Your green energy
[H1] Smart meters: helping you save energy around the clock
Getting a smart meter installed will help you monitor how much energy you’re using and when you’re using it. Knowing this, you can pinpoint ways of running your home more efficiently and saving money. We’re currently rolling out smart meters to Ecotricity customers. We have two meter installers, Lowri Beck/Calisen and AES, one of whom will be in touch with you when installations are about to start in your area.As a supplier, we have to adhere to Smart Meter Installation Standards. You can read about these specific national standards by visiting the Retail Energy Code website: https://recportal.co.uk/smis.You can find out more about our smart meter targets and how to use them in our FAQ section, or visit smartenergygb.org which also explains the smart meter rollout across the UK.
[H5] Don’t miss out on your FREE smart meter
Never read your meter againAlways receive accurate bills (never estimated!)Access smart tariffs and save moneyBy installing a smart meter, you’re helping us to get one step closer to a greener Britain – and that’s our mission.Find out more about the benefits of smart meters.
[H5] Ready to get your smart meter?
Call Calisen Metering* on 0161 513 7945*Our smart meter installation partnerWhat are smart meters?Smart meters are the new generation of electricity and gas meter. They automatically send meter readings directly to your energy supplier – which means no more estimated bills – so you’ll only pay for the energy you’ve used. Instead, you’ll receive more accurate bills and won’t have to send us meter readings anymore. What are the benefits of smart meters?
[H4] Use less, pay less
Your smart meter will show you how much energy you're using in real time and how much it’s costing you. You can even compare it with what you’ve used over the last day, month or year.
[H4] Smart from your sofa
Your smart meter lets you view your energy use on the handy In-Home Display (IHD).
[H4] No more regular meter readings
Your meter tells us exactly how much energy you’re using and sends us your readings automatically. That means there’s less need for you to submit meter readings, and you’ll get fewer visits from our meter readers.
[H4] Accurate statements
We’ll know how much energy you’re using, so there’ll be no need for any more estimated bills, meaning you’ll only have to pay for the energy you use.
[H4] Easy pre-payment
Ecotricity pre-payment smart meters make it easier to pay for your energy. When you make your payment, your smart meter will top up automatically – you won’t need to put a card in the meter. You can also top up your meter through our app, so no more treks to the shop! How do smart meters work?Smart meters use wireless communication technology to pass information – such as meter readings – between customers and energy suppliers.Smart meters operate on two networks:The Wide Area Network (WAN) – this allows smart meters to communicate with suppliers over a long distance. Customer meter readings are sent to their supplier using a mobile signal – a bit like sending a text on your mobile phone. The Home Area Network (HAN) – this is the network that allows your electricity and gas meters to communicate with each other, as well as with your in-home display. Put another way, your smart meters communicate with you about your energy consumption through the HAN, plus they send us your meter readings through the WAN.Are smart meters safe for my health?Smart meters use low level radio waves to send meter readings to energy suppliers. There are many everyday devices which use radio waves – for example, radio and TV transmitters, mobiles phones and Wi-Fi.Public Health England (PHE) have reviewed the evidence and concluded that exposure to these low-level radio waves poses no health risks. Smart meters have gone through rigorous safety testing procedures and exceed every UK and EU safety standard. PHE say that exposure to radio waves from smart meters is well within guideline levels, they are many times lower than the exposure from Wi-Fi or mobile phones. Can I opt out of having a smart meter?Yes - although we do recommend the benefits, there is no legal obligation to have a smart meter installed. If you need to exchange due to a meter fault or emergency, it is very likely that the engineer will be installing a smart meter in place of your traditional one. These are the meters that are now being manufactured as standard and are the only ones that are readily available. If you'd like to opt out of having a smart meter, you can email your name and account number to smart@ecotricity.co.uk, call us on 0345 812 5555.Can I have a smart meter if I'm on Economy 7?Almost certainly! If you already have a smart meter, we may simply be able to change the mode so that it works as a two-rate meter. We can do this remotely, so an engineer won’t have to visit your home. If you don’t have a smart meter but would like one, then we’ll need to arrange for an engineer to attend your property. Currently, having a smart meter installed is free, so if you’d like your meter exchanged to an Economy 7 smart meter, we can arrange that. Just contact us and let us know. Are smart meters secure?Security has been a really important part of the smart meter programme from the start, meters are designed with strong security features to protect your data and privacy.Smart meters don't connect to the public internet - they operate on a secure system. Energy companies use advanced encryption and follow strict regulations to ensure your information is kept safe. The meters store information about how much electricity and gas you've used, but they don't store any personal details such as your name, contact information or bank details. No one will be able to see your