Read the full case study [H3] Our Latest Newsletter [H1] What is a Chartered Financial Planner? Chartered Financial Planners are a type of Independent Financial Advisor (or IFA for short). IFAs are so called because they are not tied to financial products from a particular provider; instead they are 'independent' and can advise on and recommend financial products from the entire market. Here in the UK, IFAs are strictly regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). In practice this means that an IFA is a qualified professional who: (a) has passed examinations set by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), and (b) is obligated to keep their financial knowledge up to date and in line with the current best practice indefinitely, in a process called Continuing Professional Development or CPD. Less than 5% of FCA regulated IFA firms in the City of London have achieved the professional standard of Chartered Financial Planners. Here's why: First, individual plannners must have at least five years' relevant experience in the industry, as well as no less than three years' CPD. Then, they must complete the CII’s Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning. This qualification, one of most demanding in the industry, aims to ensure that the IFA's knowledge, ability, ethics and conduct are all without question and meet the CII's extremely rigorous standards. Last, Chartered Financial Planners must always hold valid membership of the Personal Finance Society, an achievement in its own right. Ed's areas of expertise and financial qualifications. [H1] What is a Certified Financial Planner? A CFP can be seen as a personal trainer for your finances. Just like a trainer in a gym asks you to sets goals, keeps a record and assesses how your fitness plan is progressing, a CFP will perform a similar role for your money. You can expect a qualified CFP to do the following: Work out what you are hoping to achieve from your finances e.g. buy a house, start a business or plan a dream retirement. Understand what resources you have currently to meet your objectives e.g. existing income and capital. Create a realistic plan to meet your objectives using some given assumptions e.g. tax, inflation, and growth. Test, adjust and reshape the plan as your circumstances change. The term Certified Financial Planner or CFP is applied to a financial adviser who has successfully completed and attained the award of CFPCM as dictated by the Institute of Financial Planning (IFP). The CFP qualification is the only internationally recognized professional financial planning qualification in existence. There are over 900 CFP advisers in the UK and 139,000 worldwide. Look for the following charter mark to make sure the firm you deal with include experienced advisers that have attained this valuable qualification. Nick's areas of expertise and financial qualifications. The FCA aims to make identifying a financial advisor that you can trust to provide unbiased, independent advice as easy as possible. The additional qualifications that Ed Holder and Nick Combes have achieved, and the firm's resulting Chartered status, mean that our financial advice and planning are not only independent and professional, but in the top flight. [H2] Our Services Financial services we offerRetirement Planning & Pension Advice [H1] Financial services we offerRetirement Planning & Pension Advice At some point in the future, most of us want to down tools, stop working, but still be able to continue a relatively good standard of living while crucially not having to cut spending too drastically. During our working lives, we have earned income from employment or self employment to save and pay for food, housing, children’s education and long holidays etc. When our earned income stops however, there is a clear need for continued income from somewhere. This will normally involve using the income and capital sums earned during our working lives to save a sufficient body of capital on which we can then draw upon to fund what should be the longest and best holiday of our lives! All going well, we should all have the new flat rate basic state pension of around £8,000 per annum, but this is far less than most people actually want or even need to survive, let alone provide for a comfortable retirement. For those people lucky enough to have a generous company pension scheme, a large part of their required retirement income could be generated that way. For most people however, the bulk of the money they will have to spend when they choose to stop working will come from their private savings. Whether using ISAs, Offshore Bonds, a property portfolio, Unit Trusts, VCT, EIS, ICIVs, cash accounts or indeed pension contracts such as SIPPS, the onus is now on the individual to accumulate a large savings pot with which to generate or convert to income. Modern personal pension plans are simply very useful and crucially tax incentivised structures that can be used to save up money far more quickly that non-incentivised structures due to the extra inputs from HMRC. Pensions remain one of the most efficient but at the same time most complex ways to save. You no longer have to save in old insurance company schemes with potential high charges and poor choice – we now have far more flexibility to use the ‘pension rules’ to your advantage. We can now use a ‘pension wrapper’ to hold a portfolio of investments which is then sheltered from tax allowing these funds to grow extremely efficiently. Regardless of the medium used to accumulate the savings, careful planning to ensure that you are saving