We’re a Human-Powered Brewery

New Belgium has been a human-powered company from the beginning. Before our founders ever sold a bottle of beer, they hiked into Rocky Mountain National Park with a jug of home brew to outline the values that would shape our brewery. As a certified B Corp, New Belgium continues its commitment to being a brewery for good. We put people and community first, consider the environmental and social impact of our work, and strive to set the highest standards of taste and quality when it comes to our craft—making great beer.

[H4] June
1988

After a bike trip through Belgium, co-founders Kim Jordan and Jeff Lebesch are inspired to bring Belgian brewing traditions to their hometown.

[H4] March
1991

Kim and Jeff install brewing equipment in the basement of their Fort Collins home. They also trek into the Rocky Mountains and establish New Belgium's core values, which were inspired by Kim’s career as a social worker.

[H4] The
Early Days

With brewing underway, Kim is New Belgium's jack-of-all-trades as the first bottler, sales rep, distributor, marketer, financial planner and longtime CEO. Kim would eventually scale the brewery into one of the most successful craft breweries in the country, acting as a visionary for both her co-workers and the industry.

[H4] June
1991

Kim and Jeff begin test brews of two beers: an amber ale—lovingly named Fat Tire—and a Belgian-style dubbel called “Abbey.” Later that month, both beers are sold for the first time at the Colorado Brewers' Festival.

[H4] October
1993

Abbey Ale wins a gold medal in the Specialty Category at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. At the time, Belgian-style beers were so rare in the craft beer scene that they didn’t even have their own category.

[H4] October
1995

Having outgrown the three-year-old production facility, New Belgium relocates a few blocks down the street to our current brewery and taproom location.

[H4] January
1999

New Belgium starts off the new year with a new tradition: New Belgium-branded anniversary bikes, beginning with a 1999 Electra cruiser. The tradition of awarding co-workers with a cruiser on their one-year anniversary continues today.

[H4] Early
2000

New Belgium's first batch of La Folie Sour Brown Ale, is hand-bottled and sold. This inaugural batch was aged in a collection of French-oak wine barrels. A few months later, the brewery would receive its first batch of two-story French-oak foeders, transforming its sour beer program.

[H4] Summer
2003

New Belgium creates an in-house sustainability department, which would go on to establish the brewery as a Certified B-Corp and 1% for the Planet member, while spearheading on-site projects like the installation of solar panels and a wastewater treatment facility. The department was inspired by one of New Belgium's core values: we inspire social and environmental change.

[H4] August
2009

New Belgium implements what at the time is the largest private solar array in the state of Colorado, capable of generating 3% of total electricity needs and 16% of peak load. These efforts continue today.

[H4] December
2012

New Belgium becomes 100% employee owned. The ESOP buys the remaining shares from CEO Kim Jordan and her family, and goes from 41.5% ownership to 100% ownership, with a total of 457 co-workers.

[H4] May
2016

Just in time for summer, the Asheville brewery opens to the public, bringing the New Belgium experience to the East Coast.

New Belgium employees vote in favor of Lion Little World Beverages acquiring New Belgium Brewing with a commitment to continuing our “force for good” mission.
"We’re excited to welcome New Belgium Brewing into our global family of craft beverage brands. Since meeting the New Belgium team, we’ve been incredibly impressed not just with their commitment to world-class beer and the way they bring their brands to life, but their purpose-led business model and connection to the community – all values we share at Lion,”
- Matt Tapper, Managing Director of Lion Little World Beverages.

[H4] January

Bell’s Brewery joins New Belgium through an acquisition by Lion Little World Beverages – aligning two great American craft brewers. The combination of Bell’s and New Belgium places the expanded company at the top of the U.S. craft beer market in sales volume and growth, adding an extraordinary lineup of brands, including Two Hearted Ale and Oberon Ale.

[H4] March
2022

Five years after Voodoo Ranger IPA burst onto the craft beer scene, New Belgium releases Voodoo Ranger Juice Force IPA -- a fruit forward, highly drinkable 9.5% ABV hazy imperial IPA. Juice Force takes off with a bang and becomes the greatest U.S. craft beer launch of all time and kicks off a new fan-favorite lineup, including Fruit Force and Tropic Force.

[H4] January
2023

More than 30 years after Fat Tire introduced a generation to craft beer, New Belgium reimagines a classic and debuts a crisper, brighter, and even better Fat Tire to inspire the next generation of beer drinkers. Along with a fresh, new flavor, Fat Tire debuts a bold look that highlights New Belgium’s ongoing commitment to doing right by our planet.

[H4] May
2023

New Belgium further expands its production capabilities and acquires a 259,000-square-foot production brewery from Constellation Brands in Daleville, Va. All of the approximately 60 workers are offered a seamless transition to New Belgium employment at equal or greater pay than before. The move helps New Belgium keep up with increased demand for its growing and industry-leading portfolio.

Your Diagnosis

Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.

Information Density 0 / 30
Read the Narrative & headings: do hard facts (prices, dates, numbers) outweigh fluff power-words?
Semantic Coherence 0 / 20
Compare the homepage promise against the sub-page reality. Do they hold the same line?
Trust & Proof 0 / 20
Weigh review mentions against actual external proof links. Claims without verification = theatre.
Commodity Fingerprint 0 / 15
Check headings & narrative against the industry clichés in the setup above.
Identity & Authority 0 / 15
Inspect the schema: is there real Organization/Person identity with sameAs links, or gaps?
Your predicted BS score 0 / 100
💡 Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)

These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.

Information Density

Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.

Semantic Alignment

Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.

Trust & Proof

Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.

Commodity Fingerprint

Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.

Identity & Authority

Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.

Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

New Belgium Brewing is a rare example of high-substance corporate marketing that largely survives a forensic audit. While it leans on the human-powered buzzword to mask its massive industrial scale, the depth of historical data and employee-centric metrics provides a solid floor of credibility. This is a benchmark for low-BS brand storytelling.

Replace the curated 3-review block on the homepage with a verified third-party review aggregator like Untappd to remove trust theatre flags. Update the history timeline to include 2024 and 2025 milestones to bridge the 3-year gap from the last entry (May 2023).

“The score of 16 was primarily driven by Information Density (7) due to slogan repetition and Trust and Proof (4) due to low review counts and unlinked superlatives. Semantic Coherence (3) contributed due to the minor drift between the independent brand narrative and the corporate acquisition reality. The site scored 0 in Identity and Authority because its technical and organizational footprint is flawlessly documented.”