consumption data without your consent - it's between you and your energy supplier. Why are we offering smart meters?Smart meters are a great way to help our customers monitor their energy consumption, save money and reduce emissions, plus avoid the hassle of having to submit meter readings.Smart meters will help us as the energy supplier too, as in the future we will be offering advanced tariffs and products that make use of smart meter technology. The government requires energy suppliers to offer smart meters to all homes and small businesses across Britain by the end of 2025.Smart meters are available at no extra cost and will be installed without charge by your energy supplier, even if you rent. Can I have a smart meter if I am a Pay As You Go customer? We’re developing the functionality for second generation smart meters. If you’re a Pay As You Go customer and you’d like a smart meter, let us know by contacting us on smart@ecotricity.co.uk or call 0345 812 5555. How will my smart meter be installed? Both your current electricity and gas meters will be replaced with smart meters, and you’ll also receive an in-home display. An engineer will visit your home, safely remove your old meters, install new smart meters, and then talk you through how to use them. When will my smart meter be installed? We’re installing smart meters in stages. We have two meter installers, Calisen Metering and AES, one of them will be in touch with you when installations are about to start in your area. How long does it take to install a smart meter? In most cases a dual fuel smart meter installation (gas and electricity) should be completed in about 2 hours. Appointments can be booked for mornings or afternoons on the day of your choice. Do I have to pay for a smart meter to be fitted?Smart meters are being installed in homes across Britain for free – and our meter installer will be in touch soon to let you know when we’re ready to install yours. Do I need to have an internet connection for the smart meter to work? No, you do not need to have an internet connection for smart meters to work. Depending on your location your smart meters will communicate by either using existing mobile or radio signals currently in your area. Will I get new meters for Gas and Electricity?Yes, both your traditional gas and electricity meters will be upgraded to smart meters. You'll also receive an in-home display (IHD) which will show usage for both electricity and gas. Where will the new meters be installed? The new meters will be installed in the current location of your gas and electricity meters. If you have difficulties getting to your new smart meters and want to move them to somewhere more convenient, you’ll need to speak to your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) or National Grid. Just to let you know, they will charge you for the changes you request.
[H4] Before your installation
One of our meter installers, either Calisen or AES Smart Metering, will contact you to arrange a time and date for your installation. They will tell you what to expect, how long it will take and if there’s anything you need to do.You will need to let the installer in on the day and make sure they can access your current meters - you might need to clear out the cupboards! If you think there might be any access issues, let us know by calling contacting us on smart@ecotricity.co.uk or 0345 812 5555.
[H4] During your installation
Depending on whether you're having one or both meters replaced, you'll get a smart electricity meter and/or a smart gas meter. These normally go exactly where your old meters were. If they need to be fitted somewhere else, the installer will ask you first. You’ll also be offered an in-home display, free of charge. This is a portable display screen you can put anywhere in your home. You don’t have to have one, but it’s the easiest way to see what energy you’re using and what it’s costing you.
[H4] On arrival your installer will:
Show you a photo ID card before they start.Explain what your smart meter system does and how to use it.Check your new meter(s) work properly.Give you a handy guide about your smart meter.Answer any questions you have.Tell you where you can find more help and information.Who installs the meters? All new meters will be installed by one of our partners, Calisen or AES. All our meter installers have to pass a formal qualification and meet specific national standards. As a supplier, we have to adhere to Smart Meter Installation Standards. You can read about these specific national standards by visiting the Retail Energy Code website: https://recportal.co.uk/smis I have an appointment to have a smart meter installed and I need to change it.If you need to change your smart meter appointment, all you need to do is call the number provided in your smart metering confirmation email or letter. We’ll add your MPAN to your Ecotricity export account within 5 working days and ask you for your first meter reading. 4. Finally, we’ll connect to your smart meter and start measuring the energy you export, which you’ll be able to see in your online account. [IMG: Smart Export Tariff (Earn 16p per kWh)]