enough on a monthly or annual basis is critical. Regular reviews to assess investment returns, inflation, charges, annuity rates and volatility are paramount to keep the target retirement income on track. [H2] Our Services Financial services we offerPension Consolidation Advice [H1] Financial services we offerPension Consolidation Advice We carry out specialist analysis and reporting on old work based and personal pension plans for clients, to assess the suitability of a potential consolidation. [H2] Pension Transfer or Consolidation – the Opportunity Many people have a number of old DC pensions from previous employers, as well as one or more personal pensions. Each of these plans or schemes will have different charging structures and each contain different investment funds and options. Some might be ‘high risk’ while other plans might be sitting in cash. Ensuring you have the correct investment strategy for your needs so that the returns generated are in line with expectations, the best charging structure for your goals and a pension plan that allows you to spend your money in the most efficient way is absolutely paramount. A pension switch or transfer to simplify and align your plans could save you thousands of pounds while reducing risk. The following case study highlights how an individual can increase their retirement benefits by consolidating old pension plans. [H2] Case Study This case study is based on a real life situation. We have changed the name of our client as well as the names of the two insurance companies involved, but the situation and the figures involved are accurate. [H4] THE CLIENT Michael is 39 and works for a media company in London. He is married and has two children. He was not a big fan of pensions and saw them as “a bit complicated”. [H4] THE PENSIONS Stakeholder Pension with ABC Equitable£45,000 Group Personal Pension with XYZ Insurance£98,000 [H4] OUR RECOMMENDATION 1. SIMPLIFY The advice for this client was to consolidate the two plans into one new Platform SIPP contract. Ongoing reporting on the performance of the underlying investments is now quicker and clearer for Michael. We have also provided him with online access to be able to keep track and take control of his money. Michael now sees that the £143,000 that he had accumulated was HIS money with which he can now take control of and invest in much the same way as he does with his ISAs. 2. CLEAR ONGOING COSTS The new plan has a transparent charging structure that actually reduced both the contract and fund manager charges 3. RISK ASSESSMENT We carried out a comprehensive risk assessment of the investments that Michael held in his pension. We provided investment advice and Michael was invested in a portfolio that we agreed matched his attitude to risk, capacity for loss and the critical yield required to meet his objectives. 4.REVIEW PROCESS We agreed an ongoing service level with Michael that included meeting up at least once a year to review his pension investments and crucially ensure that his contract is on track to meet his desired retirement income [H4] THE RESULT Even assuming the same growth rates as before, the new more efficient streamlined plan is projected to give Michael £66,500 more to spend in retirement [H2] Important Point to Note Not all pensions are the same. Defined Benefit or Final Salary Pension Schemes carry certain guarantees and benefits that are almost impossible to replicate in the personal pension environment. Such contracts should only be transferred in very rare situations as doing so would ordinarily result in a worse outcome for the individual. These valuable employer sponsored pension schemes guarantee a level of increasing retirement income for the member, whereas the income available from personal pensions (PPS) and occupational defined contribution (DC) schemes is a direct result of how the individual manages the investment returns and charges over the term. [H2] Our Services Financial services we offerInvestment Advice & Wealth Management [H1] Financial services we offerInvestment Advice & Wealth Management [H2] Independent Investment Advisers in London When considering whether to appoint an advisor or wealth manager the first thing to decide is whether or not the advisor should have discretionary powers or maintain a consulting advisory relationship and include the investor in changes to investment strategy or assets. A good adviser comes with years of experience and specialist knowledge, while taking liability for the advice. However advice comes at an additional cost, so regular assessment of the value added should be undertaken to see if a change or removal of this ‘outsourced specialist’ is warranted. [H2] Boutique Wealth Management with bespoke portfolios At Holder & Combes, we construct investment portfolios to meet our clients’ objectives and agreed appetite for risk. We use all asset classes, from equity and bonds to managed futures, and can even access hedge funds where suitable. Managing the expected returns of the mix of investments is key to our investment planning approach. The firm has a four stage process for managing our clients’ private wealth: [H3] 1. Fact Finding & Goal Planning Analyse Assets and Liabilities Establish Target Income / Capital and date(s) required Sum Establish any Specific Requirements – Ethical / Social Scenario Planning – Risk/Investment Inputs [H3] 2. Review Process We facilitate three different levels of ongoing service We monitor the investment recommendations Complete review of all our recommended funds on a regular basis We actively make ad hoc changes as and