A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is a unit of measurement for electricity usage. It represents the amount of energy consumed when a 1,000-watt (1 kW) appliance runs for one hour.
For example:
A 100-watt light bulb running for 10 hours uses 1 kWh.
A 2,000-watt (2 kW) electric heater running for 30 minutes uses 1 kWh.
Your electricity bill is based on the number of kWh you use each month, along with other charges like the unit charge and standing charge. Reducing your energy consumption—for example, by using energy-efficient appliances or shifting usage to off-peak times—can help lower your electricity costs.

With a standard plan you pay one unit rate, during peak and off-peak times. With a smart meter, you can choose from a flat rate with the same cost at any hour of the day, or benefit from time-of-use pricing — meaning the rate you pay can vary throughout the day or on the weekend.
By shifting your usage to off-peak hours, you can significantly lower your energy bills.

Smart meters automatically send readings, so all bills are based on actual use, not estimates. Easy!

If you have a Time of Day meter (also called a Day/Night Meter), you’ll be charged different rates during the day and night. During the day, you’ll be charged a higher rate between 8am and 11pm. You’ll be charged a lower rate at night between 11pm and 8am.
You’ll see the two different rates on your bill, listed as ‘day units’ and ‘night units’ in your bill breakdown.

A scheme was approved by the government to credit all eligible residential electricity customers with €250, in two €125 (incl. VAT) instalments. This will apply to both bill pay and prepay customers.
The credits were applied to customers' accounts in two payment periods:
the first occurring between 1 November 2024 – 31 December 2024
the second occurring between 1 January 2025 – 28 February 2025
Eligible customers will have had the second credit applied to their account by 9 January 2025.

It's more cost effective to drive an EV (electric vehicle) than a fuel-based car. The exact cost depends on your driving needs, car efficiency, and how many miles you drive.
On average, an EV owner charges their EV at home approximately 80% of the time which may add up to 3,000 kWh or more to your electricity bill. If you’re driving your EV 17,500 km per year and sign up to our Smart EV plan, it’ll cost you approximately €180 annually (excluding your household electricity bills), i.e. approximately €1 per 100kms.

Discount Weekend is a Time of Use tariff for customers who already have a smart meter installed. The time-of-use bands are:
Day (8am to 11pm except Peak)
Night (11pm to 8am)
Peak (5pm to 7pm)
Weekends (Friday 11pm to Monday 8am)
Each time band has its own price for electricity meaning you can choose to do more at off-peak times when it costs you less. With the weekend tariff discounts, you are charged a night rate all weekend. Your smart meter data will be collected half-hourly.
You can also choose whether you want to be billed monthly or every two months— and even pick the day of the month you're billed. You'll have access to up to 24 months of your historic half-hourly consumption data via your online account.

If you’re looking for an easy-to-understand smart plan and the same unit rate throughout the day, then the Smart All Day plan may be for you.
This plan splits your usage into four time bands:
Day Monday to Friday (8am to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm)
Day Weekend (8am to 9pm)
Night (9pm to 8am)
Peak (Monday to Friday 5pm to 7pm)
With the Smart All Day plan:
You’ll  have the same flat rate across all time periods
You can choose to be billed monthly or every two months, and pick the day of the month you want to be billed
Your smart meter will collect data every half hour
You'll also be able to view your usage on your online account, and get access to up to 24 months of your historic consumption data via your online account.

This smart plan offers free electricity on either Saturday or Sunday, you choose.
Select a weekend day and your usage is free from 9am - 5pm (fair usage policy applies).
Free Saturday/Free Sunday is a Time of Use tariff for customers who already have a smart meter installed. The time of use bands are:
Day (8am to 11pm, except Peak)
Night (11pm to 8am)
Peak (5pm to 7pm)
Free Time (9am to 5pm on Saturday or Sunday)
Each time period has its own price for electricity, meaning you can do more at a time that costs less. Free time can be either Saturday or Sunday from 9am to 5pm - you can choose the day that suits you best when you sign up.
Customers will be charged for consumption outside of this time band (9am to 5pm on a Saturday or Sunday) at the times/bands set out above. You can choose if you want to be billed monthly or once every two months, and you can pick the day of the month you want to be billed. Your smart meter data will be collected every half hour.