What generation system do I need? You’ll need a home solar or wind generation system with a maximum generation capacity of 5MW. Do I need a smart meter?Yes, you’ll need to have a SMETS1 or SMETS2 smart meter that’s working and communicating, plus give consent for us to collect half hourly data from your meter. If you don’t have one, we can install one for you if we already supply you for your import (energy) supply. You won’t be able to sign up to our Export Tariff until you have a smart meter installed and communicating. How and when will I be paid? We’ll calculate what you’ve exported and send you an invoice every three months - we’ll then pay you for this within 10 working days of the date of your invoice. You will have two accounts with us – one for import and one for export. Each account will be billed and paid separately. Is there a standing charge for our Smart Export Tariffs? There’s a zero pence standing charge on our Smart Export Tariff. This isn’t a mistake – we’re obligated to include a standing charge, even though we’re not charging for it. You’ll see a zero amount on your export statements for the standing charge.A normal standing charge will apply for your import account – but your export account standing charge will be zero. What if I already receive Feed-in Tariff (FIT) payments? If you’re a member of the government’s Feed-in Tariff (FIT) scheme that closed to new applicants in 2019, you’ll need to inform your FIT Licensee to opt out of FIT Export before signing up for our Smart Export Tariff. Alternatively, if you’d prefer, you can switch to our Microtricity service and we'll handle all the admin for your payments, completely hassle-free. You only need to opt out of the “export” part of FIT - you can still receive payments for your generation through the FIT scheme and get paid for your export through a Smart Export Tariff, such as ours. We’ll need you to provide evidence that your FIT licensee has opted you out - this is usually just an email confirmation from them.If you opt out of FIT, you won’t be able to opt back in for 12 months. Is the Smart Export Tariff variable or fixed? It’s a variable tariff with no fixed contract term or termination fees. That means you can cancel at any time without paying exit fees. What are the terms and conditions? Here are the Smart Export Tariff Terms and Conditions and the Principal Terms. What information do I need to provide? To join our Smart Export Tariff, you’ll need to provide us with:Proof of ownership of the systemYour installation certificate from MCS or Flexi-OrbYour G98/G99 form from your Distribution Network Operator (DNO)The name of your current supplier, if your switching an export supply to us.Will I get paid more or FIT or SET?This will depend on how you use the electricity you generate and we’re not able to advise on what may be best for you. If you’re on a FIT scheme currently, you may be on a “deemed” tariff, which means they’ll record how much electricity you generate and calculate 50% of this which they’ll pay you for your export. Some FIT customers are on a tariff which pays based on exactly what you’ve exported - if you’re on this tariff, you should just be able to compare your current export unit rate vs an alternative export product. What is a G98/G99 form, and why do I need to provide it?G98 and G99 forms are issued by your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) and confirm that the industry recognises your installation as being legally and safely connected to the distribution network. If you don't have one, you should first call your installer, as they should have arranged and issued this to you. If your installer is no longer trading (or isn't responsive to your requests), you can contact your DNO directly.Who your DNO is will depend on where you live - you can find the right DNO for your area [here] -Who’s my electricity network operator? – Energy Networks Association (ENA)We’re not able to accept older G83/G59 devices (inverters) that are not compliant with G98/G99 as they’re not legally allowed to be connected to the UK distribution network from May 2019 onwards. The system will need to be upgraded and you'll need to get a G98/G99 certificate for you to be able to benefit from our Smart Export Tariff. This is also a requirement for Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) products across all suppliers, in line with Ofgem guidance.Does the account holder on the export account have to match the account holder on the import account? You can have a different account holder, but this would require setting up an entirely new account. Please be aware that you won’t have access to the energy (import) account and the energy account holder won’t have access to the export account. As the accounts will be in separate names, they’ll be treated as completely independent. Why can't I upload a meter reading to my account?Sometimes it can take a little time to get all the information we need back from the industry - until we get that, you may not be able to submit a meter reading online. In the meantime, you can still call us on 0345 230 6333 or email it to export@ecotricity.co.uk.I don't have a communicating smart meter - can I have SET?No - we're not currently able to accept non-communicating smart meters. If we’re also your import energy supplier, there may be things we can do to connect to your meter - just get in touch on 0345 230 6333 or email metering@ecotricity.co.uk. Otherwise, you’ll need to contact your existing energy supplier. Can I sign up over the phone? This is an online only product, so we're not able to sign you up over the phone. You can sign up here.Is this tariff available for business or council managed accounts? No, this is a domestic only product. If the assets are owned by a business or the entity being provided the export rate is a business, this isn’t the product for you. We’re looking at introducing some new products for businesses too – so watch this space. You can also go to For your business | Ecotricity for more information; or alternatively call us on 0345 230 6102 or email businesssales@ecotricity.co.uk to discuss what products we already have available for our business customers.Secure Liberty 100 (SMETS1)Button Type: Keypad (press 9)Press button 9 on the meter keypad to flick through the displaysFlick through until the screen display ‘EXP KWH’The export reading will appear after a couple of seconds