when required Rebalance assets to fit allocation model to maintain expected return Regular face to face reviews [H2] Why Invest? Cash deposits are useful for holding emergency monies for exploding boilers or short periods of unemployment, but inflation erodes the value of cash over the medium and long term meaning cash is not actually as safe as many people believe. Moreover cash savings accounts currently provide poor value for money. With inflation hovering between 1 to 2%, many people nowadays are reassessing their actual need for instant access cash, and allocating more capital to purchase ‘real assets’ that have a fighting chance of keeping up! This means decisions need to be made about how and where to invest, but investing in the current environment presents a number of challenges. The choice of retail investment options is mind blowing with new ways and routes to invest seemingly springing up every day. Online stock brokerage services provide an easy way to purchase everything from shares in FTSE100 companies to derivatives and CFDs to buying an index through ETFs. The thrill of watching the daily price swings is attractive to some and a small portfolio of handpicked shares can, in the right circumstances, produce stellar returns. Other investors prefer the relative safety of open ended collective investment funds such as Unit Trusts and Open Ended Investment Companies (OEICs) that also provide access to real assets but have professional fund management making the daily buy/sell decisions. From low cost passive funds to high octane UCITSIII absolute return funds, there are literally thousands of retail collectives to choose from, most with daily liquidity. [H2] Why Use Holder and Combes to Manage your Investments? We’re committed to help our clients manage their financial affairs in an optimum manner, balancing income and savings in a tax-efficient way that maximises returns without impacting their day to day life in the meantime. The partners, Ed Holder and Nick Combes, are both members of the Personal Finance Society and have worked together since 2002. [H2] Our Services Financial services we offerIndependent Mortgage Advice [H1] Financial services we offerIndependent Mortgage Advice [H2] Mortgage Advice For many buying a house can be an exciting but also daunting prospect. Having an experienced mortgage broker to help you through the process can save you stress, time and money. Here are some of the key reasons to instruct a mortgage broker or financial adviser who specialises in mortgages: Impartiality. A mortgage broker that you instruct represents you. He or she has no allegiance to the estate agent or vendor you are buying through or from. Experience. An experienced mortgage broker will have dealt with many cases before and should know the type of properties to avoid, give tips on negotiation and provide some background to the legal pitfalls that can delay or stop a purchase in its tracks. Product knowledge. Whilst borrowing money is all about finding the cheapest rates there are subtle differences between mortgage products that you may or may not understand. Having an expert guide you through how best to use product features can lead to savings in the long term. A smooth journey. The person arranging your mortgage has the most detailed knowledge of any professional involved in the transaction. Your mortgage broker knows every element of the property purchase or remortgage because he or she interacts with every other key person in the deal. This in-depth knowledge is vital in advising you as to: The progress of the transaction Problems that may occur Whether the proposed purchase is worth pursuing Not all mortgage brokers are the same, finding one that genuinely has your best interests at heart can be a useful addition to the team you engage for your purchase. Contact us today if you would like to speak with us to organise an initial consultation with one of our expert mortgage brokers. [H2] Mortgage Advice from Holder & Combes In contrast to the limited service proposition of most high street banks, our property team also provides a fully comprehensive advice service that does not stop once a suitable mortgage product has been sourced and applied for. By keeping in close contact with our clients throughout what can be a very involved and stressful three months of their lives, we are able to help project manage the otherwise demanding house buying process. From early advice on what sort of property to purchase and areas of London to consider, to helping find a good solicitor, through to advice on which survey to instruct and ensuring all documents and paperwork are forwarded and submitted at the right times, we are on hand to help and advise wherever we can. How much can you afford to borrow? How much deposit do you need? Which lenders will lend to you? How much money will you need to cover moving costs and fees? What will your total monthly outgoings be if you own your home instead of renting? How much can you afford to borrow? What size mortgage can you get? Who do you talk to and how do you start? What types of insurance will you need? What type of mortgage is right for you? Choosing the right mortgage product has become even more complicated in the last year with lenders increasing interest rates and tightening criteria in a bid to minimize their risk. With years of experience and access to all UK lenders, we are well placed to help you find the very best mortgage, even in this difficult climate. From first time buyers to buy to let investors, we have the expertise to make sure you get the most cost effective