federal or state policy.

The site perfectly aligns with the Charities, Nonprofits & NGOs category, specifically focusing on criminal justice reform and advocacy. The content demonstrates a high level of engagement with government and civic leaders, consistent with a high-level policy and research organization.

“The score of 18 is primarily driven by small technical authority gaps and the use of some industry-standard jargon. The site's information density and semantic coherence are nearly perfect, effectively neutralizing most commodity template penalties. This is a benchmark example of a low-BS nonprofit website.”
