Concepts concerning the development of a pleasing smile were developed by prosthodontists initially to make dentures appear more natural. Prosthodontists learn these concepts by reviewing the literature in seminars and treating patients receiving extensive training in veneers, crowns, bridges and the correction of esthetic imbalances of a smile.

[H3] Do you wear dentures?
When dealing with extensive decay or gum disease, many people must resort to dentures to replace their natural teeth. Over time, the jawbone shrinks, and wearing dentures becomes more and more difficult. Using skills and techniques based on research and experience, a prosthodontist is able to provide the best possible custom-fitted dentures. A prosthodontist may recommend dental implants to stabilize the denture and prevent your jawbone from excessive shrinking.

[H3] Are you missing one or more teeth?
If you are missing one or more teeth, you should consult a prosthodontist. Depending on the number of missing teeth, the condition of the remaining teeth and the patient’s preference, teeth may be replaced by implant-supported crowns/bridges, conventional bridges or removable partial dentures – only a specialist knows for sure.

[H3] Are you interested in dental implants?
Implants were initially developed in Sweden by Dr. Bränemark for patients missing all of their teeth. Now the same principles are applied to replacement of a single tooth or multiple teeth with the same high degree of success. Depending on the condition of your mouth and your preference, a prosthodontist can recommend the type of treatment right for you.
Many prosthodontists now provide implant placement surgery as a routine aspect of patient care. In many cases, prosthodontists are the ideal specialist to provide the dental implant surgery as well as the restoration. The success of the restoration depends on the implant placement, and the prosthodontist is the one member of the dental team who recognizes where the implant should be placed to ensure a satisfactory result.

Cork Specialist Dentistry is located in Suite 18, Block B of The Cork Clinic, which is situated on the Western Road beside University College Cork. Our clinic is fitted with state of the art dental equipment and offers specialist dental treatment including aesthetic dentistry, prosthodontics, implant dentistry, periodontics and orthodontics.
There is easy access from the South via the South Link, the Wilton Road Roundabout and Wilton Road; from the East and Cork City Centre via Washington Street; from the West via the Straight Road and from the North via Sundays Well Road and Wellington Bridge. We are within walking distance of UCC and have parking on site.

Dr. Arthur O’Connor graduated with his Dental Degree (BDS NUI) from Cork Dental School, University College Cork in June 2001 and then worked in general practice for 6 years. During this time he also passed the Membership of the Faculty Of Dentistry exams of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and was awarded his MFD RCSI.

BDS NUI, MFD RCSI, CAGS (Prosthodontics) BU, MSD (Prosthodontics) BU

Dr Arthur O’Connor graduated with his Dental Degree (BDS NUI) from Cork Dental School, University College Cork in June 2001 and then worked in general practice for 6 years. During this time he also passed the Membership of the Faculty Of Dentistry exams of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and was awarded his MFD RCSI.
In July 2007 Dr O’Connor travelled to study at the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, undertaking a three year residency in Postdoctoral Prosthodontics. He graduated in July 2010 with a Certificate in Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Prosthodontics and a Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD). Following this he undertook a one year Implant Dentistry Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, Philadelphia graduating in July 2011.
Dr Arthur O’Connor has worked as a clinical instructor teaching dental students at Cork Dental School, Boston University, and the University of Pennsylvania and lectured to dentists in Ireland and the USA. In July 2010 he presented a research paper at the International Association of Dental Research Annual Scientific Meeting in Barcelona. Currently he is on the committee of the Munster branch of the Irish Dental Association (www.dentist.ie) and he is Past President of the Irish Academy of American Graduate Dental Specialists (www.iaagds.ie). He is a member of the Prosthodontic Society of Ireland, the Irish Dental Association, he is on the European Prosthodontic Association list of Recognised Specialists in Prosthetic Dentistry and he is a member of the American College of Prosthodontists. Dr O’ Connor is also Director of the Cork Branch of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) study group.
Dr O’Connor’s areas of expertise include restorative dentistry, and surgical placement and restoration of dental implants.
On 30th January 2012 Dr O’Connor opened Cork Specialist Dentistry at Suite 18, Cork Clinic, Western Road. During his spare time he enjoys playing soccer with friends, sailing and supporting Munster rugby.

