Colour

Lustrous cherry red with a dark magenta core.

Nose

Youthful. Initially reticent. An aromatic uplift of pan scrapings laced with thyme/pink peppercorn/marjoram. The reds have it: primarily red fruits — cranberry, red cherry and pomegranate; aided and abetted by red liquorice, musk/Turkish delight. Scents of graphite, black olive (and cassis?) immediately remind of both variety and place. Well-handled oak is barely perceptible (83% new ?!) — the faintest suggestion of sandalwood/teakwood. With air and time more unfolds…

Palate

Medium-bodied, tight. Very young — primal and fresh. What’s most noted aromatically on the nose reappears on palate — redcurrant, mulberry leaf, fig, fleshy blood plum. Not unexpectedly, more telltale Cabernet-correct graphite/lead pencil notes evident on palate.

[H2] vintage conditions

Winter rainfall aligned closely with long-term averages, largely due to a notably wet July, setting the stage for a promising start to the growing season. The vines benefitted from this ample hydration, entering the growing season with robust vigor. A mild growing season ensued, marked by an absence of extreme heat, laying down perfect ripening conditions for the region’s signature variety, Cabernet Sauvignon.

[H3] The Bin 169 Story

In 2008, we decided to add a contemporary regional stablemate to the collection, a partner to the revered multi-regional Bin 707. Sourced from some of the same revered blocks as Max Schubert’s original 1973 Bin 169 Coonawarra Claret. A contemporary alternative to Bin 707 with a strong regional imprint. A sibling to RWT and a twin to Bin 150. This gorgeously scented and richly concentrated wine is steeped in the origins of our modern winemaking traditions. It was not made in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017.

Colour

Plum red, crimson rim.

Nose

Featuring an intricate blend of dark fruit aromas, with the richness of blackberries and the juicy depth of plums holding attention. Hints of Portuguese custard and cinnamon sugar bring sweetness, while the exotic spiciness of pecan-infused hummingbird cake contrasts with the savoury notes of rosemary lamb. Undertones of aromatic dried herbs and a subtle hint of boot polish add depth to the profile. The influence of fine, toasty oak is present but discreetly folds into the fruit. An umami soy sauce character and the rich, cured flavour of bresaola round out the aromatic profile.

Palate

A thoughtful blend of varietals. The inclusion of Cabernet Sauvignon provides impeccable structure and depth. Supporting this foundation, Shiraz adds weight and warmth. Red fruits flood the palate, with vibrant flavours of red currant and tart cranberry. The sweetness of vanilla runs throughout the wine, while mouth-coating tannins create a rich, full-bodied texture. Savoury flavours of black olive emerge, accompanied by a blend of orange zest, fennel, and olive. Impeccable, fine tannins conclude the experience, leaving a lasting impression of both power and elegance.

[H2] Vintage Conditions

McLaren Vale witnessed a wetter-than-average growing season due to persistent low-pressure systems in October and November. The cold, windy conditions affected flowering and fruit set, while isolated hail reduced yields. A delayed but cool harvest yielded high-quality grapes with concentrated flavours and ripe tannins. Cooler spring temperatures with more cloud coverage slowed vine development, but no significant frosts occurred. January temperatures were close to long-term average while the rest of the growing season was cool. The harvest proceeded without major heat spikes, producing exceptional Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Barossa Valley navigated climatic variations with near-average winter rainfall but drier conditions leading to budburst. Drier conditions later in the season and moderate harvest temperatures allowed for the development of high-quality grapes. Shiraz performed well, ripening with exceptional varietal characteristics.

Bin 389 is one of Australia’s great cellaring red wines. First produced in 1960, its history is connected with the development of Grange and Max Schubert’s ambition of creating a ‘dynasty of wines which all bear an unmistakable resemblance to each other’. Named after its original binning compartment at Magill cellars, Bin 389 is the most popular wine in the Australian secondary wine market because of its heritage, consistency and reputation.

Colour

Dark plum, purple rim.

Nose

First, the savoury allure of pimento olives and the herbal freshness of bay leaf, blending with the scent of cedar wood. The earthy fragrance of forest floor and bramble fruits are present, while warm toasted spices and Szechuan pepper add complexity. Subtle notes of capsicum and radicchio are balanced by the ripe sweetness of plum and a mix of red fruits. A botanical hint of juniper and the scent of roasted thyme and chicken. A final note of freshly ground paprika rounds out a generous aromatic profile.

Palate

A burst of red fruit delivers a vibrant and lively mouthfeel. Steely tannins provide a structured backbone, complementing the darker tones of ripe forest fruit and a savoury hint of olives. A minerality, reminiscent of blue slate and ironstone, enhances the wine’s complexity. Subtle notes of tobacco lend a rich, earthy quality, contributing to a tightly coiled palate. A young Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon certainly requires a decant to open up.

[H2] Vintage Conditions

McLaren Vale had significantly higher rainfall than the long-term average, with cooler spring temperatures affecting flowering and fruit set, and isolated hail further reducing yields. Mild conditions led into harvest, producing grapes with concentrated flavours and ripe tannins. Padthaway also experienced above-average rainfall in the early growing season with cooler spring temperatures impacting vine development and resulting in a later flowering period. The harvest was without significant heat spikes, yielding exceptional parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon. The Barossa Valley experienced near-average winter rainfall and a drier lead up to budburst. Cooler-than-average temperatures prevailed for most of the growing season, but the harvest period was moderately warm, allowing for the development of high-quality grapes. Wrattonbully encountered above-average rainfall and below-average temperatures, resulting in a cooler, wetter season that delayed ripening.