There are two simple options to choose from: ❯ Pay by Direct Debit for what you use each month❯ Pay a set monthly budget – we'll work out your average use, and you'll pay the same each month by Direct Debit. We'll review this regularly and adjust it up or down if we need to – we’ll always give you at least 10 working days notice of any change.
[H4] Pay for what you use
[H5] How can I just pay for the energy I’ve used each month?
If you pay by Direct Debit for what you use, we’ll send you a bill each month showing the balance to pay. To ensure that your bill is accurate, we’ll email you to request a meter reading just before we’re about to produce your bill. The easiest way to submit meter readings for your home is through your account online – on your smart device or desktop. You can also send us a meter reading using our 24/7 automated phone line – just call 0345 555 7 100 and choose option 2.Your monthly payments will leave your account within three days of the date quoted on your bill. You can change your bill date so we collect your payments on the most convenient day for you once you’ve received your first bill.Meter readings are a great way to keep your account up to date, but if you’d prefer just to send a meter reading every three months, that’s absolutely fine. We’ll simply estimate your usage in between the readings you send us.
[H4] Pay a set monthly budget
[H5] How do you work out my fixed monthly payments?
For new customers, we either base your payment amount on information you’ve given us, or we’ll simply use the average energy consumption for the size of your home. We may need more information from you to make your monthly payment as accurate as possible. For existing customers, we predict how much you’ll pay for the coming year based on the information we hold about your usage – quite simply, we see how much you have used in the past to estimate how much you’ll use in the future.
[H5] How often will I receive a statement?
If you pay a set monthly Direct Debit, you’ll receive a statement every month, which will show you the current balance on your account. We’ll email you just before we’re due to produce your statement to request a meter reading (unless you’ve got a smart meter, which will send us your reading automatically). This will ensure that your statement is accurate. We also ask our meter readers to read your meter every three months. If we aren’t able to get a meter reading, your statement will be based on estimated readings.Do keep an eye on your statements – and contact us with a meter reading if you think you’re paying too much or too little, particularly if we’ve estimated your meter readings on two consecutive statements.
[H5] How will you stop me paying too much or too little?
We promise to work with you to make sure your payments are as accurate as possible and you aren’t paying too much or too little. The monthly payment is averaged over a year– which means it’s higher than your consumption in the summer and lower than your consumption in the winter. We review how much gas or electricity you use every few months. If you're paying too much or too little, we contact you to make any changes we need to. The more meter readings we have, the more accurate we can make your monthly payments, so please send us a meter reading when you can. The easiest way to submit meter readings is through your online account– on your smart device or desktop.
[H5] What if my account’s in debt?
Every few months we review your monthly Direct Debit to make sure that you’re paying the right amount. If we find that your monthly payments have been too low to cover your energy consumption, we’ll spread any amount owing over the period until your next review by adding it to your Direct Debit.
[H5] Do you automatically refund credit?
We’ll refund credit at any time if you ask us to, but we always need an up-to-date meter reading to ensure we’re refunding you the right amount. We always suggest that you stay at least one month’s payment ahead on your account, just to help prevent a build-up of debt throughout the year.If you pay a set monthly budget, it’s quite normal to have credit on your account in the summer months when you’re using less energy. This is balanced out in the winter when your consumption is higher. So although we’d be happy to discuss this with you, if we refund any credit on your account, you could then build up a debit, and so we may have to recalculate your payments accordingly. This could lead to your monthly payments being increased to cover the winter months.
[H5] How often do you collect set monthly budget payments?
We usually collect set monthly budget payments every month, but if you’d prefer to make more regular payments (weekly or fortnightly), we can arrange this for you. Just get in touch with us using the contact details below.
[H5] Which days do you collect payments?
You can choose the best date for you (excluding 29th, 30th or 31st of each month) for us to collect your monthly Direct Debit payments. The payments will leave your account on or within three working days of your chosen date.
[H5] What if my circumstances change?
Let us know if your circumstances change, and you think those changes will affect the amount of energy you use. For example, a change in heating system (e.g. ground/air source heat pump), change in occupancy, building work, or microgeneration could make a difference to how much energy you use. You can contact us using the details below.
[H4] I’m also a Microtricity (Feed-in Tariff) customer – how does this affect my payment method?
If you’re a Microtricity customer, you have two options to pay by Direct Debit. You can pay for the energy you use each month, and we can add your Microtricity payment to your

