Industry Context — Common BS Fingerprints in Energy, Utilities & Environmental Services
Generic Claims: powering a sustainable future, saving the planet, affordable green energy, leading the energy transition…
Red Flags: no regulatory license number displayed, green claims without fuel mix disclosure, net zero claims without reduction pathway, carbon offset only strategy presented as carbon neutral…
Semantic Drift Patterns: homepage claims 100% renewable but tariff page shows mixed sources, green branding everywhere but sustainability report shows minimal renewable share, claims affordable but pricing is above market average, net zero commitment on homepage but no carbon reduction timeline…
Proof Expectations: Ofgem or regulatory license number, published fuel mix disclosure, specific carbon reduction targets with timelines, third-party sustainability certifications…

[H3] Inspection FAQs

What happens during the inspection?

A technician visits your home or business. A NW Natural technician visits your home or business for up to one hour and inspects the natural gas furnace, water heater, fireplace, range or grill. A person aged 18 or older must be home at that time.

Inspects natural gas appliances. The technician will inspect — not repair — your natural gas appliances by performing these checks:
- Run the equipment to see if it operates properly
- Visually inspect the venting system
- Clean and adjust pilot lights as needed
- Check for possible damage
- Inspect safety devices and controls
- Review equipment operation in accordance with manufacturer settings
- Check for adequate combustion air supply

Provides an inspection summary. The technician will provide a written summary of any issues found with the gas appliance during the inspection.

Recommends repairs, if necessary. If an appliance needs work or repair beyond the scope of the inspection, the technician will also recommend next steps. Contact our Service Solutions team, who will refer you to a NW Natural Preferred Contractor best suited to make recommended repairs.

When should I schedule an inspection?

Please schedule your inspection in the spring or summer, before the heating season begins. You’ll have an easier time finding an available contractor who specializes in gas appliances if you need a repair.

Is it possible that my inspection will be rescheduled?

Yes. We may be required to reschedule an inspection in cases such as critical services, inclement weather or poor outdoor air quality.
If we need to reschedule your inspection, a customer service representative will call you at the number you provided. They will leave a message if the phone is not answered.

Should I ask to see the service tech's ID?

Yes. You can recognize NW Natural employees and contractors by their uniforms and photo ID. Feel free to ask to see their photo ID.

My equipment isn’t working properly, and I need help now.

Please contact a NW Natural Service Solutions contractor for equipment repairs or tune-ups.

I think I smell natural gas. What do I do?

Leave the area and call our 24-hour emergency line 800-882-3377. We'll come over and check things out.

What are additional ways I can lower energy bills?

We have options that can help lower energy bills, including bill discounts, flexible payment plans and energy-efficiency tips. See options here.

Your Diagnosis

Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.

Information Density 0 / 30
Read the Narrative & headings: do hard facts (prices, dates, numbers) outweigh fluff power-words?
Semantic Coherence 0 / 20
Compare the homepage promise against the sub-page reality. Do they hold the same line?
Trust & Proof 0 / 20
Weigh review mentions against actual external proof links. Claims without verification = theatre.
Commodity Fingerprint 0 / 15
Check headings & narrative against the industry clichés in the setup above.
Identity & Authority 0 / 15
Inspect the schema: is there real Organization/Person identity with sameAs links, or gaps?
Your predicted BS score 0 / 100
💡 Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)

These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.

Information Density

Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.

Semantic Alignment

Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.

Trust & Proof

Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.

Commodity Fingerprint

Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.

Identity & Authority

Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.

Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

Energy, Utilities & Environmental Services BS: NW Natural (nwnatural.com)

https://nwnatural.com 📍 Industry: Energy, Utilities & Environmental Services
25 BS / 100

NW Natural is a high-substance utility site that suffers more from technical neglect and aging data than from actual bullshit. It avoids modern ‘greenwashing’ jargon in favor of functional customer service manuals and precise eligibility tables. Its BS score is primarily penalized for missing industry-standard regulatory disclosures and technical schema.

Immediately update all income eligibility tables from 2024/2025 data to current 2026/2027 standards. Implement Organization and LocalBusiness schema with sameAs links to regulatory filings and official social profiles to bridge the authority gap. Add the utility’s official regulatory license number to the footer of all pages. Replace generic H4 headings like ‘Come on in’ with descriptive, noun-heavy alternatives like ‘Manage Your Natural Gas Account.’

The content perfectly aligns with the Energy and Utilities sector, specifically focusing on natural gas distribution, safety, and billing within the Oregon and Washington regions. All technical references to gas appliances, odor detection, and climate protection programs confirm its utility identity.

“The score of 25 is driven by the technical absence of schema (Step 5) and the use of stale 2024 data tables (Step 1). The site is a benchmark for functional utility communication, marred only by technical and temporal maintenance gaps.”