solution possible. Contact us today if you would like to speak with us to organise an initial consultation with one of our expert mortgage brokers. [H2] Types of Mortgage Fixed rate mortgages are for those of us who want to be certain of their monthly outgoings and a good option if you are of the opinion that interest rates will rise. They are protected from interest rate fluctuations for the length of fixed rate period. Whilst most of our clients opt for a two, three or five year fix. Tracker mortgages track the Bank of England base rate and are dependent on its fluctuations. If it drops you pay less, increases you pay more. Lifetime tracker mortgages are now available for the entire duration of the loan period. Offset mortgages allow you to offset any money in your current account against your mortgage, so you only pay interest on the difference. As the savings for offset mortgages aren’t currently taxed, it can be an efficient way for high rate tax payers to use their money. [H2] Mortgage Market Review The crash of 2008, gave birth to the Mortgage Market Review (MMR), one of the largest shake-ups in the mortgage sector. One of the main changes introduced following MMR is Affordability Assessment, lenders are now required to analyse clients monthly spending to ensure the monthly mortgage payment is achievable during the scheme period and at the lender standard variable rate. [H2] Independent Mortgage Advice With years of experience and access to all UK lenders, we are well placed to help you find the very best mortgage, even in this difficult climate. Losing a loved one is traumatic enough, without the added pressure of having to spend time and money trying to put the deceased’s affairs in order. This process is all the more painful if it is not known how the deceased would have wanted assets distributed. No matter whether you leave a large or small estate, your plans on how to distribute it do not need to be overly complicated. The concept of ‘estate planning’ may sound grandiose, but it can actually be a straightforward exercise of arranging your assets in such a way that more goes to the people you want; family, friends, and charities, as opposed to those you don’t, i.e. the tax man! Your Diagnosis
Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.
Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)
These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.
Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.
Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.
Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.
Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.
Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.
Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.
Based on 1230 businesses audited.
Financial Services, Banking & Insurance BS: Holder & Combes (holderandcombes.co.uk)
Holder & Combes is a low-BS operator that prioritizes educational substance and professional credentials over marketing hyperbole. While it utilizes some standard industry templates and jargon, it grounds every major claim in regulatory definitions or mathematical case studies.
1. Integrate a direct link to the FCA Register for the firm and individual advisers to satisfy the ‘Proof Path’ requirement. 2. Publish a high-level fee schedule or ‘Charging Structure’ to eliminate the primary missing element identified in the industry dictionary. 3. Enhance the structured data by adding Person schema for the partners with sameAs links to their LinkedIn or professional accreditation profiles. 4. Replace subjective superlatives like ‘best advice’ and ‘best service’ with more objective descriptors of the firm’s specific methodology.
The content strictly aligns with the Financial Services category, specifically focusing on the UK regulatory environment for Independent Financial Advisers (IFAs). It correctly utilizes technical terminology such as Pension Consolidation, SIPP contracts, and the distinction between Chartered and Certified statuses.
“The score of 35 is driven primarily by a low Semantic Coherence penalty and high Information Density. The Trust and Proof pillar (10) and Commodity Fingerprint (8) account for the bulk of the score due to the absence of external verification links and the use of industry-standard template structures. The technical and logical alignment between the homepage and sub-pages is exceptionally strong.”
This training module utilizes a snapshot of public data from Holder & Combes, captured on May 21, 2026, to demonstrate how machine logic evaluates different types of business narratives.
Purpose: This data is presented under “Fair Use” / “Educational Exception” for the purpose of forensic semantic analysis, allowing users to compare human intuition against machine-generated evaluations.
Notice to Holder & Combes: This analysis is part of a non-adversarial audit conducted by 1 Euro SEO. The results provided by 1EuroSEO are intended as professional feedback to help improve any website’s machine-readability and authority signals. The 1EuroSEO BS Detection Tool is a free tool, and anyone can test any company to see how their content is interpreted by AI models.
Any company can use the insights for free and improve its voice by comparing it to industry clichés or competitors. When a company has updated its content, it can always submit a new audit request, which will be reflected in a new current score.
To all users: You are encouraged to visit the live site at https://holderandcombes.co.uk to view the most current version of its content and learn from the source what this company is about and what it offers.