Your Diagnosis

Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.

Read the Narrative & headings: do hard facts (prices, dates, numbers) outweigh fluff power-words?
Semantic Coherence 0 / 20
Compare the homepage promise against the sub-page reality. Do they hold the same line?

💡 Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)

These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.

Information Density

Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.

Semantic Alignment

Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.

Trust & Proof

Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.

Commodity Fingerprint

Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.

Identity & Authority

Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.

Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

Ecotricity delivers a masterclass in utility-sector transparency, trading generic ‘net zero’ slogans for raw installation targets and specific kWh pricing. While it utilizes activist-style marketing language, it anchors every claim in granular technical requirements and operational reality.

Deploy comprehensive Organization and Person schema to bridge the authority gap and link Dale Vince to verified profiles. Update the Smart Meter target tables to include the Q1 2026 actuals to maintain the site’s high standards of transparency. Add a visible Ofgem license number to the footer of all pages to satisfy regulatory proof expectations. Convert the ‘live generation’ mention into a persistent real-time data widget to further reinforce the ‘anti-greenwash’ signal.

The content perfectly aligns with the Energy and Utilities sector, specifically focusing on renewable energy retail, micro-generation export, and smart infrastructure deployment. Every page provides functional utility data, from bank sort codes for billing to specific G98/G99 regulatory forms for solar exports.

“The low BS score of 22 is driven primarily by the high specificity of the technical content and the transparent reporting of installation targets. The score is prevented from being lower only by the use of common green-energy clichés (Pillar 4) and the technical absence of structured data/schema (Pillar 5) which is expected for a brand claiming market leadership.”