BDS NUI, MFDS RCSI, MSc. U. Lond, M. Orth RCS Ed

Dr. O’ Leary graduated with her dental degree (BDS NUI) from Cork Dental School, University College Cork in June 1999. Following Senior House Officer jobs in Oral and Maxillfacial surgery and orthodontics in the Dublin Dental Hospital and the Countess of Chester Hospital she then proceeded to a Specialist Registrar position in Orthodontics in Kings Colllege London. After she finished her specialist training and obtained her Masters of Science in Orthodontics (with Merit) from the University of London she returned to Ireland. She entered private orthodontic practice in Dublin and Tullamore in 2007.
Dr. O’ Leary holds the following qualifications:
1999 B.D.S. N.U.I. U.C.C.2002 M.F.D.S. R.C.S.I.2007 M.Sc. U.Lon.2007 M.Orth R.C.S.Ed.Dr. O’ Leary obtained several awards during her time in dental school including the Dr. B.Foley gold medal.
Dr. O’ Leary is on the specialist list for orthodontics in Ireland. She is a member of the Irish Dental Association, The Orthodontic Society of Ireland, the American Association of Orthodontists and World Federation of Orthodontists.
She has been a memeber of several dental committees including sub-committees of the British Orthodontic Society, the British Dental Association and currently she is a member of the Irish Dental Association Quality and Patient Safety Committee.
Dr. O’ Leary has a special interest in adult orthodontics and provides lingual orthodontics (braces behind the teeth) as an option for her adult patients.
She also uses temporary anchorage devices which can make treatment simpler and more efficient in selected cases.
She attends national and international conferences every year to maintain an up-to-date practice.

Mr. Arthur O' Connor did a fantastic job on my front tooth . As you can imagine I was very nervous about getting one of my front teeth removed and an implant put in its place. Mr O' Connor was confident that it would feel and look very real. He was right. He explained what the process was going to involve as well as giving me the financial summary upfront. He made me feel relaxed throughout the process and was obviously very dedicated to doing a brilliant job. [H3] Bridges
To replace a missing tooth with a bridge, at least one tooth on either side of the space created by the missing tooth is prepared for a crown. A false tooth joined to the crowns is then cemented to the prepared teeth.

[H3] Congenital & Developmental Tooth Defects
Patients may be missing teeth that never developed or have teeth that are misshapen. A prosthodontist can determine the best way to replace or restore these teeth to proper form and function.

[H3] Crowns
Crowns build up a tooth to restore normal function and appearance. Crowns may be made gold, porcelain fused to metal or all-ceramic (porcelain). Crowns are indicated for teeth with very large fillings, teeth that have had a root canal, fractured teeth and misshapen and/or discolored teeth.

Today’s dental implants are made of titanium and may be parallel-sided or tapered. They are placed into the jawbone and allowed to heal until “integrated” into the bone. When a patient has lost their natural teeth, dentures can restore function and appearance. Many patients experience difficulty wearing conventional dentures due to poor stability or decreased chewing function. Dental implants can help.

When a patient is has multiple missing teeth, and the teeth next to the space are too few or too weak to support a bridge, a removable partial denture is used. They consist of a metal framework and a plastic base with teeth, and must be removed for daily cleaning and at night.

[H3] Teeth Grinding/Night Guards
Often patients who grind their teeth at night are unaware of their habit. The forces exerted on the teeth and the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) can be quite destructive, damaging the teeth or TMJ causing pain or limited jaw movement. A custom-made night guard can protect the teeth and relieve pressure on the TMJ.

[H3] Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea refers to a temporary cessation of breathing while sleeping. Many times the airway is obstructed by the patient’s anatomy, and the placement of a specially designed night guard that repositions the lower jaw can improve the airflow.

Porcelain veneers are used to modify the shape and color of teeth. Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are etched and then bonded to the enamel of the teeth. Tooth preparation is necessary to avoid over bulking of the tooth, but it is limited to the enamel and usually involves only a few surfaces of the tooth.
